The Apple of My Eye -
Chapter 1726 Don't Push Me Too Far
Speechlessly, Sheryl smiled. She could only nod at Isla's bubbly mood.
Isla, on the other hand, cheered and jumped because of too much joy.
Sheryl was very amused. Though already a mom, Isla still always acted like a child. Sheryl could only shake her head at her.
"You're so excited, Isla. What made you so happy?" Sheryl asked Isla in confusion.
Snapping her fingers, Isla looked at Sheryl saying, "You notice that?"
"Of course, Isla. Who wouldn't? When you're grinning like that! If I noticed nothing, I would be an idiot," Sheryl answered, shaking her head.
Before telling Sheryl what had happened the previous night, Isla grabbed Sheryl's hand and got into the car with her.
It wasn't really a big deal. But for Isla, it was already pretty exciting. And she wanted to share every happy moment in her life with Sheryl.
After hearing Isla's story, Sheryl burst into laughter. She couldn't believe Isla would be so happy about this.
Isla's mother-in-law had picked up the children to stay with her for a while, and she would take care of the kids to give their parents a break. Isla could finally have some alone time with Aron. This idea cheered Isla so much. She and Aron hadn't had a sweet vacation since they had children.
"Aron's parents are very nice. I am so glad that you have such nice in-laws. If Charles'..."
Sheryl stopped abruptly when she mentioned Charles' name.
Though Isla didn't expect Charles' name to be dragged in their conversation, she was still thankful that it was Sheryl who did it. If Isla had done that, she was sure Sheryl would have been upset. And, she did not want that to happen.
"Wish me luck, Sher. By the way, since I am going away on holiday with Aron, you will be very busy in the following weeks. I will not be around to help you with work. So, make good use of me today. I will try my best to meet your needs!"
Isla promised Sheryl, putting her hand on her chest.
"For real? Like, anything?" Sheryl teased Isla while smiling.
Suddenly, Isla felt like she shouldn't have made the promise. As she looked at Sheryl, her heart tightened, and she said carefully, "Please, don't ask me to help you kill people, okay?"
"What are you thinking?" Sheryl rolled her eyes at Isla.
Soon, they came to a street full of luxury stores.
Actually, Sheryl wasn't a huge fan of luxury and fashion brands. But she had to admit that shopping was one of the best ways for women to relax and cheer up.
Though Sheryl and Isla weren't regular customers there, almost all the employees knew them. Every time they dropped by, the employees were happy to see them. Salespeople always bowed and greeted them with bright smiles.
In turn, Sheryl and Isla always felt flattered. In less than an hour, they had bought a lot of clothes.
After shopping, Isla took Sheryl to a Japanese restaurant.
For one whole day, Sheryl had a great time with Isla. Just for a moment, Sheryl forgot all the pain that Charles had caused her.
After a great day, Isla drove Sheryl back to the company. Sheryl had the office all to herself. In the midst of the silence, all the painful memories came back to haunt Sheryl again. She felt sad all over again. Sadder even than before.
She didn't want to be a two-faced person. Though she didn't want to be the saddest person in front of other people, she didn't know how long she could last. It was true that shopping with Isla could ease the burden she felt, but it only lasted for a short time. When she was alone, sadness crept into her core.
Lowering her head on the desk, she looked at the files, not nearly as happy or as excited as before.
"Knock, knock!" Someone knocked on Sheryl's office door.
"Come in!" Sheryl said, lifting her head.
Holding a bunch of files, Phoebe walked into the office. One by one, she explained what the files were about.
Half an hour later, Phoebe finally finished her report. However, too upset to have even focused on Phoebe, Sheryl hadn't understood a word. To Phoebe, she said, "Okay, I will sign them later. You can go back to work now."
It was very rare for Phoebe to be surprised, and she was surprised! What she felt was that her hard work had gone in vain. She opened her mouth to say something, but what came out was something opposite of what was in her mind.
"Okay, President Xia."
Not clueless about everything around her, Phoebe understood why Sheryl was in a bad mood. She knew she'd better leave her alone. So, she left the office and shut the door quietly.
Everything was silent in the office again, and Sheryl didn't like the feeling. In her loneliness, Sheryl's thoughts wandered back to Charles and their broken marriage. No matter how hard she tried to forget, it just kept haunting her. The feeling wouldn't go away. She needed a distraction.
At the hospital
Seriously injured, Jason couldn't be discharged from the hospital yet. It had been days since he was beaten up by Black. Right at that moment, he was still taking a rest on the bed. Arriving with furrowed brows was Holley, bringing him lunch.
"Time for lunch!" Holley said impatiently.
Having just woken up, Jason rubbed his eyes and looked at Holley lovingly. Teasing her, Jason said, "You finally came to see me. I guess the Boss asked you to do so, right? Otherwise, you wouldn't be here." "I really don't understand why you wanted me to bring you lunch. There is a canteen here," Holley answered coldly with crossed arms.
Struggling, Jason sat up. Then, he got out of his bed and walked towards Holley. Looking her from head to toe, he opened his mouth and said, "Holley, in case you've forgotten, you are my woman. What would people think of you if you never come to visit me? They will think I dumped you. That will be pretty humiliating for you, won't it, President Ye?"
Mocking Holley, Jason put his hand on her shoulder. Holley got annoyed and shook off his hand. Furrowing her brows, Holley took a step back, pointed her fingers at him, and said, "Jason, let me remind you, we are a fake couple. Who do you think you are, my real boyfriend?"
Feeling Holley's anger, Jason smiled coldly and answered back, "And, who do you think you are? As far as I know, you are far from being a decent woman. Don't pretend you're so classy in front of me. I am no buying that!"
What Jason said made Holley sick.
"I already brought you lunch. Enjoy your meal!"
Turning around, Holley left.
Behind her, Jason yelled, "Holley! I want pork ribs tomorrow!"
"You...!" Trying hard, Holley suppressed her anger. But what Jason had just said made her anger grow stronger.
"Be careful. We're at the hospital. People are watching us."
Oozing with confidence, Jason knew that Holley wouldn't dare lash out in public. He laid back on his bed and looked at Holley condescendingly.
"There's no need for reminding me. And, don't push me too far, Jason. A desperate dog will leap over a wall, you know?!"
Grinding her teeth, she glared at Jason. She would have killed Jason numerous times if it had been legal to murder people.
