Episode 49

HUDSON

Once I stepped into my bedroom door, I felt a sense of relief but also sadness as I have a funny feeling that Brooke may not want anything to do with me.

I know I have screwed up but I want a chance to make it right with her, I’m not the boy I was back then.

“That’s true,” says Asher suddenly, he was quiet in the office as he was trying to suss out what was happening.

“You think I’ve changed,” I asked him as I make my way to the bathroom to get ready for bed.

“You have human, you made sure you did even though it wasn’t for our mate, you made the changes but now we have to figure out how we going to stop all the people that are after mate and also make sure she knows we want her and no one else,” he says as he sits on his hind legs staring at me but he suddenly smirks “But I have to say mate looked really good, the time away helped her gain whatever it was she needed and also she was showing off all her scars.”

I stopped by the shower as I switched it on and the water flowed over the tiles, Asher was right Brooke had the sense of being more herself but also she looked amazing, something had changed within her but I think it was to do with the fact that her mother was still alive.

“I like it when you think I’m right,” says Asher with a smirk on his face.

I g***n out, he has to listen in on my thoughts.

I can hear his laughter as I block him out.

I walk into the shower to let the water flow over me but images of Brooke come flooding back in. I want to be with her so much but I know I have a long way to go.

I don’t stay in the shower too long; I grab a towel and wrap the towel around my waist. I open the door and walk around to replace a pair of sweatpants. Once I was dressed, there was a knock at the door.

I sigh and walk over to the door and open it, on the side of it was Danica.

She looks at me with a hard-line “We need to talk” she says as she barges in and makes herself comfortable on a chair by my desk.

I close my door and turn to look at her “What do we need to talk about?” I ask as I sit on my bed and face her.

Danica looks at me and sighs “Brooke wrote down what you told her, about Alfred” she says.

I look at her confused “What about him?” I ask her “He was….” But she shakes her head and looks at me “I knew Alfred as he was part of the group of men that came to the pack I was living at when I met Jackson” she says “He wasn’t happy about me then either but when Jackson brought me back to the pack he made me do one of those trails that he made you watch for humans but I out smarted him which he didn’t take kindly too.”

I didn’t exactly see Danica do the trial but I bet she did outsmart Alfred, he never liked anyone showing him up.

“Alfred kept following me around and even made a pass at me a few times,” she says looking at me and she leans back in the chair “I never told Jackson as he would have thought I was just being silly but I knew he was trying to figure me out which he never did but Brooke showed me her memory of that night of the attack,” she says and sighs “Alfred was there at the clearing when Brooke and I were attacked, I smelt his scent.”

I can’t help the growl that escapes my lips “He was told never to come back onto the pack lands unless he wanted to be killed” I said.

Danica looked at me with a scowl on her face “I know I smelt his scent but Hudson, when Willow was healing Brooke Alfred was watching her do it. Willow was young back then she didn’t know how to control herself.”

I can’t help but look back at her “What are you both?” I ask “Why would he want both Brooke and you so bad?”

Danica looks at me “I won’t tell you Hudson, everyone in this pack will be in danger if they ever found out about us” she says “And besides you need to win over my daughter” she says with a smirk “What do you have planned?”

“I’m going to have breakfast with her in the morning and take her around the pack grounds,” I said and she nods but stays quiet for a few moments “One thing I will tell you about our shifters Hudson, we only get one mate.”

Danica looks sad as she mentions it and looks at her hands, Jackson really hurt her but her being away from here never helped her or Brooke.

“Why didn’t you tell Jackson what you were at the time?” I asked it only made me realize that he never knew about what she was.

Danica looked at me and sighed “I was going to but we had loads of rogue attacks, everything became so real when I had Brooke but the night we argued I was going to tell him if Brooke decided to stay here, I would have told you all but when she told me she was a weak pathetic human and wanted to leave, I had to think it was safe for us to leave” she said.

I can’t help but feel guilty about the weak and pathetic part as I found out she overheard Rex and I talking that evening.

“Hudson, I can tell you have changed but falling for another human that was not your mate was wrong not only that she is here at the pack, do you think that is going to be weird for Brooke?” she says.

I look back at her and shake my head “Amy has a mate; I made him my Gamma when Brooke was away. Amy and I have no feelings towards each other and Amy would like to meet Brooke to talk to her” I said but she looks at me for a moment “I don’t know, you still have to be careful Brooke was broken because people were horrible to her but she has a hard time trusting people now too not only due to her father but you too.”

I look back at her hurt, I never thought I would have made her not trust me but I guess overhearing my rant with my father made her feel like that and in all honestly, I don’t blame her.

I look at her and sigh “What are you going to do about Jackson?” I asked her but her face goes stern really quickly “I don’t know but I think Brooke needs him to admit what he did whether he remembers it or not but judging by the look on his face when she showed him her memory of the attack he was clearly ashamed about it” she says and stands up, she starts to walk over to the door but stops and turns to look at me “Brooke will come around as the mate bond will start kicking in, she not long turned 18 Hudson. Jackson obviously didn’t know her birthday during that time either.”

She smiles and turns to open the door and walks out closing the door behind her.

Danica is right I need to work it out with Brooke but also I’m more worried about Alfred’s involvement in all this. He must have worked out what Brooke and Danica are.

I sigh and I pull the block I had on Asher down but he is snoring in my head.

I move up from the bed to go to sleep, I can’t close my eyes straight away as thoughts kept running around and I need to sort it all out soon.

After an hour of tossing and turning I finally fall to sleep with an image of Brooke in my mind

I woke up the next morning feeling like I’ve never slept; I still tossed and turned all night. I had a nightmare that Brooke was taken away from me and killed. My heart was beating wildly at the memory of the dream.

I look around the room and quickly get dressed, I wanted to see Brooke. I needed to put my mind at ease knowing that she was still here.

I change quickly and do my business in the bathroom. I open the door and head to the great hall where we all have our food. I look around and realize that Brooke is not down here. I never told her a time that I would meet her here but I will wait for a while till I see her even if she has had breakfast, we could just go straight on our walk around the pack lands.

I look around once again and grabbed a plate full of meat, taking my seat at my usual table I began to eat but I was soon joined by Amy.

“You look like a man on a mission,” she says with a smile.

I nod “Brooke will be down soon, we are going to walk around the pack lands. We need to spend some time together” I said.

“That’s a good idea,” Amy says as she touches my hand “I’m so glad that you are trying and accepting Brooke. That girl looks gorgeous,” she says.

I can’t help but smile.

“MATE” shouts Asher in my head.

I look up to see a blank-faced Brooke, staring at Amy and me.

She turns and runs away.

“Oh no, I shouldn’t…..” Amy says as she removes her hand. It takes me a few moments to realize that Brooke must have thought we were reconnecting or something.

f**k.

I jump to my feet but I am slowly forced down by two hands, I growl “Let me go, I need to go to Brooke and explain” I snarl but I soon realize that it was Shane and Rex.

Shane shakes his head “I will go after her, I will bring her back. I think she needs to know from someone who also knows what it is like not to be the only one to have their mate fall for someone else” he says without looking at Amy.

I can feel Amy tense by the side of me.

Shane doesn’t say anything; he just turns and heads the way Brooke ran.
