The Mirrorverse
Chapter 84

Ka

The Ka’s felt somehow less than human while they were united. Emotions passed over them, somehow not touching them.

They watched at a distance until Ellie prompted them to separate, there being no reason to be together any more.

It hit Ka like a truck full of dumbbells once the buffered safety of their union evaporated.

They held up a façade, grinning at Viskra as if nothing was wrong, but in reality they felt like they had been hit with a truck load full of emotional baggage that they couldn’t handle all in one go.

The Ka’s knew they were still thinking as one, when Ka’s thoughts shifted to Maya they signalled the termination of their common thoughts as Ke deliberately changed his thought pattern by engaging Viskra in conversation.

Everyone was laughing, and the Ka’s went through the motions, back in tune with each other again. It was a good job they could act, it saved many awkward questions.

Since Ka and Ke had shared their memories, Ka pitied the loneliness and depression Ke had suffered in the absence of Maya. Ka knew how much he needed her, and was going to win her back at any cost.

Ka stepped forward and put his hands on Maya’s shoulders, before tilting her chin up towards him, and poured all the pain, suffering and love he had into kissing her.

Epilogue

Sat around a large table in a beautiful house by the sea, are a group of old friends. Syrhahn sits at the head of the table, as it is his house. April, who calls him ‘dad’ so the locals don’t realise something is amiss, sits to his right, finally having found a father of her own.

Viskra and Ellie are home from a very advanced university where they are studying engineering and music, respectively. April and Maya provide their carriage between the universes. Viskra recently proposed to Ellie, and she accepted.

Ke sits to Ellie’s left, suntanned and at ease. He has been hitching rides around the multiverse from folk he replaces in the astral plane. He is famous there, as are all the friends, for their actions which saved the multiverse. He has yet to replace a partner, but is happy in his own skin for the moment.

Xhisara is sat at the opposite end of the table, facing the son in law she might never have known. She looks adoringly at her grandson, whose attention is focused only on his fiancé.

Ka’s hand rests over Maya’s swollen belly, which houses his baby, aged seven months. Neither know of the baby that was lost when Maya’s original body was killed. They exchange glances and are happier than they have ever been, now knowing what they have to lose.

The friends and family raise their glasses to absent friends, to those they lost in the fight for freedom and love. They toast to Les and Rob, their friends forever absent. They understand why Les took his own life and they hope that wherever he is now, he is content with Rob.

Spectral Maya joins them just for a moment, and the friends raise their glasses to her for the risks she took to save them. They toast her for risking elimination for interfering in lemna disputes, and therefore upsetting the balance of the multiverse, as the Spectrals saw it.

Spectral Maya has finally found her peace. Like the other Spectrals, she is happy on a different plateau to that the lemna’s understand.

It’s fair to say that nobody’s lives returned to how they had been, but were enhanced by their experiences and new found gifts. They laugh and joke, and look forward to the future that they had to go to war to protect.
