Evelyn POV

Night time was starting to kick in on what was an eventful day. My warriors. were watching the rogue like a hawk. I also had some of Pierce’s warriors watching him in the house next door on screen via the hidden cameras.

According to reports, he wasn’t doing a lot. I couldn’t go near him, Pierce knew this and was doing his best to keep my occupied. Keep my wolf calm.

But really I wanted Reuben, only he would give my wolf the inner peace that she required right now. The man that killed her parents was on our pack lands and sleeping on one of our pack’s beds. It didn’t sit well with her or me.

We’d had rogues before where they innocently stumbled across our pack and needed help. After a meal and fresh clothing we drove them off site to help them on their journey.

I’d had this feeling before, this feeling of foreboding…like something bad was going to come. But it passed after a few hours, so why was I still feeling it? This rogue had been with us for most part of the day now and I couldn’t shake this feeling. Was it because I knew of his crimes against this pack?

Noah was still at the hospital with Cassandra, they had been there all day making sure Beatrice was recovering well. She had a lucky escape, falling down the stairs whilst pregnant, even as a werewolf, is incredibly dangerous. Donnie hadn’t left her side once, which meant Harry would be sleeping the night at ours.

Rex now had his own room and I had put an extra bed in there for Harry. It had yet to be decorated to Rex’s tastes, but for now, he had his own space which he started to need.

Although, Elspeth did kick off for not having Harry in her room, I think she assumed he’d be with her. Nope, absolutely not happening!

The children were asleep and it would be a good idea for me to get some sleep, but I couldn’t. Something in me didn’t want to sleep. Didn’t want me to close my eyes.

I’ve never done this before, but I’m currently standing out at the front door …looking out on to the pack grounds in the distance. That feeling of foreboding hadn’t left me yet…

“You’ve not rested all day…here!” Pierce comes up from behind me, placing a glass of wine into my hand.

“What are you looking at?” He watches me as I slowly sip on the wine. It was cool against my throat, the sweet floral notes only adding to its delicious taste. Did I buy this? Where in the house did he replace it?

“I can’t seem to settle, I feel restless.” I quietly say, not once taking my eyes off the still scene in front of me.

“You’ve got a rogue on your lands. It’s natural for an alpha to feel uneasy.”

“Yes, I’ve had rogues on pack grounds before but the feeling passes after a few hours. But this time it doesn’t seem to be letting up.”

“Sleep..that’s the best medicine. I can stay up and keep an eye on things if that helps you feel more at ease?” He sweetly offers.

“That’s very kind but really unnecessary. You’re a guest, even if unexpected…” I nudge his shoulder to show him I was the one teasing now.

“…I couldn’t expect that from you. I think the events of today have all added up and I’m worried about Beatrice.” I take another sip of my wine when I feel it.

That feeling, as if someone is stepping over your grave. I close my eyes, letting the sensation take me. Letting my wolf feel the changes that are trying to send warning signal to me.

I can feel it, a foot stepping over and into our border. “Shit, Miss Smith…lock the house. Shutters down!” I scream my command at Miss Smith who I have drilled into her on numerous occasions what the procedure is to keep the children safe.

As I hear the shutters starting to drop I throw my wine glass to the ground and run into the direction of the trespasser. The trespasser that I’ve been feeling nearby all damn afternoon.

“Evelyn?” Pierce is running next to me. “Trespasser…more than one.” I respond back to him before raising the alarm to my warriors and pack members.

“Intruders. I want all warriors at border location five. Be prepared to fight. Everybody else shutters down!” I command through the pack link.

I had learnt my lesson of four years ago. Every house that was rebuilt was done so with shutters. Those that remained untouched had the shutters added in. I wouldn’t risk my pack members safety again.

“Evelyn?” Noah pushes on my mind- link.

“Noah, keep Cassandra at the hospital. Tell her to prepare for casualties. I need you…”

“I’m on my way, wait for me. Are you alone?”

“Pierce is with me.” I reply as I can see Pierce’s warriors running in our direction. “The children?” Noah’s concerned voice shakes slightly through the mind- link.

“They are in the alpha home, shutters down. Harry with them too.”

Hopefully they will still be asleep and not be aware of what was happening.

I keep running. Outrunning any pack member or warrior that was making their way to the area. As I gained distance on border location five the sensation that had been so strong moments before was starting to deplete. Were they already backing off our grounds?

Pierce and I were the first to arrive with our warriors closely behind. As we reach the area, I place my hand up to gesture a stop. They were no longer on our grounds but they managed to leave their scent. It was overwhelming. Too much for the senses. Even some of the warriors were holding their noses.

Noah takes my right, arriving directly from the hospital, with Pierce positioning himself on my left. I take a step forward when Pierce grabs my arm and pulls me back.

“Remove your hand!” I growl at him, my wolf not liking him preventing us from investigating further. “Reuben wouldn’t like you getting any closer!” He sternly states in a quiet tone.

“Reuben isn’t here right now and I don’t answer to him!” I shove his arm off me and take a step closer to the border line.

I search the growing darkness ahead of me and can make out not one, but quite a few silhouettes. Shadows watching us from afar.

“Do you want us to shift?” Noah takes a step closer like me and prepares to shift but I swing my arm out, stopping him from going any further.

“No, listen…there’s more than a few.” I lend on my wolf’s hearing to listen to any signs of their total. number.

I could start to make out the bodies of angry wolves snarling. Who are they and what are they doing here?

“What do you want?” I roar out into the distance, making it very clear I am the most powerful being here. I was in charge and that they had better be ready to submit to me.

They don’t answer, except one that takes a step forward. It’s still dark but I could sense the ill intent radiating off this wolf.

“Just you!” I can just make out as he points a single finger towards me with an evil grin on his face.

“The bitch alpha is mine!” He growls to the figures behind him before he breaks out into a rage induced run, snapping his teeth viciously at me.
