Evelyn’s POV

My eyes open not recognising the ceiling above me. Where was I? I remember falling down the stairs…correction, being pulled down the stairs by Vicky.

Where was Reuben, why wasn’t he here? I see Noah standing at the foot of my bed tapping away on his laptop.

“Noah, where is Reuben?” I ask looking around the room and even try to look outside, to see whether he was talking to a pack member only just outside my room, but still close enough to be here for me when I woke up.

“I’m sure he will be here soon.”

My heart sinks at the news…be here soon? Had he not even checked on met yet? He wanted to be with her, the female that put our baby’s life in danger, to steal my husband.

“Has he visited at all?” I check but already know the answer.

“No not yet….” Noah calmly replies, trying to soothe my internal crisis.

The hospital room bangs open, Reuben’s apparent anger preventing him from catching the door before it bounces off the wall. The room takes on a heavy atmosphere on his arrival, his dark aura swirling around as a threatening reminder of who is in charge here.

“You’re awake. Any damage?” He stalks towards my bed like a predator ready to inflict pain on its prey.

“Some bruising….” Noah starts to list my slight injuries but is rudely cut off by Reuben.

“She looks fine to me. Vicky on the other hand is still in a lot of pain.” He coldly says to me with narrowed eyes.

“Why did you do it Evelyn? Vicky has told me everything.”

“What has she told you?” I look to him completely bewildered at his continued protection of her. I was in this hospital because of her.

“Vicky told me how you flew into a jealous rage about her previously living with me, that we used to be together. How she tried to calm you down, to reassure you but you just saw red. She wanted to leave you alone, to let you calm down but you followed her to the top of the stairs and pushed her down, and she reached for you to stop her fall. Thank Goddess she wasn’t more seriously injured Evelyn…a luna isn’t above my pack laws!”

His belief in Vicky’s turn of events was sickening, how could he think I would willingly hurt someone in such a malicious and calculated way.

“So, you think I pushed Vicky down the stairs?”

“I think in the heat of the moment jealously got the better of you. I don’t believe you truly meant for it to happen…but trust me when I say, it won’t happen again!” His tone to me was even colder than before, almost laced with distain.

I can’t keep back the tears forming in my eyes, I feel like they aren’t only mine but also those of my unborn child.

“You believe Vicky over your own wife?” Noah calmly asks of Reuben.

“You think Evelyn would purposely put her own baby in danger?”

“What?” Reuben gasps at Noah’s revelation.

“You’re pregnant?” Reuben takes a few steps closer to me and reaches for my hand, but I purposely dodge it. His own revelations continuing to break my heart.

“It doesn’t matter anymore…”

“What do you mean?” Reuben looks to me before turning his gaze on Noah.

I close my eyes so that he can’t see my mind-link to Noah, who does the same when I push on the link.

“You will tell him I have lost the baby!” I order at him.

“Evelyn…” Noah tries to argue with me.

“Do it!” I order more firmly through our mind-link.

“Evelyn…?” I open my eyes to replace Reuben staring at me, panic in his eyes.

“The baby didn’t survive the fall…” Noah informs Reuben as tears of hurt and guilt gush like a waterfall from my eyes.

I’ve never seen an Alpha King lose control. His anger erupts turning the room thick with a suffocating smog like aura that I replace hard to breathe through. With a giant roar he starts to tear the room apart as he throws the chair through the window, smashes the medicine cabinet and launches the monitor onto the floor…before turning his anger back on me.

“Why weren’t you more careful? If you hadn’t of been jealous of Vicky none of this would have happened. She just needed a place to stay until I found her a new pack…why couldn’t you see that, why couldn’t you just like her? If you hadn’t of been so stupid the baby would be alive…”

Noah had heard enough, his beta status taking over his doctor title. He grabs the Alpha by the throat and pushes him up against the wall, flashing his descending teeth in a warning.

“Noah…” I scream climbing out of the bed. I throw Noah off him and turn to Reuben wanting him gone.

“You need to leave. I want you gone! Go to Vicky, you clearly love her. You don’t need me anymore…just go.” I growl letting my own anger get the better of me.

“Tell him about the baby.” Noah orders at me through the mind-link.

Reuben watches as I cut mine and Noah’s mind-link. I turn my back on him, if I said anything else I would regret it later. As I climb back into bed, I hear Reuben murmur about me resting and that he would check back on me later, as he leaves the room.

“Why didn’t you tell him the truth?” Noah whispers to me once Reuben was out of ear shot.

“Which truth Noah….” More uncontrollable tears burn at my eyes.

“…he believes her anyway, he’ll never believe me.”

…..

Noah checked me out of hospital the following day as long as I took bed rest at the alpha mansion.

I didn’t leave my room. Vicky was also out of hospital and I could hear her ordering the staff around downstairs, eating with Reuben at every meal time, no doubt in my seat, and giggling when she could, most likely for my benefit. I didn’t want to be around her toxic character or him.

Candice and Michelle took it in turns to bring me food into my room and check in on me regularly. I couldn’t eat, my breaking heart taking away any want for food. Noah also visited me every day watching me drink the vitamin fluid and making sure I ate at least a slice of toast in his presence.

“Evelyn, you need to eat.” He whispers at me as Candice was in my dressing room putting away freshly laundered clothes. After Noah leaves, Candice walks back into my main room and sits on the edge of the bed.

“You need to come down Luna, Vicky is always with the Alpha…you need to fight for him.” Her words were meant for encouragement, but they just result in a sob leaving my lips. I secretly hug my tummy tighter, protecting my baby from any more pain.

….

I was still keeping to my room and had finished my lunch when Candice broke through my bedroom door with her face drained of all colour.

“Candice?”

“Luna, Alpha and Doctor Noah are fighting in the courtyard. You need to come quick.” She hurries me out of the bed and down the stairs. As I run into the courtyard I replace Noah on the ground, a swollen eye and bleeding at the corner of his mouth.

I rush to Noah and turn to see Reuben readying for another punch, Vicky standing by him like a vile viper hissing evilness into his ear.

“He’s bleeding!” I growl at my husband who has assaulted a member of my family pack.

“You slut, who knows what you two have been doing behind my back?” He spits out at me. By now we have gathered a crowd, the staff and some pack members watching in shock at their alpha’s uncharacteristic behaviour. Stern and powerful, yes. Cold and ruthless to me, never.

Noah can’t help himself, he wants to protect me in any way that he can, even from vicious verbal attacks. He stands up and launches himself at Reuben, but I grab him and pull him back just in time. Reuben shifts mid-way through Noah’s attack, his wolf aiming to bite at his neck. Aiming for the kill.

Protectively I shield Noah from the angry alpha wolf in front of me by blocking my own body in front of his.

“What do you mean?” I demand from Reuben as he shifts back in to skin form. Vicky taking the opportunity to eye up my husband’s impressive body.

He goes to turn his back on me before snorting and unmercifully accuses me of adultery.

“Isn’t it obvious? Noah is the only one who knew you were pregnant. Perhaps Vicky was right, perhaps that baby in your womb wasn’t….” He cuts off, even the word, mine, too painful for him to say out loud.

I scream out at him, fisting my own hair in my hands and pulling at his relentlessly.

“Vicky…She says jump, you say how high! We’ve had no problems for two years until she has come back…why can’t you see how evil she is.” I shout at him.

Noah tries to step in front of me, trying to challenge the Alpha King again. But my husband just scoffs at my doctor’s attempts.

“Noah, your services are no longer required.” Reuben commands with his alpha aura.

I can’t believe what I am hearing, Reuben wants to banish the only ally I have here, my only friend. Rage starts to boil within my belly.

“If you are banishing Noah, then you’ll have to banish me too!” I calmly state, my voice holding a strength I never knew I had.

Reuben looks at me with his eyes turning back to the deep stormy ocean blue.

“What did you just say?”
