Soraya’s POV

I rushed back into the den to give dad a bottle of of coconut water. “Daddy you have to try and take a few sips of this okay. Are you sure you don’t want to head upstairs to take a nap?” I asked him.

“No, I want to lay here on this recliner. If I feel like throwing up, the guest toilet is not far. Sweetheart I will be fine.” He looked so tired.

I opened up the windows to the den to let some fresh air in. Mom came in with Kai behind her.

“Is grandpa okay?” Kai looked worried.

“I’m okay champ, I just need a little nap and I will be as good as new.” He smiled but I could tell it took him some effort to talk.

The door bell rang and we all turned to look at the door, Kai took off running in that direction “I’ll get it.” He called out. Mom went after him, shaking her head.

“Kai, you can’t just be opening the door for anyone.” I heard her say. Then he came running back into the den.

“Who’s at the door?” I asked him. He shrugged his little shoulders.

“I don’t know, some mister. He sounds a little funny.” He said nonchalantly. “Grandpa can we play with my robotics game when you wake up from your nap?”

“Okay champ, you will show me how it works.” He said tiredly.

Kai jumped up and down in excitement then he took off in the direction of the patio.

“Raya honey there’s someone for you at the door.” My mom came in with a confused look on her face.

“Mom, what is it? Who’s at the door?” I frowned.

“There’s a gentleman, he says his name is Xander.” As she said this I felt like the ground was spinning, I held on to the side of the recliner to steady myself. “Raya he looks like Kai.” She continued. “Is he who I think he is?” She looked so shocked.

“Mom, I…uhmm. He followed me here.” I stammered as I tried to make sense of what my mother had just said.

“Is he…?” Before she finished her sentence, I nodded my head and my hand automatically went to cover my mouth. Then it hit me, he must have seen Kai because he had opened the door.

“Mom please keep Kai by the patio while I deal with this. Do not let him come out.” I said as I walked in the direction of the front door.

I opened it and there he was, just standing there. He looked at me and his hand automatically went up to rake his hair then he smiled at me like we were old friends. Something in me bubbled over and I just saw red.

“What, are you stalking me now?! What do you want?!” I pushed him backwards as I said this. “You followed me home from the gas station.” I yelled at him. He stopped smiling and frowned at me.

“I had to see you.” He said to me

“You had to see me?? For what reason? What is wrong with you?” I was seething mad as I pushed him backwards again but this time he held on to my hands. A shot of electricity zoomed through me, I stood frozen like that as I glared at him. My heart was beating fast though.

“Stop it! We need to talk.” He said as he gritted his teeth and pulled me towards the direction of the street.

“Leave me alone, Xander stop!” I tried to tug my hands free, I managed to get one loose but he kept on holding on to the other one and he kept leading me towards his car. It was parked a few houses down from my home.

“You have a lot of explaining to do.” He said, he sounded angry, his accent coming of even heavier. Only he could go from a happy emotion to seething anger in a matter of minutes. I tugged really hard and managed to get my hand free.

“I’m not going anywhere with you!” I snapped and pointed at him. “Who do you think you are coming to my home and making demands!”

“Who was that little boy I saw just now?” He gritted is teeth. His expression looked dangerous.

“That is none of your business! Leave now!” I was just as angry but now I tried really hard not to panic. My heart was racing.

“Angel! Who is he?! You better not lie to me.” He was almost yelling.

“Don’t you dare call me that! Xander leave! I don’t know what Stacy told you but you better leave and don’t come back!”

Stacy? She knows about him? I want to see him. Go and get him.”

The argument was chaotic, it was just back and forth. Him demanding to see Kai and me telling him to leave.

“Please just go! It was just a one night stand, remember? We don’t need you! He doesn’t need you!” I said quietly. I felt like I was fighting a losing battle. Tears started running down my face.

His expression changed from a murderous look to sadness. “But how? We used protection, unless you…” he said, raising his eyebrows questioningly. Then all of a sudden his expression went dark…back to anger. “Did you…? Were you planning to trap me? Damn it answer me Soraya!”

I went cold, it felt like he had just struck me. How could he think that? He thought I was capable of doing something like that. I wiped the tears from my face, I couldn’t believe that I was crying in front of him. I could not present myself as weak in front of Xander. That young naive Soraya that he knew was gone.

“Why would I hide him from you all these years if I wanted to trap you. I wracked my brain for the longest time wondering how I fell pregnant when we used protection, the condom must have broken.” I hissed at him.

“But I would have noticed, so he is mine.” He said quietly. It was more of a statement than a question.

“It’s a f*****g no brainer! Even a crazy person on the street would be able to see that.” I retorted. “We were both inebriated that night.

“I want to meet him, I am not going anywhere until I meet my son. How old is he?” His expression softened.

“Xander please just go, not today.”

“I’m not going until I meet him Angel.” He kept calling me this nickname that he had given me years ago. I was about to tell him to stop when I heard Kai from behind, I turned and he was walking towards us. Why had mom let him leave the house.

“Mommy?” He looked worried. “Why are you yelling at my mommy mister, you better go or my daddy will come after you.” He said. Both Xander and I looked shocked when he said this. What daddy was he talking about…

“Your daddy?” Xander said slowly as he looked at him then he turned to look at me. “You are married? You have another man raising my son?! He said, it came out as a low growl.

“Stop yelling at her.” Kai came and stood between us. That’s when I realised how close we were standing next to each other. Xander looked at Kai as he stood there facing Xander like he wanted to fight him. Xander started to laugh.

“That’s my boy, protect what’s yours.” He said proudly. Kai looked confused as he frowned at him.

“Kai go back inside.” I said softly.

“No mommy, this bad mister will hurt you, I’m not leaving you mommy.” He proclaimed adamantly as he sneered at Xander.

Xander’s POV

“He is a Adamos through and through.” I said, beaming with pride. He had my eyes and nose, his hair curly like mine except his was a honey brown. I didn’t know how old he was but he had a tall stature. He looked like he meant business as he stood there sneering at me ready to protect his mother. I knelt down to his level.

“So your name is Kai huh?” I asked him.

“I’m not allowed to talk to you, you’re a stranger” he said still frowning at me.

“I’m not a stranger Kai.” I smiled at him.

“Why do you sound funny when you talk.” He asked innocently.

“Because I am Greek, we speak a different language where I am from.” I felt so much pride just looking at his curious face.

I looked up at Soraya, she had a look of concern on her face. She just stood there watching us. “I wasn’t yelling at your mother, we were talking about you.” I informed him. “My name is Xander.”

“That’s the last part of my second name.” He raised his brows with curiosity. I was also very curious, what did he mean…

He looked up at Soraya as if he was looking for confirmation on whether he should carry on talking to me.

“Honey, there’s something I have to tell you okay.” She said to him as she gently pulled him closer to her, holding his shoulders. “Remember when you asked me about your dad?” She said and he nodded.

So he knew that his stepfather wasn’t his real father. That gave me some sort of relief. Who ever this man was, he probably wasn’t doing a good job for a kid to ask for his real father. My angel was married? Maybe this was why I couldn’t replace her, surname change. But why was she not wearing a wedding band.

“Well honey remember you asked if he lived here in Phoenix?” She continued. “This man here is your father.” She looked at me as she said this.

“I don’t want him to be.” Kai said and he started to tear up. That confused me. It felt like I’d just been kicked on my shin. Why would he say that.

“Why not honey?” She asked him.

“Because he was being mean to you, I don’t want a mean daddy.” He started to cry. She pulled him into a hug.

“Kai, it’s okay. Sometimes grownups have a disagreement. I’m fine I promise.” He held on to her, his arms going around her neck. She stood up with him still holding on. Her arms went around his body and she massaged his back.

“Baby it’s okay, mommy is fine I promise.” She soothed him softly. She was so good with him. I had missed out on so much. I wanted to hug both of them and never let go. She looked at me and sneered at me, clearly she didn’t feel the same way.

He calmed down and turned to look at me. His tears stained face regarded me with a frown.

I had to get him to like me somehow. What did kids like? “How about I take both of you out for ice cream?” I said trying to get a smile out of him.

“Kai has had enough excitement for today, give him a chance to process this.” We can set up a meeting for another time.” Soraya pointed out and I could not hide the disappointment on my face.

“Fine but I want your number. I will call and set up a meeting.” I took out my phone and handed it to her so she could type in her number. “And God help me Angel if you run off I will hunt you down and make you regret it.” I threatened her.

I took the phone back. “Kai, we will talk some other time.” I said to him but he hid his face in his mother’s hair, completely ignoring me. I sighed. “I will call you soon.” I said to her and walked to my car. I watched her walk back in the direction of the house then I drove off.
