The Fox and The Wolf
Chapter 31: Rogue attack

Jake

“Avery!” I saw Catherine yell running down the stairs.

Once she saw the front door slam shut, she sighed and looked defeated.

“What’s wrong with Avery?” My mom asked walking into the living room with my dad.

David and Liam had paused their game and Ashe ran outside in guessing to follow Avery.

“Ashe. Don’t!” My mom shouted but she was too late.

“She thinks she ran into her father at the grocery store.” Catherine said.

“Isn’t that good Momma C?” Liam asked.

She chuckled at the nickname, but shook her head. “No. Not after what he did.”

“What did he do?” I asked suddenly becoming very angry.

She gave me a sad smile. “Okay everyone. Sit down please. It’s kinda a long story.”

Once everyone sat down, my mom put her hand on Catherine’s back.

“You don’t have to tell us.” My mom said.

“No. You guys should probably know.” Catherine said looking at all of us, but her gaze stayed on me longer. “Her father owns William’s Corporation. It mainly deals with hotels, and he has a lot over the entire United States. He wanted a son so he could pass on the business to him. He thought girls were weak and weren’t able to handle and take care of this type of business.” My mom cut her off with a scoff.

“Stacy.” My dad said putting a hand over her mouth as he laughed.

My mom rolled her eyes and looked back at Catherine who was laughing.

“Anyway. Because of this business with the hotels, w was never home. So even when Avery was born, she doesn’t remember him because she never spent time with him. I remember the exact day I had Avery. The minute I held her in my hands, I was complete. But Dale wasn’t. He was disappointed. He was angry with me because I didn’t give him a son. Then Lilly came along. I remember that day too.” Catherine said smiling down at her hands.

My mom pulled her into a hug. “It’s okay.”

“I remember coming home to Avery and telling her about how she was going to be a big sister. She was so excited. She asked if she was going to have a little sister or brother and I told her sister. The reason why Lilly loves tea parties so much was because her very first one was with Avery. Avery taught her all the basics.” She laughed. “That night when Avery was in bed, dale came home. He asked me how the appointment went. I I wow what your thinking. ‘Ya he cared enough to ask about that.’ But that wasn’t what he cared about. All that mattered to him was if he was having a boy. I never got a, ‘how was your day?’ Or ‘how’s the baby doing?’ Nope. He asked if he got a boy. And when I told him no, he wouldn’t speak to me. He went right to bed.” Catherine paused and we all saw a couple of tears slip out. “That was the night he left. He left me a note saying how disappointed he was in me that I couldn’t give him a son. And that’s when he walked right out of our lives. That was also the last time I saw him.”

We were all quiet for a movement.

“That bastard!” My mom growled standing up. “What the hell! show could they little bitch do that too you?!”

“Stacy. It’s okay. Let Catherine finish.” My dad said grabbing her shoulders and trying to calm her down.”

“Right. Sorry.” My mom apologized offering a sweet smile.

“I never told Avery or Lilly about their father. I didn’t want them to know. I was scared that they would think it was their fault that he left. But Avery already thinks that.”

“Was he always like this?” Carlos asked.

We watched as Catherine shook her head and gave us another sad smile. “No. That’s the thing. That wasn’t the man I fell in love with. We met in high school. He was a senior when I was a sophomore. He was always smiling. He was the schools ‘it’ boy.” She laughed. “I was walking to class one day, and a few of his friends and himself were joking with each other and pushing each around. He got pushed into me, and all the books fell. W kept saying sorry to me as he picked hem up and handed them too me. When we locked eyes, it was like magic. That’s when we started dating.”

“So he wasn’t always an asshole?” David asked.

“David!” My mom yelled.

David laughed and put his hands up.

Catherine shook her head chucking. “No. When his father passed down the business to him. I was the first one to tell him. But I don’t know what happened. Something just…..changed in him. One morning he went to work all happy, then when he came back, it was like he was a changed man. And not the good type. He stared to become cold hearted. And he eventually just shut me out.”

“Do you know why?” My mom asked.

“No I don’t. But do you guys think it we wrong for me to keep it from the girls?”

“Of course not hun.” My mom said scooting closer to her. “To be honest. I would probably have done that too. You had an excellent reason. You didn’t want them to blame themselves for their father’s mistake.”

“But that’s the thing. I didn’t want to tell them. But part of me wanted too. They grew up their entire life without a father and I never told them why. I was scared every time Avery or Lilly brought it up. When Lilly was younger, she asked me almost every day when her daddy was coming back. It tore my heart to not tell her her truth. Do you know what it’s like to sit their and watch your kids grow up without a dad? To know that he is never coming back because he thought they weren’t good enough for him. To sit there and lie every single time when they asked where he was and why he isn’t coming back.” That’s when Catherine broke down in tears. “Now Avery thinks she is he reason he left. And I don’t know what to tell Avery.”

“We will be with you every step f the way Caroline.” John said smiling.

“Of course Momma C. You are part of this pack.” Liam said smiling as well. “And packs always stay together.”

“Something that heart felt came from you.” I said laughing.

He shrugged. “I’m a very down to earth guy.”

“You are going to make a great mate Liam. I can’t wait for you to get a mate.” Catherine said looking at him.

“I can’t wait for that to happen either.” Tony mumbled under his breath.

I had to hold back a laugh when Liam glared at Tony. But then turned his attention back to Caroline.

“Thanks Momma C.” Liam smiled.

David was about to say something, but Avery and Ashe came bursting through the door.

“Rogue attack.” Avery said looking at me.

“Where?” I asked in full alpha mode.

“Down by the river about 5 miles from here. It’s not a lot of rogues. Maybe about twenty tops. Patrol sniffed them out and are trying their best to hold them off. They are out numbered though.”

“Let’s go.” I said standing up and shifting once I got outside.

Avery

As we got the the clearing, fighting was everywhere.

I shifted back into human form and looked around.

Sadie was nowhere to be found. And there was that one guy that was with her fighting on of our warriors.

But a certain person stood out too me. And he was hiding behind a tree.

I quickly shifted and slowly crept over to him.

He wasn’t paying attention and that’s when I pounced on him.

He let out a yelp as his back slammed on the ground.

I put my face in front of his and let out a low growl.

He turned his head and showed me his neck in submission.

What the hell….?

“Avery. Please. I didn’t come here too fight. I wanted to talk to alpha Jake.” Scott pleaded still showing me his neck.

He really wasn’t a normal rogue…

I slowly got off of him and shifted back.

“Wait. What?” I asked in shock.

He laughed slightly. “I didn’t come here too fight. I came here to tell you about Sadie’s plans.”

“Are you serious?”

Scott nodded. “I’m completely serious. I was rogue yes, but I didn’t want to be like this. My pack was killed off a couple of years ago, and Sadie found me about two weeks ago. She told me she could offer me protection like she did with a bunch of other rogues as long as I listened to her. So of course I said yes. But then I found out she was planning to attack her own pack. I don’t know why. I would do many thing to be in a pack again. But being a rogue kinda ruins that chance. And wen I refused to help her, she threatened to kill me so I had no chase. I couldn’t take on her and all these rogues. Well I could probably kick her ass, but not all these rogues.”

I busted out laughing. “Oh that was great. I like you already.”

He chucked. “Thanks. I like you too.”

“So you really want to be in a pack?” I asked him.

“Yes!”

“Welcome then. Welcome to the Southern Nightshade Pack.” I smiled.

Scott looked shocked. “A-are you serious?”

I nodded. “Of course.”

“Really?! You serious?”

“Yes.” I laughed.

“Oh my gosh.” Scott smiled and pulled me into a giant hug. “Thank you thank you thank you!”

I nodded and as I turned around. I was tackled to the ground.

“Avery!” Scott shouted.

He ran over to me and shifted as he tackled the wolf off of me.

I shifted when I saw them roll on the ground and headed over to help.

They both shot up and growled at each other.

‘Avery!’ David yelled running over too me. ‘Are you okay?’

I looked up into his giant wolf eyes and nodded. ‘Ya. I’m fine.’

I saw him look at a group of warriors and they came over to us.

They all cut me off from where Scott was fighting the rogue that tackled me.

‘No!’ I shouted trying to get past them.

‘Avery. You need to stay there. There are two rogues here.’ David said lol if back at me.

‘Stop!’ I shouted.

David stopped walking and looked at me.

I ran from behind the warriors and went next to him. ‘The gray one is on our side.’

He was about to answer, but was stopped when he heard a howl in pain.

I looked over and saw Scott’s wolf on the ground with the rouge biting his shoulder and stepping on his hip.

I growled and lunged for the wolf.

I landed on his back and bit his shoulder and it was rewarded with a cry of pain.

Ha! How do you like it you little bastard!

He let go of Scott and tried to buck me off.

I held onto his fur with my teeth.

Hey look at me! I’m in a rodeo.

A warrior wolf lunged at the wolf and I jumped off so I wouldn’t be tackled by him either.

I started rolling on the ground until something stopped me.

And that’s when I looked up to meet the angry eyes of Kaydon. And he had his paw on my stomach to stop me from rolling.

Oh come on!

‘What the hell do you think you were doing taking on two full grown make rogues Avery?’

‘Funny story. You’re gonna laugh when you hear it.’

‘Oh really?’ He asked with his paw still on my stomach.

‘Well. You see. A rogue saved me, so I was trying to repay the favor.’

He stared at me for a moment and all I saw was rage. And a lot of it.

He took his paw off of me and went behind a tree to shift.

He came back with shorts on and that’s when I shifted back as well.

He just walked passed me and went over to David.

I cringed. Shit. I’m definitely going to heart it tonight.

“Alpha. The ones that didn’t get killed, escaped. He is the only one left.” Someone said.

“No!” I shouted and ran over two here Scott was. He was still in his wolf form and his shoulder was bleed terribly.

“Avery. Step away.” Jake ordered.

I crossed my arms. “No.”

“No?” He asked.

“Correct. This here is Scott and he saved my life. He is also the new member of or pack.”

Everyone was extremely quiet.

“Excuse me?!” Jake yelled.

“You heard me. He isn’t your typical rogue Jake. Just hear him out. And he actually came here looking for a pack and wanting to tell us stuff about Sadie.” I said.

“How the hell do you know?”

“Wow. Attitude much?” I asked. And that caused him to growling loudly at me. “I have a gut feeling.”

“So?” Jake snapped.

“Sooo.” I trailed. “I had a gut feeling about Ashe.” I said pointing to her Ashe she stood next to David. “And she ended up being David’s mate.”

“She’s got a point there bro.” David said wrapping his arm around Ashe as she smiled at him.

Jake sighed and pinched the bride of his nose. “Fine. I’m gonna trust you on this. But he better start talking once we get to the damn pack house. And you and I are not done discussing this fighting. We will talk about it tonight.”

“We will talk about it tonight.” I said mocking his voice.

He gave me a warning growl and I smirked at him. It was so much fun getting under his skin.

“Are you guys alright?” Stacy asked us as she walked into the living room as we just got inside the pack house. “Oh.” She said surprised. “Uh. Who is this?”

“I’m Scott.” Scott said smiling.

“Not to be rude. But uh why is there a rogue in here?”

“Told ya.” Jake said scowling at me.

I flipped him off and turned back to Stacy who was trying so hard not to laugh.

“He saved my life and he also has information about Sadie.” I said.

“He does now?” John asked standing up.

I nodded.

“How old are you?” Liam asked.

“I’m 41.” He said.

Wow. My mom is 40.

“Avery?” My mom asked coming into the room and let out a sigh of relief when she saw me. “Thank the Lord you are okay.”

“Mate!” Scott growled from beside me.

“Wait what?” My mom asked with wide eyes.
