The Wannabe Warrior
Chapter 23

Madison POV

Dinner was great. I love the food here. Zane has said he will introduce me to Mary, the main cook; she sounds like a real sweetheart.

We had just reached the desserts, when Alpha whispered that we were to have a meeting after dinner. I am so tired, all I want to do is head to bed and sleep, but when the Alpha orders, you have little choice but to attend.

I skipped dessert, and I don’t really have a sweet tooth. Gabbing another cup of coffee to take with me, we headed to the meeting room.

When we reached the room, Mitch was waiting at the door.

‘Go to Alpha’s office please.’ Mitch sent us on to Alpha’s office.

Confused, we headed to Alpha’s office. I looked over at Zane, but he didn’t seem like he had any idea what was going on either.

Zane knocks on Alpha’s door and we hear “Enter” from inside.

The office is larger than what I had expected. He had his very large desk and piles of papers on it and a computer and other stuff you would expect in his office, a two, two-seater couch, another small table and a door to what looked like a stationary room. To the right was another door that was open and the room had a large oval table and chairs around it, a large overhead screen.

Alpha was waiting in that inner office room, sitting at the computer at the desk.

We entered the room and saw my brother Graham, two warriors I had met earlier today and another guy I had no idea who he was, and four older men, possible elders of the pack.

‘Good you are here, come take a seat, Madison. This is Gerome, our IT specialist and the one who is the one who has your phone.’ Alpha motioned to the guy. I nod as he hands over my phone.

‘That is an amazing phone you got there. You have a number of apps I have never seen before. I would be interested in spending some time with you when things settle down a bit and go over them and the security gadgets you have.’ Gerome politely suggests and I nod, taking my phone and sitting down.

I had put in my bag the little dots I made vibrate and cause interference with bugs picking up the sound. I handed the small bag over to Gerome. He looks at the dot in the bag and frowns at me.

‘Let me show you.’ I grab one of the dots and peel the back off of it, and then stick it to the wall behind him, and push the dot until you hear a click. Gerome stands and looks at the dot and back at me.

‘Cute, isn’t it? This little dot will stop any bugging device from working. Once you hear that click, you have activated it, and it will vibrate until you stop it. So far, the ones at home have been going for about four years now. It was a school project in science and technology class. This little thing will stop anyone using a bug. They would hear only static. I placed them all over the packhouse back home. You should set them up here, in all the rooms, so no one can listen in.’ I suggested, and sat back down. Gerome took a dot out of the bag and inspected it with interest, until Alpha called us to attention.

‘Sorry for the last-minute call to this room, we have better privacy here. In the future, if I call a meeting, I will say come to the office, you will know it is this room. First, I will let Gerome talk about what he has found.’ Alpha sat down and Gerome stood.

‘First, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Madison, who has managed to change the direction of our investigation in one day. The app on your phone picked up about fifty listening devises in various places throughout the packhouse. Luckily, none on any of the phones. Finding these has changed the way we are looking at the rogue situation. My snug replaceing device was not replaceing those replaceings in a low frequency range. Karen’s phone did have a location app on it, to locate your phone, Zane, you were right Zane, about her arriving at the pizza place after you, by following you on GPS. We have arrested her and she is in the cells, at the moment waiting for interrogation. Regarding the Advisor, I have not found a lot yet, though I can confirm that he was never a member of the Northern Pack, in any capacity. I have not contacted the Northern Pack concerning this as I thought that they might see we were investigating him. What I found out was through a good friend of mine, we are hunting for a good hacker at the moment to see if we can hack into the Northern Packs server. That is all for now.’ Gerome sat back down.

‘Gerome,’ I called, ‘I can do the hacking. I have been known to break a few firewalls in my time. I offer my services when I am not out tracking.’

‘Wow, is there anything you can’t do?’ Gerome laughingly called back.

‘We called you to this room, because we want the other room to look like we are still hunting rogues to the north and west, though we are now looking to the south and east. We do not want anyone outside of this room to know what we are up to. I have found that I am having my trust tested, and you in the room are the only ones I trust fully. Although I know most of my pack are trustworthy, they talk freely, and by doing so, they are passing on information without realising it, so from here on out, any talk about the cave system or that old abandoned mine to the east, we talk here. When you go tracking in the cave direction, Madison, I want you to take Graham and his warriors only, Graham, make sure you guys know to say nothing, we are hunting people who are traitors and we have no idea who they all are, we are singling out the Northern Pack for now, but others may have been recruited, greed and power are both very motivating reasons to change packs. being promised either, can get young unhappy people to do unthinkable things. Okay Mitch, your turn.’

Mitch turned on the overhead screen and the land around here was displayed, just like in the meeting room.

‘So, I think most of you are familiar with it. What is on the screen, that is how it looked. When we used the information, we were getting from the Northern Pack and the Advisor, now. So watch this.’ he tapped a few buttons on the key board and the screen displayed a different scenario. ‘Madison’s comments had us thinking. She asked some very important questions before she headed out tracking today, and Zane suggested we remove all of their information and put in all the rogue sightings over the past six months. We have a completely different picture now. We are going to send out trackers to check the old mine site and get some surveillance on the cave system. I believe we can set up some small cameras at a few of the entrances and see what is going on over there. I also believe they will try and attack before all the warriors arrive, so we have less than two weeks. Our patrols will be tripled and we have put a few new traps around the inner perimeter and beyond. We need to meet later after we have these things in place to discuss where you may think they will attack from.’ Mitch sat down and we looked at the screen.

‘Alpha, the ball that is coming up, do you think they will attack before or during the ball festivities?’ Zane asked while still staring at the screen.

Alpha blanched and looked at Mitch.

‘We expect them before the ball. However, I would not put it past them to hold off and do it once the ball is in full swing. We just don’t know. They have had years of building up to this moment, and we have had one day so far.’ Mitch says in response to Zane’s question.

‘Go, rest, Madison. Tomorrow head to the caves system. Take a few cameras with you. Start at the furthest cave.’

‘Yes, Alpha, Gerome, you have them ready?’

‘I will meet you before you leave in the morning and give you what I have prepared so far.’
