Unknown pov

There was a storm coming, he could feel it. His people would be pulled into it. It was only a matter of time. The werebears were always looked down on in the shifter world, called dumb. However, anytime shifters needed some muscle bears were the first ones they called for help.

Not this time, we wouldn’t be cannon fodder. It’s time to beat the storm. He quickly packed a bag, and left a note. He left the pack house in the dead of night so no one would know he was gone until morning. It’s time to replace some answers.

Penelope’s POV

Penelope was with the group when the witches were able to detect Liliana.

“We got her!” Penelope tossed Callum at alpha Liam and went to stand with Luka and Nat. Killian looked like he wanted to protest but she gave a small growl. Luka teleported them to a small clearing, Penelope was quick to orient herself, it was her fifth time teleporting.

“Liliana!” Nat yelled and started running. Penelope and the others followed her. Lili was being held by a giant werebear, but it was obvious the two of them were escaping. Penelope was assessing her injuries when Killian caught up.

“Who the f.uck are you?” He growled.

“Oh stow it Killian! Can’t you see he helped get her out of there. She’s loosing too much b***d we need to get her back. Killian, you take the men and go search the area. Nat can you teleport us all back?”

“Yes I can,” Svetlana said and the five of them evaporated. They reappeared into the pack infirmary. Penelope went into doctor mode. She found the quickest gurney,

“The Lina’s back and she’s loosing too much b***d. She had multiple stab wounds.” She brought the gurney back to the werebear. He set her sister down on it, and people surrounded her. Some trying to push her out of the way. Penelope refused, despite just being a med student she still have more training than half of these people.

“Her leg, her leg,” the werebear was saying.

“What?” She finally managed to hear him over the chaos.

“Shut up!” She screamed in a powerful voice and the team quited down, but still worked.

“She was stabbed in the leg, she said it nicked her femoral artery. She used my belt,” the werebear continued to talk as Penelope found the stab wound. There is was, causing quite a bit of the trouble. Sh.it, Lili needed to be taken into surgery right away.

“She needs prepped for surgery right away! Her femoral artery has been nicked.” The team hasten to follow her lead. The nurses started getting Lili ready for surgery, while Penelope went in with the surgeons and doctors.

As Penelope was helping the team prep for surgery they looked over Liliana’s scans. The surgeon said,

“Damn I really wish Doctor Logan was still here.” The surgeon was about sixty- five and hadn’t been kept up to date the medical procedures.

“Me too.” Penelope whispered and everyone looked at her.

“Can you call him?” The surgeon asked her. Penelope felt a tear fall down her eyes.

“Even if I could, he’s in the middle of a war right now. He has enough on his plate, we have to do this on our own.” They all nodded. Penelope followed the team with a heavy heart. For the first time, she wished Noah was here. Penelope wished she didn’t push him away. She wished she accepted the damn mate bond. Penelope let a few tears fall. This is why she had always wanted to be a surgeon, she just wasn’t fast enough.

The surgery was going fast, Penelope only observed and helped with the instruments. Timing was everything in surgery. Just a second too late and the patient was a goner.

“It looks like it started healing at a rapid pace, but then got torn again. Probably during the escape.” The surgeon noted.

“Is that a problem?” Penelope asked, but the surgeon didn’t answer. The surgery continued on. Suddenly there was a commotion at the doors, sounded like the Alpha’s were back. Penelope didn’t pay them any mind. The nurses would keep them back.

Suddenly Liliana went into cardiac arrest.

“She’s flatlining,” the surgeon shouted. Penelope ran for the defibrillator that was placed a few feet away. She set the charge to 500 Jewels and set the charge.

“Clear.” Penelope places the paddles onto Liliana’s body, one up on her right chest and under the left side of her rib cage.

“Clear,” once it was confirmed no one was touching Lili, Penelope pressed the button to send the shock. Lili’s body gave a slight jerk.

“No response.”

“Clear.”

“Clear,” Penelope sent the shock again, and Liliana’s body jerked again. The sound of a flat line echoed in the room.

“Increase the shock to seven hundred Jewels,” the doctor said.

“Get ready to start oxygen,” Another nurse shouted. “Clear,”

“Clear.” Penelope shocked the body again. No response, the nurse started to force some oxygen, Penelope looked at the doctor.

“A thousand Jewels.” That was quite a jump, but Penelope didn’t comment, her sister was dead. A tear started to run down Penelope’s cheek. She adjusted the defibrillator, and waited for the charge to set.

Penelope heard Killian’s roar.

“No there bond is breaking ,” Penelope whispered, the defibrillator was set.

“Clear.”

“Clear,” Lili wasn’t responding to any of the methods, and Penelope was getting scared, but she kept working. Her work as a paramedic was paying off.

“Lili, you can’t do this to me!” She cried. Killian busted through the men and cried onto Lili’s bed.

Then something happened that could only be described as a miracle. Callum came walking up to his mothers side. Penelope tried to stop him, he didn’t need to see this. But Callum pushed her off and went to touch his forehead with hers. Penelope had seen the mother son duo do this often.

“Mommy, I still need you. Come back to me.” Then it was as if an essence came out or called to Liliana and Liliana responded. Then the heart monitor started responding. It started to slowly beeping. Everyone was in shock, Penelope was the first one to pull out of it.

“Callum go with Daddy, we have to take care of mommy.”

“Okay aunt Pe,” the couple left and the surgery continued.

Several hours later the surgery was finished and Liliana’s body was repaired. However it was the brain the doctors were concerned with. The doctors all decided to put her in a medical induced coma.

Now comes the hard part, letting her family know the bad news.

Noah pov

The past few days have been slow. For the past few hours Noah had been feeling anxious and scared. The feelings weren’t coming from him so they must be coming from Penelope. He hoped the situation with Lili got figured out. The last email he got from her didn’t say much.

Noah sent off a quick email, he wished he could call her. While you can call your family, it’s only in situations of life or death. I can’t go to my supervisor and say my mate is in trouble can I call her please? Everyone here is human.

His wolf paced in his mind.

“Mate needs us, we need to leave. Being here is dumb. Dumb human.”

“You know I can hear you right” Noah asked Niko. He swore he could see his wolf roll his eyes,

“Of course you can hear me. I am in your head. Dumb human, how did I get paired up with you.” Niko continued to pace, Noah tried to sleep but with the pacing and the fear he felt from Penelope it was impossible. For the first time since he left he felt regret for coming.

Authors note: I was unable to replace what doctors set the defibrillators to when treating a patient such as this. All I found was that defibrillators come set at 300 to 1000 jewels.
