The Wannabe Warrior
Chapter 201

Madison POV

I could do little to sooth Peggy’s hurting soul or the mental hurt she was going through. To feel her mate dying with intense agony has to be hard to handle, no matter how much he betrayed her. You can’t remove years of being together in one night, and I don’t think Peggy really wanted to. I felt deep down she was still in denial, and there was little I could do about her wanting her mate and feeling her mate if she did not want to let him go. I was hoping once he was gone, that she could start to heal properly. She had only just started the road to healing. Maybe she would pass on the alpha title to her daughter earlier than planned. With the Blue River warrior, her daughter has a good start.

‘Madison.’ Gerome called me through a mind-link, his voice sounded a little upset, and I wondered what else was going on over the mic. I was surprised how much the mic could pick up, the room doors must be open for us to hear it all.

‘Yep, what is the latest news?’ I asked quietly and waited for him to tell me what he needed to pass on.

‘The screaming is still going on, and more fighting between each other.’ He started to give me his report and it was not surprising, once he told me that the screaming had started last time we talked, I had expected more to come.

‘Recognise any voices?’ I asked, not that I had expected him to know any of them.

‘Jacob was calling his mother. I think they had both drunk the toxic water. He was asking his mother to kill him and she was screaming at him, but I was not sure if she was screaming at him because he was dying or because they were both dying.’ He replied and I felt for Jacob, he was a mother’s boy, and if she said to drink, he would have obeyed, no questions asked.

‘Patch it through, let me hear what is being said, please.’ I asked Gerome and he complied.

The screaming and crying was heard through the mic I was wearing and I looked over at Peggy and Zane as he tried to comfort her, holding her to his chest, and rubbing her back, and I was grateful that my mate was so compassionate. I needed to see that while I listened to the screams of the dying in the background.

Then I heard what I was waiting for.

‘Mother, please, cut out my stomach, I cannot cope with the pain any longer.’ You could hear the pain in his voice and it was heart breaking to hear. He might have been creepy, but he was not violent or hurtful.

‘I can’t, son.’ She screamed back at him, and I could hear fighting in the background, and I remembered that men had fought each other in hope of ridding themselves of the pain they were going through.

Then I heard the final scream from Jacob and knew he was gone. The wailing from Gladys was the first real emotion I had heard from her. It was not long after Jacob died that Gladys was screaming out in her own pain.’

‘Gerome, that is enough.’ I said and the sound was turned off.

‘Did you hear what you needed to hear?’ Gerome was emotionless as he spoke, having blocked himself from the sounds that were coming over the mic.

‘Yes, Jacob has just died and I think Gladys is not far behind, I cannot be sure but it sounded like that.’ I replied, when the screams died out, let me know, put the sound detector on so you do not have to listen to it and when the needle stops moving let me know.’

‘Okay, I will do, and Madison, I have never heard such horrific sounds before in my life, is this what you heard and went through before?’ He sounded so sad and I know we will need to help him heal over this too. Gerome was a gentle soul, never having to go out and fight, he had always been the main IT man, and since this treachery had started, he had not had that much to do with or hear such violence. He will most likely be living this memory for a while. I hope he replaces his mate, who can help heal his heart of this unnecessary burden.

‘Yes.’ Was all I said, as no more words were necessary.

‘Zane.’ I called through the mind-link to Zane, who looked up at me over Peggy’s shoulder as he held her closely to him, trying to give her the support she needed, as I don’t think Zeek was gone yet and when he does die, she will most likely be a mess for a little while.

‘Jacob has just died and I think Gladys is not too far behind, though I am not sure. It could have been her tears because of his death.’ I said. Zane nodded to me and he watched me to see how I was doing. I was fine, though listening to all those in pain was hard. I am not immune to hearing those people in pain. My heart breaks each time, all those wasted lives, all those who might have been saved, then I think of the women and children of the pack listening to the adults in pain. Oh, I really hope they did not make the children drink that potion. That would be so bad, all those innocent lives.

‘Peggy.’ Peggy pulled away from Zane and looked over at me. Her eyes were red-raw from all her tears, her cheeks drenched.

‘There are a lot of children over there, listening and watching the adults screaming in pain, they are going to be traumatised. If you do not want to take care of them, I would like permission to take them through the tunnels and to my home, where we can try and replace them homes. They are going to need a lot of love and patience.’ I was hoping by talking about the children that she would pull herself out of her own misery and think of others that are being affected by this drama.

‘Oh, those poor children. Yes, of course, we have to help them. Once we know what we are up against, it is too soon to open the caves, there may be some still ready to fight, how long before we should go out and investigate?’ Peggy asked, and I thought she had a direction now and that hopefully would make her start planning for the aftermath and get past her own pain.

‘Can you get in contact with your scout and replace out what he can see from his vantage point, he would be hearing and seeing the c*****e that is going on. I just hope he is well hidden.’ I suggested, and Peggy’s eyes widened as if she had forgotten he was out there.

Peggy’s eyes glazed over and I looked at Zane as we waited for her to finish talking to her scout.

Her eyes returned to looking at me and I knew it was a sad time for that scout, just by seeing her sad eyes.

‘He said, that many were dead, that even many of the older children were also dead, those mercenaries had left on the trucks they arrived in. They had a big fight about taking the drink that Gladys wanted them to drink and they refused to drink it, so Gladys demanded that all who refused to drink the potion to leave. Many rogues left too. He said he could still hear screaming and would let me know when the screaming stopped, and when that happened, he would scout around a bit, but at the moment too many are still alive and it is dangerous to be near them, they are crazy with pain.’ Peggy seemed to have taken a new direction, and she was looking like the Peggy we had begun to know.
