The Ex and Her Riches -
Chapter 353
Chapter 353
Gwendolyn didn’t look back. Narrowing her eyes, she uttered in a frigid tone, “I’m afraid one life isn’tenough. Perhaps I’ll consider it if you can die up to a thousand times.”
After saying that, she didn’t stick around and went to her room upstairs, locking the door. She threwaway the robe that had been touched by Charles and took out a new one from the wardrobe, hanging iton the coat stand before going to bed.
Nonetheless, she couldn’t fall asleep. As she shut her eyes, images of the past emerged in her mind. She began to recall her happy childhood memories with Charles.
Gwendolyn remembered how she used to admire and look up to him as well as the way she called hisname affectionately.
Surprisingly, she found herself feeling sorry for a despicable jerk like Charles and wondered if it wasbecause of her pregnancy that she had become more compassionate and sentimental.
Burying her head under the covers, she forced herself to stop thinking about the past she shared withCharles. I should instead think about how much Cedrick has suffered for the past six months becauseof him!
As her thoughts were a jumbled mess, Gwendolyn heard the sound of a car driving away and assumedthat it was Charles leaving.
She finally felt more at ease. Soon, exhaustion overtook her, lulling her into a deep sleep.
Meanwhile, in Salinsburgh of Chanaea, the five-day deadline had passed.
Early in the morning, Yael arrived at the conference hall that Cedrick had arranged in advance.
Xander couldn’t come along this time as he had been heavily injured a few days ago.
Apart from a few highly-respected elders of the Jenson family, Yael also brought some of the directorsfrom the Jenson Group.
From afar, the large group of people emanated an intimidating and imposing aura.
Soon after, Craig and his subordinates from the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrived at theconference hall too.
The men who were clad in military uniforms stood tall and sturdy, instantly overshadowing Yael and therest.
Although Yael felt somewhat displeased, he considered them allies and still stepped forward to greetthem amicably.
Subsequently, the two started chatting casually.
Almost three hours had passed, but Cedrick was still nowhere to be seen.
Yael grew impatient and instructed his bodyguards, “Head over to Harrick Villa and check out whatCedrick is up to. How can he make us wait for so long?”
“All right.”
The bodyguard had just reached the entrance when the door creaked open.
Instantly, everyone in the hall put on a solemn expression and stood up to welcome the arrival.
Nevertheless, to their surprise, Neville was the only one who stepped in.
Furrowing his brows, Yael asked in displeasure, “Where is Cedrick? Why are you alone?”
The directors behind him chimed in, “Yeah! Where is Mr. Cedrick? Didn’t he promise that he would giveus an explanation today? Don’t tell me he’s merely trying to fool us! Even though we are all deeplysaddened by Mr. Cedrick’s loss of eyesight, the handover of power has to be done in a timely manner!”
Another person added, “Exactly! We didn’t hear anything from Mr. Cedrick for the past few days, nor dowe know where he is. We’re going to start suspecting that Mr. Cedrick has died of illness if we don’tsee him soon.”
Craig sat down in a nonchalant manner, calmly listening to the directors of Jenson Group ridiculingCedrick.
Everyone else seated on Craig’s side remained quiet and composed as well.
Neville stole a glance at Craig before explaining to Yael, “Mr. Cedrick has something urgent to attendto. Hence, the meeting is rescheduled to the afternoon.”
“What?”
Hearing that, the crowd went into an uproar almost immediately.
Yael’s expression clouded over, and he narrowed his eagle-like eyes as he kept his hostile gaze fixatedon Neville.
“The elders from the Jenson family have all come to sit in on the handover. How could hedisrespectfully leave the elders waiting here?”
However, Neville stubbornly refused to relent and answered firmly, “I only follow orders from Mr.Cedrick.”
The elders behind Yael were irritated by his remark and started clamoring, criticizing Cedrick for hisdiscourtesy.
Ignoring them, Neville tapped the table and voiced, “Those of you who refuse to wait, feel free to leave.Otherwise, please sit down and behave if you wish to listen to Mr. Cedrick’s explanation.”
After saying that, Neville turned around and left. He then ordered his men to guard the entrance andforbid the crowd from making a ruckus inside.
Staring at the imposing soldiers standing outside, Yael couldn’t help but sneer, “Fine, I’ll wait until theafternoon. I wonder what other tricks he has up his sleeve!”
Since Neville had announced that those who chose to leave the conference hall would not be allowedentry again, no one dared to take a step out. They all remained in the room and ate the takeout thatNeville delivered for lunch.
Craig and his men, who had experienced countless hardships in the military, had no problem with themeals that Neville prepared.
Yael and his faction, on the other hand, were accustomed to a luxurious life. Naturally, they weren’tused to eating plain and bland meals. As their frustration grew, they became increasingly agitated.
One of the directors, Roger Zaborowski, threw the food on the floor and complained, “What is Mr.Cedrick’s problem? I can’t believe he expects us to eat this kind of food! He sets all these rules andforbids us from leaving, but he still hasn’t shown up yet! Is he messing with us?”
Pointing at the door, Neville suggested, “There’s a five-star hotel right next to the building, Mr.Zaborowski. You may enjoy a scrumptious meal there. However, there’s no need for you to return later.”
Stumped by Neville’s suggestion, Roger furiously threw all the other directors’ takeout on the floor, making a huge mess. The conference hall’s floor was instantly littered with food.
“Why are all of you still eating? I want to see Mr. Cedrick now! I demand a reasonable explanation fromhim!”
Many people chimed in, and the atmosphere plunged into chaos.
As the situation spiraled out of control, the door swung open once again. A man’s cold and stern voicetraveled into the room. “I’ll give you the explanation you want, Mr. Zaborowski.”
Instantaneously, the noise in the conference hall died down.
Everyone instinctively turned to look at the entrance.
“It’s Mr. Cedrick!”
“Mr. Cedrick is finally here!”
Cedrick looked the same as he was a few days ago. He was still wearing sunglasses and a black tophat, dressed in an elegant formal suit.
The bandage on his head was well hidden underneath his hat.
Meanwhile, Treyton and Swain trailed behind him.
Swain went to stand next to Neville while Treyton sat in a corner.
Afterward, Cedrick walked straight to the main seat of the conference hall.
Everyone present attempted to look at his eyes through his sunglasses.
Roger asked in puzzlement, “Mr. Cedrick, aren’t you blind? Are you playing tricks on us?”
Ignoring him, Cedrick raised his hand slightly at Neville and Swain. “Everyone here wants anexplanation. For the past few days, I’ve prepared a statement for each and every one of you,” saidCedrick.
Neville hastily brought out a stack of documents. Then, he and Swain started distributing themaccording to the names of the attendees.
As the documents were being handed out, everyone exchanged confused glances with each other, wondering what Cedrick was up to.
However, as everyone received the documents, their expressions changed dramatically.
Roger, who had a bad temper, stood up and exclaimed, “How dare you remove me from the board, Mr.Cedrick? So this is the explanation you’re giving me?”
In fact, the documents that everyone received were penalty notices.
The esteemed elders of the Jenson family were already retired and no longer actively involved in theaffairs of the Jenson Group. As such, the penalties given by Cedrick were directed toward theirdescendants who were currently serving in the company.
The most severe punishment received by the Jenson family was imposed on Yael. He was transferredfrom the Jenson Group to a subsidiary of Mapleton, where he was assigned to a less important positionwith fewer responsibilities.
Yael was infuriated. Slamming the table, he stood up. “This is outrageous! We’ve waited until today foryou to hand over the power. What do you mean by giving us penalty notices? Now that you’re blind, you’re not worthy of this position. Why are you still hogging the position?”
Chaos ensued as the rest chimed in, voicing their displeasure.
Instead of answering him, Cedrick showed a frosty look as he took off his sunglasses in front ofeveryone.
