MALIK VLADIMIR

“Trinity!” Malik roared loudly as he rushed to his mate. However, not that it was much of a surprise, three of the wolves restrained him before he could get anywhere near her. “What have you done to her?” he growled menacingly as he turned his attention to his dad, struggling to believe the man was standing normally in front of him. As if he hadn’t just spent the last two days locked in the dungeon, restrained by a copious amount of silver.

“Don’t worry, lover boy, we haven’t done anything to your mate,” his dad had the audacity to snicker. As if there was anything remotely funny about this situation! “Well, not much, anyway.”

Malik growled again and tried to leap at his dad, seeing nothing but red, but the three wolves held him back. Any other time and three regular wolves wouldn’t have been nowhere near enough to restrain him but just like Peter, there was something about these wolves that seemed different to usual. Whatever it was, Malik couldn’t quite put his finger on but they were suddenly more powerful than they had been before.

“Let me go!” he growled and snapped at them, sneering when the wolf to his left jumped back in fear. Taking advantage of this, he shucked off the one on his right before kicking his leg back and pushing away the one that was stood behind him. Before anyone could lay another finger on him, he rushed over to his mate. Immediately, Malik dropped himself on the ground without a care for himself and gathered her into his arms, more afraid in this situation than he had felt in his entire life put together.

“Let him,” Orpheus ordered his wolves, holding his hand up in the air to halt them all. “It’s not like he’ll be able to do anything. Not with his mate unconscious.”

“What did you to do her?” he spat at his dad’s feet, the burning fire evident in his eyes.

“Oh, don’t worry,” Orpheus made a show of rolling his eyes, grinning with his band of merry men laughed behind him. Clearly, none of them possessed a decent sense of humour! “We didn’t do anything to her. Just knocked her out so she would stop struggling.”

“You what?”

“I have to say, son, you’ve got a feisty one of your hands,” Orpheus and his men broke into a fit of laughter once again. “We had her kicking and screaming at first but with all the noise she was making, she would have alerted you far sooner than we would have liked. We just knocked her over the head so she’d be out for a while,” his dad shrugged, as if knocking someone over the head wasn’t a big deal.

“What’s wrong with you? How could you do this?” Malik spat at his dad.

“It was rather simple but I don’t expect you to understand. You were always weak like your mum,” Orpheus snorted. “What did you think? That I didn’t know what you were doing the whole time?” he paused to chuckle, rubbing salt in Malik’s wounds. “I was suspicious of you the whole time. The fact that you thought I actually believed that you wanted to be a part of all of this is rather insulting. You’d never want to do any of this. You’re weak, just like your mother.”

“Take that back!” Malik roared, now seeing a darker red than before. “Don’t speak about my mum like that! Now after what you did to her!”

“I’ll always be sorry for what happened to Thea,” Orpheus’ face dropped, as if he was genuine in this moment but Malik refused to believe it. “I wish things went differently that day and I certainly wish she was here, by my side today but the fact of the matter is that Thea was weak. She couldn’t handle this life and instead of facing it, she took the easy route out by committing suicide.”

“How dare you say that?” Malik seethed. “She didn’t take the easy way out! She did the only thing that would free her from you!” As if his wounds had actually done some damage, Malik watched as Orpheus’ face distorted into one of pain, momentarily rendered speechless. “My mum never loved you!” he spat. “It’s disgusting that she thought the only way to free herself of you was to commit suicide. Imagine that. Someone being so desperate to get you out of their life that they have to kill themselves.”

“Shut up, Malik!” Orpheus roared, his eyes blazing gold as his wolf rose up to the surface. “How dare you say that? How dare you speak to me like that? I’m your father. Show some respect!”

“Unfortunately, father, respect is earned, not simply handed out. And you certainly haven’t done anything to earn my respect.”

Orpheus’ wanna-be followers broke out in outrage at his words but it was Orpheus that came rushing toward him.

“I’ll show you respect,” he all but foamed at the mouth as he reached out for Malik but his hand hung in mid-air as he sniffed, his body momentarily frozen.

Malik’s eyebrows furrowed together in confusion but as he sniffed, he froze too.

Marcellus? his wolf asked. What’s he doing here?

I have no idea but I’m so grateful! We need all the help that we can get.

There’s a bunch of other scents mixed in with his.

Must be the council.

“The council!” Orpheus growled loudly, fisting his hands as he took a step away from him. “What the fuck are they doing here?”

“I think that’s a question we should ask Malik,” Griffin stepped in, a smug expression on his face – definitely not the expression of a man whose best friend had just been killed. But then again, all of these wolves were deranged. His father being the most deranged of them all.

“I know you asked the council to visit,” Orpheus spat at his son before his lips lifted at the corners. “But not to worry. By the time to get here, it’ll be too late anyway.”

“What are you talking about?”

Instead of answering him, Orpheus merely spared a look, his eyes lingering on Trinity who was still unconscious in his arms.

“You’re not going to sacrifice Trinity!” Malik warned them, glaring daggers at everyone he could pay eyes on. He pulled her closer to his chest, turning her body away from their evil eyes. “Over my dead body you’ll lay a single finger on her.”

“That can be arranged,” Orpheus snorted and chortled. “But don’t worry son, I’m saving your mate for a welcome sacrifice to Lord Erebus once he returns. She’s no use to us now so you’ve still got some time with her. And like I said before, if you’re serious about the whole over your dead body thing, it can certainly be arranged.”

And just like that, Orpheus went back to continue with the sacrifice rituals, as if he hadn’t just threatened the life of his only child.
