Chapter 2 This Daughter-In-Law Is Too Ugly
The large black-rimmed glasses covered half of Rebecca’s face. She had also made her skin look sunburned, and there were spots all over her skin.
She wore a gaudy floral top paired with loose, black bell-bottom pants. She looked like a country bumpkin through and through.
If Jacob didn’t recognize the driver from the Chambers Family, he might think that some beggar was knocking on the wrong door.
Despite everything, it was an engagement arranged by the old master. Even though Jacob earnestly regarded this woman with disdain, he still put on a front.
“Come with me to meet the young master, Miss.”
As Jacob led Rebecca further in, she took the chance to study her surroundings.
She realized that the compound was unusually huge. The facade was unassuming, but every brick and tile was expensive.
When they arrived at the main hall, Jacob stopped in his tracks and turned around.
“Allow me to bring you up to speed on the young master’s condition. He got into an accident half a year ago, and the lower half of his body has been left paralyzed. He’s completely numb, so I hope you can take good care of him. Also, he doesn’t have a good temper, so you’d better not provoke him. Otherwise, not even the old master can save you. Also—”
“Are you done? If so, just tell me which room he’s in.”
Rebecca interrupted Jacob coldly. She didn’t like to listen to people nagging, perhaps because she’d been used to being decisive in everything she usually did.
Jacob was stunned as he stared at Rebecca in shock. Rebecca gave him another look, and Jacob was surprised to replace himself intimidated.
Why does a country bumpkin like her have such a piercing gaze?
Her gaze was calm, but Jacob could somehow sense murderous intent in it.
When he recovered his senses, he remembered his identity and coughed lightly.
“I’m the butler of this house. When the old master is not around, I’ll be the one managing things around here. If you need anything, feel free to ask.”
In other words, Jacob was saying that he held the most power here next to the old master of the Foley Family, so Rebecca should mind her manners when she talked to him.
However, Rebecca would have none of it. “Just tell me which room it is. I can go in myself.”
Jacob never expected this woman to not play by the rules. She was dressed up in such an old-fashioned way that he could tell she was on an entirely different level from the Foleys.
However, she spoke with unbelievable arrogance. Her eyes were clear and pure, yet there was an indomitable aura emanating from her.
Jacob could only lower his head as he led Rebecca upstairs. When he opened the door, the smell of disinfectant wafted out. The room was dark, and despite the sunny weather outside, it was cold and gloomy in the room. One couldn’t help but shiver at the atmosphere.
Rebecca angled her head and asked Jacob, “Why didn’t you pull back the curtains and open the windows? Breathing in the fresh air will help the patient recover.”
Jacob recoiled and coughed violently. Why was this woman so bold?
How dare she tell him what to do when the young master was still there?
“The young master doesn’t like sunlight, and he has ordered us to keep the curtains drawn every day. You’re new here, and there are many things you don’t understand, so you should stop intervening in everything.”
After all, she was just a country bumpkin. What did she know?
Rebecca never heard of illnesses getting cured by staying out of the sunlight. She heard that the old master, Maurice Foley, visited many hospitals because of this, and he even asked independent doctors for help.
It was apparent that Maurice wanted Levi Foley to stand up as soon as possible.
However, the Foleys were lucky to have encountered her. She learned medicine from her mentor when she was younger, and she had mastered the art of acupuncture. She could give him a try.
Still, she would have to examine him first to determine her next steps.
However, her grandmother told her that she needed to keep a low profile no matter where she went, and she was advised not to reveal her capabilities too easily.
Rebecca tilted her head and said to Jacob, “Please leave us alone for a moment, Mr. Tanner. I want to have a word with my husband.”
“Your husb—” Jacob looked like he had just seen a ghost. Were all women from the countryside so bold these days?
She hadn’t even met Levi, but she was already referring to him as her husband.
Seeing that Jacob was still standing where he was, unmoving, Rebecca teased him on purpose and asked, “What’s the matter, Mr. Tanner? Would you like to stay behind and watch the show instead?”
