The Cherished Wife (Noelle and Charles) -
Chapter 791
Milo felt a headache coming on. He had originally intended to use this opportunity to force Charles into submission, but it turned out that Charles was far more difficult to deal with than he had anticipated.
In fact, Charles had not even made a move yet and the Bakers were already in disarray.
"Enough! I gathered you here to discuss a solution, but all you do is bicker!" Maverick Baker, the head of the Bakers and Milo's father, said impatiently.
He was glaring at both Milo and Harper.
"Fine, it seems none of you can come up with anything useful. You can all leave now. Milo, stay behind!"
After the others had left, Maverick slammed his cane hard on the floor in frustration. "Look at what you've done! I told you from the start not to involve Janet in this. There are plenty of ways to build good relations with the Hoffmans, and the Bakers have no shortage of eligible women. Why insist on her?"
"Dad!" Milo frowned, clearly displeased. "This isn't Janet's fault. She-"
"It's not her fault? I know you feel guilty about what we did to her mother back then. You've been trying to make it up to her. But you've done more than enough for her.
"She's been living comfortably, always dressed in the best and fed with the finest. No other child in the Bakers has had the treatment she has enjoyed. But there are limits to your kindness.
"Three years ago, it was you acting of your own accord, and don't think I don't know about it. Charles might be young, but he's incredibly shrewd. Mark my words, his future success will surpass his current achievements."
"I know," Milo replied. It was precisely because he recognized Charles' potential that he wanted Janet to secure Charles, ensuring a long-lasting and stable relationship between the Bakers and the Hoffmans.
It was this foresight that had led Milo to arrange Clarisse's marriage to Mateo years ago instead of to Henry.
Of course, aside from Milo and Maverick, no one else knew the full story. "Back then, when I arranged for Clarisse to marry Mateo, didn't you agree to it, Dad?"
"That was different! Clarisse is my daughter. She's well-educated, poised, and most importantly, she's not sick!"
Maverick had no intention of comparing his daughter to someone with mental health issues.
"Alright, enough of that. Tomorrow, you'll go to Brookville. This situation must be dealt with immediately. The Hoffmans won't escalate things. After all, Clarisse is still their daughter-in-law. I know Mateo, and he would never harm her."
"Yes, that was my plan as well." Milo was determined to resolve the issue before Charles could make a move and turn things even more against them.
He could not let Janet ruin the Bakers. "I'll bring Janet back this time. As for Clarisse..."
"She's theirs now, and a daughter who marries out no longer belongs to us. We made the mistake of keeping her too close for too long Let her stay with the Hoffmans for good this time." Maverick sighed as he took the tea Milo handed him.
"Milo, you're my son. You know my thoughts better than anyone. The future of the Bakers will be yours, but you must remember-no matter what, Janet is an outsider. Your true successor is Jace. Do you understand?"
