Chapter 47: Meeting again

Anya needed not telling who it was. His gaze threatened to burn a hole through her. She just did not understand why he was staring so much. She had regretted taking on this project. But as time went on, she regretted it even more.

James saw that Daniel could not keep his eyes off Anya; it was as though he wished to burn at hole through her being. He knew his friend was hurt, but there was nothing that could be done at this point but take things slowly. If he kept staring at her, so many people would start to notice. He cleared his throat, pulling Daniel from his daze.

Daniel couldn't help himself. He had never really looked at Anya well all through their marriage. He was only now discovering that she was so beautiful. He felt lost when he lost her, but as he looked at her now, it was as though he was tasting the first nectar of love. But no matter how much he looked, his Anya refused to look his way. The more she ignored him, the more his frustration grew.

But his frustration extended past her indifference. He could not help but notice that Anya was quite close to Stanley. He leaned into her too often; it was an eyesore. He was not the only one who noticed this; James had already noticed their closeness. Even though they were not dating, they were obviously friends. It did not help that Stanley had this rare, soft look in his eyes when he looked at Anya. James could feel the mood of the person beside him dip dangerously.

"So, Mr. Forest, how do you and Miss Jones know each other?" James asked.

"We went to the same university," Stanley answered.

"Oh, boss, you knew Anya all this while, and you did not introduce us?" Someone asked Stanley, which led to a barrage of questions from his staff.

"Boss, you know I have been a fan this long; how could you do this to me?"

""How did you keep a straight face all this while? another asked.

"We missed our plane last year to see an exhibit in Paris, and you did not even say anything. You entered the plane and left us behind."

"Boss, I thought we were a team." The questions and dissatisfaction seemed endless. Stanley saw that he was getting overrun and raised his hand in surrender, to Anya's complete amusement.

"Don't blame him too much; we just reconnected recently when I moved here." Anya came forward to help him out, her eyes dancing with laughter.

"Miss Anya, are you sure? Boss seems like the kind of person to stab someone in the back,"

someone said.

"He is a capitalist, Miss Anya; it is something he can do," another protested.

"It's true; I didn't even know it was her. I sent so many emails for her to collaborate with us for a month but got no reply. I even pulled some strings to get her number, and when I dialed it, I found that it was already on my phone. Do you know how much I spent to get that number?" Stanley defended himself.

"Fine, fine, I believe you. But you are still paying for this meal," someone said, and laughter erupted in the room.

"Mr. Forest is quite familiar with his staff," James commented while looking around the table.

"We spent too much time together in the labs; please forgive us," Stanley apologized.

"It is fine. It is quite refreshing to see," James waved dismissively.

"What is your expected time for testing to end?" Daniel, who had kept more silent than at monk, finally spoke, and the topic swayed into business.

When Anya saw that the topic had shifted, she scoffed in her heart. Always so strict and serious, while taking no breaks, she scoffed at Daniel. She was used to this side of him; his words were precious as gold. Unless it was something important, he would not even bother to talk. After a while of talking, Daniel got up and expressed to leave to the shock of James. He had thought that he would never leave since Anya was there. But he kept his expression in check and said their greetings before leaving.

When they walked out, Daniel paused in a corridor instead of leaving.

"Why did you say to leave? Didn't you say you wanted to see her? Why leave?"

"I will wait for her here," he declared.

"How are you sure she will come out?" James asked. But before he could finish his words, Anya truly came out.

Anya had long been tired of this gathering from the moment she walked in. She only came as a favor to Stanley. She was not sure what kept her this long. For some reason, Daniel's heavy stare kept her in her seat. When he left, she was suddenly drained. She had thought she had grown courage, but it seems she was wrong. She was as much in love with this man as she was afraid. This fear kept her in line throughout their marriage. As much as her love for him had grown cold, it seems she was still somewhat afraid. She congratulated herself for not letting anything show while he was around.

She stayed back a while and ate a bit before greeting Stanley goodnight, preparing to leave. Stanley offered to drive her back, but she refused. She did not want to get in the way of what seemed to be a good night for Stanley and his colleagues. She had heard of the successful presentation they had that afternoon. This was a company celebration, and she had no business being here. She had done enough by just showing up. Now it was time to leave. Saying another round of goodbyes, she stepped out of the private room. She walked a bit and paused at the sight of a man in the corridor. She found it hard to keep a straight face when she noticed that he seemed to be waiting for her.

Chapter 47: Merling

Anya wondered what he was doing here? He leaned on the wall, staring at her. Even a person with half a brain will be able to tell that he was waiting for het. She noticed the person beside him, the friend he had arrived with, and decided to pretend he was not here for her and walk away. But just when she was about to walk past him, he stepped forward to block her path.

"Anya," he said.

"Mr. Shaw," she answered, "I thought you had left. Is something the matter? Are you waiting for someone?" she asked.

"I am waiting for you," he answered. Anya was quite taken aback by his soft voice. She had never heard him talk to her this way before.

"Is something the matter?" she recovered and asked.

"Can we replace somewhere to talk?" Daniel asked. She was just about to refuse when James stepped in.

"It is best not to get in the way of those walking around. How about a private room? I just booked one," he said. Anya looked his way with a stiff face. This must be one of Daniel's friends. She was not too familiar with any of them. She considered her options. If there really is something he needs to address, it was best if they got it out of the way quickly. She nodded, and James called over a waiter to show them to their private room.

"I will wait outside," James said the moment the two of them were inside and retreated to give them some privacy. Now the only two left in the room, Anya felt suffocated by Daniel's

presence.

"What is this about Mr. Shaw?" she asked him.

"We should sit," Daniel suggested.

"I am fine standing; I have been sitting all night, Mr. Shaw."
