Chapter 544

She should've known better. How on earth would a smart guy like Isaac ever seriously marry her?

Her marriage.

Her kids

Her grandma

All were part of Isaac's cunning plan!

Lucky for her, she never fell for it

Before Joie left, she tossed a bank card on the table.

"Take this dough and scram, Brittany"" she said and left.

The door slammed shut behind her.

Brittany swiped everything off her desk in a fit of anger

Files, a glass, picture frames-all crashed to the floor, the clatter deafening.

Hearing that Joie had been there and left Brittany in a fit of rage, Kari Malone was restless

She ditched work and hurried to Brittany's office.

"Bri, are you okay?" she asked.

Inside the office, Brittany wiped her face hard. She stuffed the files into a drawer, then took a deep breath. Im fine. You go on."

Kari hesitated for a few seconds, then left.

Brittany collapsed into her chair. It took her a while to get up and gather her paperwork to take home.

When she got home, she noticed the AC was on.

There were noises coming from the kitchen.

"You're home." William poked his head out of the kitchen and said.

Seeing the tears welling up in Brittany's eyes, he looked surprised.

He put down what he was doing and quickly walked toward her. "What's wrong?"

Brittany choked back her bitterness, trying to stay rational. "Isaac and I are getting a divorce."

She paused, then corrected herself. "No, I should say, we were never married to begin with."

William was shocked. "Bri, what do you mean?"

"We were never married from the start," Brittany licked her dry lips.

"Bri... It's okay Don't be upset"

William mustered up some courage and hugged her, patting her back gently. He knew Brittany truly loved Isaac. And all those years, she had been deceived by him. Of course, she was upset. Brittany leaned into him, her eyes wet, but no tears fell.

She even found it somewhat amusing. No wonder Isaac had the guts to get engaged to Shona Bennett. They were never husband and wife to begin with, so what's there to betray? William took her to her room, then wiped away her tears. He comforted her, saying, "I'll stay with you tonight. Get some rest. If anything comes up, just let me know, okay?" Brittany was too drained to respond. Once William left, she flopped onto her bed and fell into a deep sleep.

William stayed all night. He looked through the documents and confirmed that Brittany and Isaac were indeed never married five years ago He didn't know whether to be happy or sad. When Brittany woke up, she came out of her room and saw William lying on the couch.

Perhaps he was worried she would need him in the middle of the night, so he didn't even take off his prosthetic and curled up on the couch, looking somewhat pitiful

Brittany went back to her room. When she came out, she had a thin blanket in her hand. She draped it over him, then tiptoed to the bathroom

After her shower, Brittany went into the kitchen and made breakfast.

The smell of food woke William up.

"Bri, you're up?"

Brittany came out with a sandwich, her smile radiant. "Time for breakfast."

William thought she'd be down in the dumps for a few days, but to his surprise, she bounced back so quickly.

Brittany could tell he was worried. "I was a bit over the top last night. Now, I think it's a good thing. At least I won't have to go through a legal battle with him." William was both amused and helpless.

Was she trying to comfort herself?

He reached out for the sandwich. "Okay."

They both sat at the dining table. Brittany took a sip of milk.

"William, I promised you that once I got divorced, we would be together. Now..
