It was silent and everyone looked stunned. The room was quiet enough to hear a pin drop until finally, my brother spoke up.

“You knew you were mated to my sister… But you slept with that she wolf last night?”

Rose gasped, her hands flying over her mouth as she looked at me with pity. I looked away. I didn’t want her pity. I wanted to leave, and never see him again.

“Yes,” was all Rider said.

I sneered at him with disgust before pushing him roughly. He took a step back, surprise on his face. I put my face close to his, or as close as I could get with him bring a foot taller than me.

“Don’t ever speak to me again. Don’t look at me. Don’t even breath in my direction. You are disgusting and I hate you!” I told him, feeling nothing but anger.

He seemed to freeze. I looked at my pack, seeing how all of them were quiet, some shocked, hurt or angry. I didn’t care. Not anymore. I ran upstairs and started packing.

….

“C’mon, Vera, unlock the door!” Rose cried angrily, pounding against the wood.

I didn’t say anything, but continued to pack.

“Ver, I swear I’ll break down the door,” Rose warned.

I rolled my eyes. She wouldn’t do anything. Rose has always been all bark no bite. Finally, the pounding stopped and Rise went silent. I thought she had walked away for a minute but then I heard her voice.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Ver? That you felt like that. That Rider was your mate? Why didn’t you come to me? I thought we were best friends…” She trailed off, her voice hurt.

I felt myself soften. I went over to the door and opened it, pulling her in quickly before shutting and locking it again. She pulled me into a hug instantly.

“Vera!” She cried into my shoulder.

I hugged her back tightly, but I didn’t cry. I was tired of the tears. All I had done lately was cry and pity myself for my situation. I couldn’t even be sad when I was numb. After a moment I pulled away.

“I’m sorry Rose, but I didn’t want to be that person. The envious, mean girl that envied everyone, hated everyone. I tried to ignore it, but I just, don’t belong here. I thought maybe I did when I found out Rider was my mate, but Rose…. He hates me. He cheated on me within the first 24 hours of knowing,” I said with a heavy sigh.

“Oh, Vera, there’s no way someone could hate their mate! He’s a jerk, a cold-heartless jerk but he’s going to regret this. His wolf will never let this go. He’s just sitting in the back yard on the lawn furniture, and if anyone approaches him he threatens to attack. His wolf is in shock. He might be really hurt if he doesn’t snap out of it soon,” Rose stated, putting a putting hand on my shoulder.

I shrugged it off.

“I don’t care. I hate him, Rose. I never did anything to him, but he was disgusted to have me as a mate, just cuz I was human.”

Rose nodded and dropped the subject, instead helped me pack.

“Where are you going to go?”

“Probably California. I’ve always wanted to go to the beach and it’s supposed to be sunny all year round!”

She smiled at my excitement.

“It sounds great, Ver,” suddenly she started tearing up. “I’m going to miss you so much though.”

“I’ll miss you too, Rose,” I stated, hugging her.

Suddenly, there was a scratching at my door. I walked over curiously and opened it the tiniest amount. An unfamiliar wolf stood there, belly low to the ground and ears pressed back in submission. I looked at it curiously before squatting down. It was massive, and I had never seen a wolf act like this before. I wondered briefly if it had been hurt.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” I asked.

It whined before darting past me into my room.

“Wait! You can’t go in there!” I cried out, closing my door and rushing in after it.

The wolf paused in the middle of my floor, then just dropped. I gasped, slightly concerned but saw the wolf was lying there, it’s tongue lolling out of it’s mouth.

“What the heck…?” I trailed on, confused.

I went to sit beside the wolf, examining it closely. It had dark brown, almost black hair and golden eyes. It had white feet and and a small white mark on the back of it’s neck. He was big though, bigger than any wolf I’d ever seen. I checked it’s gender subtly. Guy.

“Who are you?” I wondered aloud.

The wolf whined and nudged my hand with his big head. I laughed and petted him, wondering why he was acting so at home around me. I’m not a wolf, he should be more on edge around me. I looked over at Rose who had an odd look on her face..

“What?” I asked suspiciously.

She shook her head and fled from my room, claiming to have unfinished business to attend to. I looked down at the wolf.

“Looks like it’s just me and you, buddy.” The wolf seemed to smile happily.

We messed around, goofing off in my room. He’d chase me across my room till he gently nudged me or tackled me, then I’d have to tag him. It was odd seeing a whole act more like an obedient puppy. Most of the time, they’d avoid me or sometimes growl. I didn’t have a mind link, so I seemed strange to them.

That was fun. A voice said in my head.

I jolted, looking around, frightened.

It’s ok. It’s just me. It said again.

I looked around and then realized the wolf was staring at me patiently.

“Are you speaking in my head?” I asked him.

Yes.

“Oh my god!” I yelped, scrambling up.

The wolf looked at me alarmed, before grabbing my sleeve with it’s teeth and gently tugging me back down.

It’s ok. This is natural. It’s just our bond getting stronger.

“Bond?” I asked, confused.

Yes, I’m Rider’s wolf, your mate.

I felt sick to my stomach.

“No. I don’t want anything to do with Rider. He cheated on me! He made me feel disgusting, like a little bug,” I told the wolf angrily.

He whined pitifully, looking at me with big, sad puppy eyes.

I’m sorry, beautiful. Rider can be very short minded sometimes, but he’s human. He makes mistakes. Please, forgive us. I don’t want to lose you. He begged sadly.

I sighed.

“Could you please change back?”

The wolf nodded his head before darting off into my bathroom. A few minutes later, a very very naked Rider appeared. I let out a strangled noise.

“Oh my god! What the heck, you’re naked!” I squeaked, covering my eyes.

I heard a chuckle and footsteps approached me. Hands gently pried my arms away from my face.

“This body is yours, my love. As yours is mine,” he spoke in a sweet, alluring voice.

I looked into his eyes. Golden. His wolf was still in control.

“I’m not really comfortable with seeing that though,” I said, my tone high pitched and panicked.

He laughed, but covered himself with my blanket. I gulped. I’ll have to wash that.

“Like I was saying, Vera, I’m sorry for Rider. He’s not a bad person, he just has problems he needs to resolve. His mother was human, and died giving birth to him. His father was always cruel to him, and blamed him for his mother’s death. He resents humans, because he sees them as weak. He thinks humans and werewolves should stay with their own kind, to avoid pain and suffering, but I disagree. I know your strong, and I know that your place is with me,” he said, nuzzling my neck.

I was so lost in thought by his confession that I didn’t push him away. Rider’s mother was human?

“You smell so good. Like a field of flowers,” he g*****d.

I shook my head in embarrassment and pushed him away.

“When will Rider be back in control?”

“Whenever you wish, beautiful.”

I sighed, resigned.

Once he is, I know I will be upset. Rider is such an annoying jerk. But that’s who he is.

“You should probably let him. It’s not good for him to be buried in his own mind for too long.”

Rider’s wolf nodded, then after a moment, the gold eyes blinked back to grey. We say in awkward silence before I finally got up and resumed packing. Rider slowly rose and walked out my door.
