The Sweet Pursuit by Golden Autumn -
Chapter 3
The man said in a cold tone, "Why are you following me? Are you a student of River University?"
On George's way over here, he noticed this woman following him. As soon as he stopped, she pretended to stop as well. Just like this, she followed him all the way to the elevator.
Suzy blushed slightly and quickly recollected herself. Her tone was calm as she replied, "Does this route belong to you or something? Everyone can walk on these roads, so why are you saying that I'm following you?" A cold glint flashed through the man's dark eyes. He took a step back and motioned for Suzy to go ahead of him.
Suzy smiled mockingly. "Forget it. I don't want you to misunderstand either."
After saying this, she turned and walked toward the stairs.
The elevator doors slowly closed behind her, blocking the man's slightly narrowed dark eyes.
Suzy was afraid of bumping into George again, so she chose to climb the stairs to the ninth floor.
When they got to the conference room, the counselor was talking with the dean of the Economics and Management Department. When the counselor noticed Suzy, she hinted at Suzy to tell her to wait a moment. There were a few students next to her who also came to hand in the materials, and one of them looked at Suzy with a sinister look as if harboring bad intentions.
Suzy pretended not to see it, took out her phone, and played Sudoku for a while.
The game was over in less than five minutes. Just then, she could hear the sounds of footsteps approaching.
"You must've been back for quite some time. After going abroad for so long, it was about time for you to come back!"
Following the chancellor's voice, two people walked into the conference room. One was Chancellor Fowell, while the other was...
Suzy could not help but frown. Was there truly such a coincidence?
George noticed Suzy as well, and his eyes swept across her body without stopping.
The dean hurried up to greet the chancellor.
Then, Chancellor Fowell introduced George to the rest, "This is the president of Laine Corp. He was also a student at our school before this. By the way, several scholarships in our school are sponsored by Mr. Laine."
The dean's expression immediately became more reverent. He shook hands with George and said with a smile, "It just so happens that the students came over to hand in the scholarship application materials today. You see, Mr. Laine, all of these students have won your scholarship."
George glanced over, but this time, he seemed to take a second glance at Suzy. He said with a light smile, "River U has always produced many talents!"
Suzy looked at the man's handsome profile and thought of something. Others had mentioned that George Laine was a playboy. He was indeed domineering last night and filled with aggression. Yet now, the man appeared dignified and gentle like the man she saw on TV.
Which side of him was his true nature?
After suddenly being mentioned by the dean, several students straightened their backs and looked at George in admiration or even shyness.
The woman who was staring at Suzy earlier came up with an idea. She took a step forward suddenly and said in a crisp voice, "Since Mr. Laine, the one who's sponsoring our scholarships, is here, there's something I'd like to share. But I don't know if it's appropriate."
The counselor frowned, wondering what kind of dumb tricks Tiffany Jones had up her sleeves.
Chancellor Fowell smiled elegantly. "Please speak up if you have something to say."
Tiffany glanced at Suzy and said, "The scholarship set up by Mr. Laine is to reward outstanding students of River U. I think a person's excellence should not only be in terms of study but also their character, right?"
"Of course!" Chancellor Fowell answered and nodded.
Tiffany took out her mobile phone and opened a thread on the school's forum for everyone to see.
"A few days ago, someone saw Suzy Shirley getting into a luxury car after school. Suzy is from an ordinary family, and I'm afraid her family can't afford such a car. I think everyone here can imagine what she went out to do. Can such a student be considered excellent?"
Everyone's expressions changed immediately except for George's. Then, the counselor whispered, "Tiffany Jones, why are you talking about such a thing in front of Mr. Laine?"
Tiffany raised her eyebrows and said, "I just want Mr. Laine to know what kind of people are receiving the scholarships he's sponsoring. That's all. I want to ask him whether or not it's appropriate."
The dean's face immediately turned dark. He took the phone over and looked at it. There were only a couple of blurry photos from the post that was published on the forum many days ago. Suzy was seen getting into a Mercedes-Benz S600 with a middle-aged man. No one could see the man's face clearly.
"Care to explain yourself, Suzy Shirley?" Tiffany looked at Suzy provocatively.
There was no expression on Suzy's delicate face. Her usually calm eyes appeared as cold as ice. "Who do you think you are and why should I explain myself to you?"
Just as Tiffany was about to speak, George suddenly spoke up with his usual indifferent sneer, "What era are we in? Why is a student from a prestigious school still resorting to these kinds of groundless accusations to frame a person's reputation?"
Tiffany gritted her teeth and defended herself. "There are photos. Mr. Laine, how can you call it a groundless accusation?"
George sneered at her. "What can you see from the photos? Now that I'm speaking up for her, are you going to say that there's something shameful going between us as well?" Suzy's eyelids twitched slightly.
Suddenly, she became glad that George had not recognized her. That was why he could say such a sentence so confidently! After George was done talking, he continued to add, "Is this the quality of an excellent student from a prestigious school?"
He accentuated the word 'excellent' as he spoke. It was obviously a sarcastic remark about Tiffany's words earlier. Tiffany was so overwhelmed by George's aura that she could barely speak.
Everyone's expressions changed, and Tiffany became embarrassed. The others did not step in, and only Suzy raised her eyebrows as she did not expect George to speak up for her. Chancellor Fowell frowned and said solemnly, "Mr. Laine is right. From just a few photos, we can't tell if there's anything going on. Such a post should not appear on River U's forum." The counselor immediately said, "I'll have someone delete the post right away."
Tiffany was unwilling to reconcile to this and wanted to add something else, but she was glared at by the counselor.
Chancellor Fowell turned to look at George and said with a gentle smile, "I think our dean, Mr. Zachary, has something to talk to the students about in the conference room. Let's go to my office instead." George nodded and said, "Sure."
"This way, please."
"After you, Chancellor Fowell."
Chancellor Fowell and George left. Then, the counselor turned to look at Tiffany and said sullenly, "You're too insensible, Tiffany Jones!"
Tiffany gritted her teeth and did not talk back. She merely glared at Suzy and turned to walk away from the conference room.
The counselor tried comforting Suzy, but Suzy did not say much and merely handed in the materials before leaving.
At the corner of the corridor, Tiffany stood there and stared coldly at Suzy.
Suzy walked over while her gaze was completely fixed on Tiffany. The moment she passed her shoulders, Suzy paused and said lightly, "If you like Yasiel Quig that much, then go after him. Using such despicable means will make you seem..." Suzy looked sideways. Her face was pure and beautiful, but she spat out the next words with a cold and suffocating aura, "...very lowly!"
Tiffany immediately straightened her body and said with a dark face, "What did you just say?"
Suzy glanced at her and walked away unhurriedly.
Tiffany was furious and stepped forward to catch up to her, but a friend of hers grabbed onto her and said, "Calm down, Tiff! This is an office building!"
Tiffany stopped and looked at Suzy's back grimly. "I'll destroy her sooner or later!"
...
There was no class in the evening. At noon, Suzy took the bus back to the villa in the middle of the mountain. While sitting in the car, she could not help but think of George again.
The first time they met, the two did the deed without even knowing each other. The second time they met, she was first regarded as a malicious stalker, then she was publicly accused of being a mistress...
Suzy pressed her forehead against the car window and raised her eyebrows slightly. He must be the bane of her existence!
After an hour, George politely declined Chancellor Fowell's invitation for dinner and left River University by car.
The driver turned his head and said, "Mr. Laine, the development meeting of Goldenwater Bay Villa area is scheduled for three o'clock in the afternoon. You may take a short rest for the time being. Where would you like to go?" George was flipping through the documents in his hand. Hearing the word 'villa', he suddenly thought of something and said softly, "Head to Green Garden Villa." "Yes, sir!" The driver turned around at the intersection.
Then, George's phone suddenly rang. After answering the call, Jessie's voice came from the other line. "Mr. Laine, the woman from last night has been found!"
