The Blood Moon Twins -
Chapter 150
REMY
I felt the shift in the power around us before I saw it. Everything became magnified, and I felt the magic in my body flowing deeper than it ever had before. "The blood moon," Raven whispered in my head.
I looked into the sky, and I saw the moon start to turn red as the total lunar eclipse began. The light around us glimmered red, and I wasn't the only one who was receiving a boost of power from this blood moon. I could feel the bloodlust growing all around me, even in my own chest. These were the warnings I had read about months ago. The blood moon strengthened all kinds, but it wasn't without a cost. The increased power resulted in a decrease in control and willpower.
The battle was bloody before, but I had no doubt that it was about to get a lot bloodier.
I pulled my attention away from the moon and looked back at Draven and Blade. They hadn't stopped fighting for even a second, and the fight was not going in Blade's favor. Even from here, I could see blood trickling down his body in various places. He was putting his all into fighting Draven, but Draven was simply stronger than him. If I didn't want him to end up dead like my vision foretold, I had to get over to him and help him before it was too late.
I started to shift over to Blade, but before I went anywhere, an invisible force hit my stomach, knocking me to the ground.
"You're mine," the creature's voice rang in my head. "Let go of all of your earthly desires, and together we can be everything you need." "Never," I choked out, trying to catch my breath.
A screech rang through the field, and even Draven and Blade had to cover their ears to block the rattling noise. The screeching grew louder as the ground shook once again. A billow of shadows spilled from the gaping hole in the ground. The creature emerged, and it looked larger than the other times I had faced it.
It hovered between Blade and myself, and I could feel its power cutting me off from my own magic. I knew I wouldn't be able to shift to Blade while it was lingering between us. I had to get around and replace my way to Blade. I couldn't see him behind the black wall that was so large it seemed to block out the red light of the moon. My hands shook as I stared at the creature that could easily tear apart this world if it got its hands on me.
"Remy," Caulder said, appearing from thin air. He knelt next to me and helped me to my feet. "Are you okay?"
"Blade," I choked out, trying to move towards the creature.
"Where is he?" Caulder asked.
I took a breath, knowing I couldn't let myself panic. If I did, I would lose precious time and energy. "He's on the other side of that creature. I can't shift to him, but he's fighting Draven. I have to help him."
Caulder held onto my arm, even after I was steady on my feet. He stared at the creature before us, his eyes narrowing with determination.
"I stopped this thing once when I was escaping the Council of Magic," Caulder said. His jaw tensed at the memory. "If we put a barrier around it, we can stop it temporarily, but if we don't get rid of it, then it will attack everything."
The creature howled again. It hadn't started attacking yet, but I could feel its invisible tendrils trying to swirl around my brain and take control over me. I was its main focus, which meant we could save the others from the horrors this thing could cause if we kept its focus on me.
"I think I know how to defeat it," I said. The terror the creature instilled in me was threatening every cell in my body to completely freeze, but the magic in my core was stirring and begging to be released.
"How?" Caulder asked. He kept his eyes glued to the creature, ready to run if it came after us.
"I need to trigger the prophecy," I said with a confidence I didn't understand. I had been terrified of triggering the prophecy for months now. Even after discovering that it wasn't a guaranteed bad thing, I didn't trust myself to handle that much power. However, now, it felt different. It felt like triggering the prophecy was the only way to win this battle and defeat this creature.
"No!" the creature screeched in my head, making me cover my ears. It didn't dull the sound as my head pounded from the pain radiating inside. The harsh resistance to my plan told me this was the right choice.
"How long do you need?" Caulder asked. He didn't question my choice to my relief. I could feel his trust through our mate bond.
"I don't know," I admitted. "As long as possible."
Caulder held out his hand. "Help me create the barrier around the creature to keep it contained. I will maintain the magic for as long as possible, but you need to hurry. Even with the blood moon feeding my magic, I don't know how long I will last."
I grabbed his hand and nodded. The skin contact acted like a conductor, and the magic began flowing through us, growing stronger as we acted like one entity. We had never done this specific kind of magic together, but with all of our practice of going to the past, our magic already knew how to work together. For a moment, we thought and acted like one person with two bodies.
We reached our hands up and pointed our palms at the creature. I saw a barrier surround the creature in my head, and seconds later, a clear blue magic erupted from both of our hands. The creature screeched again, but as our magic created a barrier around it, the sound quieted, and the darkness in my own body subsided. We didn't stop until the creature was completely encapsulated.
"Do what you need to do," Caulder said when he was sure the creature was contained.
"What about you?" I looked around at all of the fighting going on around us. All it would take was another sorcerer or vampire to attack Caulder to disrupt him from keeping the creature contained and putting his life in danger.
"I'll be fine. Go. Blade needs you," he said. He let go of my hand and held it next to his other one. His face grew more strained, and I knew holding the barrier was taking everything he had without me to help him.
I wanted to stay and help him, but I knew I would be more useful elsewhere. I shifted to the other side of the creature now that its power wasn't limiting my own. Blade and Draven were still fighting, but Blade looked like he was in rough condition. Draven was giving him a beating, and he needed my help.
"Stop it!" I screamed, rushing towards Draven. My feet felt lighter as the power of the blood moon continued to flow through me.
I was only a few feet away from them when Draven glanced at me, triumph in his eyes. He rammed his hand forward, and just like my vision, it went straight through Blade's chest. Everything felt like it shattered into a million pieces as Blade gasped for air. Then the blood came, gushing the moment Draven pulled his hand out.
I didn't stop moving as I rushed to Blade's side, sliding myself between the two vampires. I sent a blast of magic towards Draven as I elbowed him in the gut. He was taken aback by my sudden attack and completely lost his balance. At the same time, I grabbed Blade, and then I shifted us as far away as my magic could possibly allow.
The forest was surprisingly quiet. I couldn't even hear the fighting in the distance, and I had no idea how far I had shifted. This had to have been the farthest I had ever traveled before, and I didn't even know I was capable of such magic. However, between the blood moon rising high in the sky and the adrenaline and fear coursing through my veins as I saw Blade stabbed, my skin was on fire.
I looked down at Blade, and my chest started collapsing. I laid him on the ground and covered the hole in his chest with my hands to stop the bleeding.
"No, no, no," I repeated over and over again. This couldn't be happening. I could feel Blade's heartbeat going crazy as his body fought to live, but I knew this was a fatal wound if I didn't do something about it.
Blade's hand grabbed mine, but there was no strength to it. "I'm sorry."
"Don't you apologize. You're not going anywhere." I bit down on my bottom lip to stop myself from crying. I bit down so hard that I tasted blood.
"No matter what..." He paused, trying to catch his breath, but he could barely breathe. "Don't let him take you."
"Stop that," I snapped, barely holding it together. "You're going to be fine." Magic. I needed to summon my magic to heal him.
He opened his mouth to speak again, but no words came out. His hand lost all of its strength and fell away from mine.
"You're not dying," I said through gritted teeth. "I need you. I need you so we can save everyone back there, and I need you so we can live that future together that you described, okay? I can't see a future without you by my side."
I focused my energy into Blade's wound. I had never healed something this serious before, and I didn't even know if it was possible. Blade's heart was still beating, but it was so faint, I could hardly hear it. I squeezed my eyes shut and prayed to the Moon Goddess to save Blade.
My hands grew hot as I channeled my magic into Blade's wound. I waited for him to stir awake, but he was so still. His heartbeat grew fainter and fainter, and my magic wasn't enough to save him. I didn't understand why. Was it because he was a vampire and was resistant to my magic? Blade had always let his vampire healing abilities take over, so we hadn't tried to heal him with magic before.
Tears streamed down my face. "I'm sorry," I sobbed, my chest heaving with panic. This couldn't end like this. "I'm so sorry. It's my fault this happened. Please don't leave me
