Chapter 13

Leilani scoffs.

"I said your taste comes out of your a*s"

Leilani eyes Janet up and down before continuing.

"You wouldn't know a good thing if it drove a semi-trailer, running you over and then reversed over you a few times for good measure"

Janet is seething. Even with the packs decline, she is still the Luna, she has never been spoken to in such a way. "When did the group wh*re ever get a chance to speak?"

A collective growl rises from the five men and Leilani just raises her hand to silence them, eyeing Janet with a smirk. She raises her eyebrows and urges her to continue with a hand signal. Leilani really wants to see what a woman who can discard her own son can say.

Janet is bristling as she watches the young girl that somehow seems to be in charge of all these men. "Do you take them all at the same time?"

Weak. As if Leilani hasn't heard every type of slur against her, jealousy rages almost everywhere she goes when she goes out with her brothers. Leilani just leans back casually into Arlo, checking her nails in a nonchalant way like she doesn't take Janet seriously at all. "Why? Are you jealous?"

The elite squad just watches in amusement. They are usually professional, but since these people are just sh*t on the bottom of their shoes and the task they called in the elders for was not worthwhile in the slightest.

"Why would I be jealous of a woman that looks so easy and so desperate that she has to follow so many men?"

"Well, it looks like you haven't had a good f*cking since the turn of the century and that is probably why you are so uptight"

"How dare..."

"I do dare, listen here you old hag"

Leilani pauses as she looks over Charlie, who is sitting next to Ryker with a look of pure shock on his face.

"Maybe you wouldn't be in financial trouble if so much money wasn't spent on a certain potion that....."

Charlie jumps up from his seat, pointing his finger and waving it wildly as if that can stop her words. "Don't you dare"

"What? Have you got something to hide Alpha?"

All eyes are on Leilani like she is on a little secret that she is not meant to know. Leilani smirks. Janet doesn't focus on this point, she too standing up from her seat.

"Are you pathetic f*cks going to let her talk to us like that?"

Leilani can handle any word said against her, but anything said against her brothers is a different story. Leilani stands to her feet, she emits such an aggressive aura that it is almost palpable.

"You are the worst kind of person, you don't deserve love and the fact that your husband spends such a vast fortune so that he can cheat on you is laughable. All I can say is you deserve it"

Janet attacks Leilani without even thinking. Before anyone else can react, Janet is pinned face first on the ground with a foot on her back and her arm twisted up at such a peculiar angle, leaving her unable to move and unable to shift.

The boys all stand up from the couch, looking like the whole farce has nothing to do with them. Finlay says.

"Your problem is your own. Either you want to sell your son or you don't, because that is what you are doing. If they are willing to pay the price, then they deserve the product"

They shouldn't be here. This has nothing to do with warfare, replaceing loopholes to benefit such an unfit family, they wouldn't waste their time at all, it is just a family that wants everything.

Madden offers a hand to Leilani, who grabs it, releasing Janet and stepping over her, wiping her shoe on the carpet like she stepped on something dirty. Janet stumbles to her feet, her whole body shaking in rage.

"You b***h, I hope you get f*cked to death, the only fate a wh*re like you deserves"

Arlo reaches up, taking off his baseball cap.

"Don't you dare to speak to her like that"

The family of three take in all of Arlo's features in stunned silence. When Arlo joined the others tying the pack bonds and Charlie felt the bonds break, he assumed. They all assumed that was when Arlo died and they were surprised that he lasted for so many years. For Arlo to stand in front of them now in all his ripped glory, he is more magnificent than they could have ever imagined.

"You....You.....You..."

"Yes Charlie, me the weak and useless one"

There is nothing about Arlo that could be described as weak and useless. His whole persona screams strength and confidence. Janet looks like she has struck gold, like all her prayers have been answered, her greedy eyes look at her son. "This is perfect. You can marry the girl and Ryker can stay here"

The six start laughing so hard that Madden and Leilani have to double over. Arlo just stares at the woman that he used to call mother with his lips quirked, his emerald eyes blazing in harsh indifference.

"In what capacity do you want to sell me off?"

"You are our son"

"I stopped being your son a long time ago, somewhere around the time you sent me off to die"

"But you didn't. It looks like it did you good, so you should repay the favor"

Leilani has stopped laughing.

"To call you a mother is a stretch, I will call you an incubation pod........ Listen here, wench..."

Leilani pokes Janet in the chest with such force that Janet has to take a backward step.

"...You will get your grubby little mitts on Arlo over mine and my brothers' cold dead bodies and you don't have what it takes to make that happen, so why don't you shut that mouth that can only spew sh*t and sit the hell down" Leilani pushes the middle-aged woman back onto the couch. Arlo places a hand on Leilani's shoulder as he says.

"Look, to thank you both for being an egg and sp*rm donor, I can marry in my brothers place"

Leilani is held in place by Arlo's strong hand, her heart is in her throat. He wouldn't would he? As the family of three are looking victorious, Arlo continues.

"But my first act as the alpha of the other pack will be to erase the Aquamarine pack from existence"

"You wouldn't"

"But I would, father, you think I don't have the power? Your senses have dulled with age"

Charlie looks at his son, who looks like he could snap him like a twig and that is without his backup, and doesn't doubt his words.

"No, no, it is fine"

"That is what I thought"

Finlay looks at the family wanting to beat them all into the damaged floorboards.

"We are leaving"

Without another word, they leave the premises, leaving the stunned family behind. Ryker can only watch his last hope for his marriage leave, his last hope for running his own pack. He watches the brother that he always thought was so far below him walk off feeling that they are as different as heaven and earth, but unlike before, he is now the earth. He watches his dream girl clutch his twin brothers hand as they walk. How did it end up like this?

It isn't till they are back in the car and off the pack lands that the car erupts into a cacophonous cheer and the group start chattering and laughing. They won't get in trouble as this never required their intervention at all and they have been given the power to regulate themselves. They are sent to places, but while there they are able to do whatever they want, they never usually exercise such a right, usually keeping everything by the book and civil, keeping themselves detached from the situation. But sometimes it is hard to remain impartial and the elders should have expected something similar sending them to one of the previous packs.

After a quick dinner, they check into a hotel just near the airport. Standing in Madden's room, they discuss the day that was.

Leilani looks around, she is not regretful of what she said or did, but she knows she was in the wrong, she shouldn't have let that woman's words get to her, she should have remained impartial, they should have said they can't help and left.

"I don't think that I should be allowed to attend when we visit any of our previous packs"

"Hopefully that won't happen any time soon"

"Even if I had a hundred years I couldn't become tactful in the face of these people"

Hudson rubs the top of Leilani's head.

"Okay, you can sit the next one out"

Leilani looks around her five favourite people in the world.

"Who can I stay with tonight?"

"Lani, are you okay?"

While it isn't uncommon for them to share rooms, it is rarely two nights in a row and Lani looks like she has something on her mind. Leilani twists her fingers, she feels a weird sense of loneliness since she left Connor and she just doesn't want to be alone. "I am fine"

She buries that handsome man deep in her heart, but it doesn't cover that dull ache.
