Miranda and Sam sat by the stone table, seemingly engaged in conversation. Both of them were sitting quite close.
She wore a serious expression on her face while Sam listened intently, nodding occasionally. However, Paul caught sight of the faint smile playing on Sam’s lips. Even from such a distance, he could sense that Sam was trying to woo Miranda.
His eyes darkened inexplicably.
The next moment, Paul pulled out his phone and called Silas.
“Hey, Paul. What’s the matter?”
“Do you want coffee?”
“Huh?” Silas checked his phone screen to make sure it really was Paul calling. “What do you mean? Why are you suddenly talking about coffee?”
“Do you want some? It’s my treat. You can ask the others too.”
Silas immediately shouted loudly, “Dr. Jefferson is treating us to coffee. Anyone who doesn’t want coffee, raise your hand! Great, no one. Everyone wants coffee!”
“Alright, I’ll go buy it.”
“Wait, why don’t you just order delivery? It’s more convenient. Why go in person?”
Paul answered, “I’m already outside, so I’ll go and pick it up on the way. What are your orders?*
“Which café will you be going to?”
Paul named a café.
Silas said, “I want the signature latte with almond milk, less ice, less sugar. Make sure to ask them for extra milk foam on top, please. Sandy wants…”
Paul massaged his forehead. “That’s… too complicated. I can’t remember your order.”
Silas was baffled. Paul had to be joking.
He had a photographic memory. Usually, he only needed to read through once to commit complex experimental data to memory. Now, this was too complicated for him?
Paul said, “Send the orders to Miranda. I saw her downstairs, and I’ll go with her to pick them up.”
“Alright, good idea! I’ll send the orders to her right away…”
After the call, Silas quickly typed a message. “Done, and sent!” He also added a voice note, “Thanks for your help, Mimi!”
Suddenly, his smile froze. Wait a minute!
If Paul was going to get coffee, it would be easier to send the order to him. Why did he ask to send it to Miranda?

Why was he complicating such a simple issue? Was Paul trying to mess with him?

Paul called out, “Miranda.”
In the gazebo, both Miranda and Sam looked up at the same time.
“Dr. Jefferson? What are you doing here?”
Paul answered honestly, “I was just passing by.”
The smile on Sam’s face faded as he stood up and extended his hand. “We meet again, Dr. Jefferson.” “Mr. Cooper, nice to meet you,” he replied.
Their eyes met. One seemed calm, while the other appeared indifferent. The tension in the air began to rise.
“Mr. Cooper, you must be quite free to pay the college a visit.” Paul released his grip and immediately retracted his hand.
Sam replied, “I’m here on a request to help Dr. Sanchez with something.”
At that moment, Miranda saw Silas‘ message. She turned to Paul in surprise. “Dr. Jefferson, are you treating everyone to coffee?”
“Yes. I tried the latte you gave me last time and found it pretty good. I’m going to the same place today.” Paul mentioned the name of the café.
Miranda nodded. “Alright, but please give me some time to finish. It’ll be just a moment.”
“Okay.”
Initially, Sam still had a faint smile on his face, but his smile disappeared when he heard the name of the café. A suspicion started to form in his mind as he asked, “Dr. Jefferson, do you drink lattes too?”
“I never did before. I only tried the one Miranda bought last time and found it quite tasty.”
“Was it hot or cold?”
Paul smiled. “It’s warm.”
“Is there anything special on the packaging?”
“I remember there was a hand–drawn picture of a heart with a Cupid’s arrow on the cup. Do shops now offer such personalized services? They even draw on the cups of drinks now!”
Sam’s heart, which was in his throat, sank in despair. It was the same cup he had bought for Miranda!
“Alright.” Miranda was done reviewing Sam’s answer key to the final exam. “There are three answers where the details are lacking. I’ve added the notes in pen beside them. You can take it back to Dr. Sanchez now.”
