Who Is My Husband -
Scene 17
She blinked as she looked at the man in the mask. She saw him standing near the gate holding two beautiful horses by their leads.
A horse the color of white clouds shined on one side of him and on the other an all-ebony horse fidgeted by stamping his hoof at the ground. It shook his head up and down impatiently. She looked a bit confused and then over to Trey. She wished she could see his face behind the mask. What facial expression was he making?
She looked back at Reggie who was smiling at her with this silly grin. She gave him a peculiar look before walking up to Trey. As she closed the gap between them the two horses both turned their heads and stared at her. The black horse became incredibly still. Then both horses did something that made her stop walking completely. They both lowered their heads to her and extended one of their legs forward. It was as if they were both bowing to her… well not as if they were, that is exactly what they were doing.
“Don’t do that.” Kailee said feeling uncomfortable. Both horses immediately straightened up and stood still with their attention on her. These horses felt different. They were not like the horses she had seen in the stables or the ones she had seen hooked up to carriages. There was something else about them that was different. Besides they bowed to her, and no other horses have ever done that before.
Trey stood there quietly observing the situation. He glanced up to the doorway to see Reggie was perplexed as well. He thought he knew about the girl he had married but apparently, he was wrong. There was far more to her than what he had originally thought. He reached his hand out for her to come closer.
“Looks like they know who their new owner is already.” Trey said, trying to brush off the weird moment.
“Owner?” Kailee pointed at her self with wide eyes.
“Happy birthday. I brought these two beauties back with me from my travels as a birthday gift to you.” Trey was smiling behind his mask as he watched her shocked reaction.
Kailee raised her hand up to her open mouth and gasped slightly. “They… They are mine.” Her voice rasped out. She watched him nod his head slowly. She didn’t know what to say or think or do. Her eyes watered up as her bottom l*p quivered slightly. They were a present for her and not just any present. They were beautiful horses. She had never received a gift so extravagant… hell she hadn’t received a gift in years. She was elated over the cake she was given. “Thank you.” She whispered out quietly. She could feel Trey’s gaze staring at her but she kept her focus on the horses.
“What are their names?” Kailee asked as she wiped her damp eyes.
Trey dropped the reins of the two horses letting them fall to the ground. He then stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Kailee. He held her there and rubbed her back. Her pure honest reaction gutted him. She was in tears over his present. She was so shocked to be given a gift and this hurt his heart.
“From now on Kailee, anything you need or anything you want… you need only to only tell me. These horses were only the first of many gifts from me. I want you to have whatever it is that you want. I will give you everything that I can. Your happiness is my happiness.” Trey’s tender tones rang near her ears. He took a small step away and smiled. “They are your horses. Why don’t you name them? The dark beauty there is a gentleman and the white one is a lady.”
Kailee looked up at the tall man in front of her. Was her happiness really his happiness? What she really wanted, more than anything in the world, was a place where she was loved and had a home. Honestly, that was all she wanted.
“I’m sure they already have names… don’t you guys?” Kailee looked at the two horses who nickered in return. A loud squawk sounded in the sky and Kailee looked up to see Sparks descending. He landed on the fence post and squawked loudly.
“Sparks.” Kailee smiled and walked over to him. “You haven’t been staying around a lot lately. You cheating on me with another lady?” Sparks flapped his wings and protested loudly vocally. “Not that I can believe you anyways. You are keeping secrets from me too. Sparks, are you able to tell me their names?” She motioned over to the two new horses. Sparks ruffled his feathers and squawked loudly.
“Those are most fitting names.” Kailee smiled as Sparks began to say more to her.
The men were only hearing bird noises but to Kailee it came in like a regular voice would. Sparks looked at her as he hopped to the side. He lifted his head up to look over at Trey before he took off to the sky again. Kailee watched as he flew away. He was never around as much as he used to be but maybe that was only because Kailee was alone then. He knew she was lonely and was looking out for her. Now, she was always surrounded by others and according to Sparks she was safe with them. So, he must feel like he doesn’t have to hover as much.
“What did he have to say?” Trey asked.
Kailee directed her attention away from the sky and back towards Trey. She smiled and shrugged. “The same basic annoying things that he has been saying lately. Don’t wander off and stay close to you guys blah blah blah.” She rolled her eyes in annoyance.
“He is right. You do need to stay close to one of us so we can keep you safe.” Trey said as Kailee waved a hand at him dismissively.
“Yeah yeah yeah.” She said coyishly and then grinned at him. She then looked back at the two horses. “Onyx and Pearl, is it?”
The horses nodded their heads and nickered softly. “I guess you two are my two newest friends.” She walked up and rubbed both of their heads. She turned her head and looked at Trey. “Thank you for them.” She wanted to make sure she said it properly and not crying.
He walked up to her and wrapped his arm around her side. “Reggie, see to Onyx and Pearl.” He looked at Kailee as he spoke. “Let’s go somewhere where I can take this mask off.”
“It is so hot today too. You must be roasting under that.” She reached her hand up and went to touch the metal with her fingertips only to have him jerk backwards slightly. Kailee huffed in annoyance and stepped away from him. “I wasn’t going to take your mask off. I just wanted to feel how hot it was.” Honestly the reaction hurt her feelings.
“I’m sorry Kailee.” Trey said quickly and reached out to her but she took a step back. He could see the pain in her eyes and inwardly cursed at himself for causing it. “It was a trained reaction Kailee. Honest. I trust you.” He grabbed her hands and placed them both on his hot mask. The sun’s heat had baked into the mask. “Do whatever you feel you need to Kailee.” His green eyes bore into her own through his mask.
Kailee lifted her hands away from him and shook her head. “I don’t want to. I don’t want to take your mask off. I want for you to show yourself to me on your own. I don’t want it to be forced by myself. You need to protect your identity for now… I understand, I guess. I’ll wait until you show me yourself. But… don’t blame me if I get you confused for someone else until then.” Kailee smirked and turned away from him walking back into the castle. When she was close… really close she knew who Trey was without seeing his face. Because she could smell him. But she wouldn’t tell him that. She wanted him to think there was a possibility she could confuse him with another. Though she had no idea why she could smell Trey.
She heard his low chuckle sound as he ran up behind her. His arm wrapped around her side and her body was pressed into his. “Your body is leaning more and more who it belongs to.” His voice was low and sensual. His fingertips played with her inner side as he led her down an unfamiliar hallway. He stopped and pressed on a block that moved in from his pressure. At the same time the wall shifted slightly. She looked up at him as he pulled her inside of the room. Inside was another short hall with a door at the end.
“Wait here.” Trey shut the wall and the room became completely dark.
She felt his body come back up behind hers and she heard the sound of the wooden door being opened. She allowed him to lead her through the pitch dark as she was unable to see. The door shut again behind him and then she heard the familiar sound of his mask clanking on a desk. He walked up behind her and buried his head in her neck.
“I’ve been waiting to do this all day.” His voice came out in a quiet growl as he nipped and licked at her neck. He inhaled deeply into her skin as he pressed small wet k****s up her jaw line. “I know this isn’t ideal, but we can still talk and get to know one another this way.”
“I’m afraid I am going to run into something.” Kailee breathed out trying not to let him see how much he had affected her right then.
“I would never let you run into anything.” Trey grabbed around her waist and lifted her into his arms.
Her arms came up around his neck as she held onto him. He carried her a few feet before she felt him lowering herself down. She felt around as she tried to make out what she was sitting on. It was soft and cushioned. She felt the back and the arm and concluded it was a couch. She then felt a dip beside her, and his hand came out to intertwine with her own. She squeezed back into his fingers.
Talking and getting to know each other better was her idea but right now her mind kept dragging her down the same path as the night had. She kept imagining everything that had happened between them. And how he felt against her. She felt that evil heat rise to her cheeks. For a brief moment she was relieved about the darkness that was until something popped into her mind.
“How is it that you can navigate so well in the dark? Before I thought it was just because it was your room. But you move around effortlessly in here too.” Kailee could feel her heart gently pounding as she waited for his answer.
