Midnight Meeting

Moon slept all that day, but her sleep was restless and full of dreams. She kept reliving her past life through her dreams. Emily had taken Bella for the night. She told Colin it helped her to have Bella with her while Ben was in the clinic recovering. The girl seems to have Moon’s knack for calming Rose. The little baby took to Bella instantly and she seems to adore her.

Moon sighs, wishing she could go check on her, but she doesn’t want to disturb everyone in the middle of the night. Colin is sleeping soundly, making her wonder if he had gotten any rest while she was unconscious. She moves slowly and manages to escape his arms without waking him.

Heading out of the room, she can’t sleep anymore, and she is feeling to restless to sleep, she doesn’t want to disturb him while he looks so peaceful. He was so worried earlier and it showed.

Kiara, do you think Eos is gone now? Moon poses the question to her wolf as the wolf yawns and stretches in her mind.

I’m not sure. I think she is, but can you really kill a god like that. I didn’t see what happened in the blast. It was too bright for me to see anything. Helios was the only one that ran into the blast unbothered by the light. So maybe he knows something? Do you think we could replace him if we tried? Kiara asks hopefully.

I don’t know, but it might be worth a try. Moon thinks about it, and where would she even replace him? It seems impossible and hopeless to guess where to even look for him.

She is wandering around the apartment, trying calm her thoughts. The moonlight is the only light in the room, and she moves to the window to look out at it.

“Selene, can you hear me? I need to talk to Helios. How do I replace him?” She murmurs to herself, not expecting an answer.

“And why do you want to talk to me,” Helios answers making Moon spin around quickly at the sudden voice. Her eyes go wide seeing him standing in the middle of the room.

“You are here? I will never get used to the fact that you all seem to like to appear out of nowhere.” She breathes, still in shock.

“Perk of the whole god title.” He shrugs, sitting down in an armchair, making himself comfortable. “What did you want to ask me?”

Moon feels like all her questions left her head for a moment, and she blinks, trying to recover them.

“Oh yeah, I did want to ask you somethings, didn’t I. I didn’t expect you to show up.” She shrugs, shaking her head and recovering her thoughts. She sits on the sofa feeling a bit strange having a conversation with him like this is normal.

“Well, I can guess what you want to know, but it is probably better if you just ask me.” He raises a blond brow and gives her half a smile.

“Right; what happened when you ran into the light. I couldn’t see it was too bright, and I want to know what happened.” Moon looks at him expectantly, waiting for his reply.

“No, you want to know if I saw Eos die?” He corrects her knowing that was really what she wanted to ask. “The answer is no, I didn’t see her die. I saw her vanish in the blast, but the blast was caused by Kenna, and I don’t know if that was enough to kill Eos or only injure her. Selene is looking for her, but she won’t be found if she doesn’t want to be.”

Moon sinks at the information. It isn’t what she wants to hear. She wanted to hear. The goddess was destroyed and would never bother them again.

“Do you believe she is alive?” She asks, slowly hanging her head, feeling like she may have failed and they will only have to face her yet again.

“I believe she is alive and nursing her wounds. I also believe she will think twice about bothering the wolves for a while now. You and Kenna will only become more powerful.” He assures her.

“What about Bella and her wolf? What happens now?” Moon looks up suddenly, worrying that Bella will have her wolf at such a young age and what that might do.

“I think I can answer that better than he can.” Selene’s voice comes from the window Moon was standing at only moments ago. Moon isn’t even surprised at this point.

Selene walks toward them and joining Moon on the sofa. She acts like this is all perfectly normal now. Helios has been watching her, and Moon is waiting for an explanation.

“What, not surprised to see me?” Selene asks her.

“At this point, no.” Moon is blunt, wanting to know about Bella and her wolf more than caring about being polite. “About Bella’s wolf?” Moon urges her to continue.

“Well, I will get to the point then,” Selene says, a little ruffled but not showing it. “Bella doesn’t remember any of it. She doesn’t remember shifting the first time or anything after it. As far as she knows, she fainted. Colin ordered silence from everyone about Bella. Even little Sam has been ordered to stay quiet about it. I guess he’s putting his new ability to the test.”

Moon feels a little bad that even Sam was ordered to stay not to say anything. It hurts Moon that this is being kept from Bella, but part of her feels it is better this way.

“People will still treat her differently.” Moon sighs, knowing how that feels.

“They will for a time, but my brother has asked me to seal her wolf away until she is older and more capable of handling it. I reluctantly agreed with him. He pointed out that the power Bella has must be treated carefully. As she grows, she will replace she is very different than the others around her.”

“I have done what I can to help keep her abilities at bay and protect her until she is older,” Helios adds.

“The necklace,” Moon states, looking at him knowingly.

“Yes, it has two purposes to protect her and others from her powers. Bella doesn’t need her wolf to use her powers; the older she gets, the more powerful she will become. She could burn the world if she wants to or be the warm light to guide others.” Helios is serious in his statement.

“Then why leave her here? If she is your daughter, why not raise her and teach her to use her gifts?” Moon shoots back, but it would break her heart to lose Bella.

“I can’t take her for many of my own reasons. She is happy here, and she would be shunned for being less than in my world of gods.” Helios looks sad for a moment. “I believe she will be better off here with you and Colin to guide her. You love her and care for her, and that is more important. I can’t be the father I should be for her, and she doesn’t know me as one.” Helios looks away from Moon, not able to bare the sadness for him she has on her face.

“Treat her well, and when she is older, she will regain her wolf and power. Make sure she uses it well.” Selene warns.

Moon nods, the full weight of her responsibility weighing on her now. Helios’s words sink in; she could burn the world if she wanted to. Could Bella really do that?
