“How long do we have before his spirit reaches his body?” Trey asked quietly.

Sparks pondered this for a moment. He can’t travel fast in his spirit form. It will take him at least a day to reach his destination… maybe longer. He will head straight for his tomb since he can’t do much in his current form.

“At least a day… It will only take us a couple hours to reach it. So, we can take some time to recoup and prepare. We also need to stabilize everything here.” Trey looked down at Kailee as she lifted her head up to him. “We will leave tomorrow to face Bane.” The others all deshifted into their human forms and gathered closer so they could listen to Trey’s words.

As soon as he comes out from the tomb he will be at his weakest. This will be the perfect time to destroy him.

Kailee nodded her head. But she had no intention of trying to destroy him. She was going to purify him. He wasn’t some creature of darkness. He was the forest spirit, and she was certain he could return to his true form.

“Everyone doesn’t need to come though. I can do this on my own.” Kailee said and heard laughing behind her. She turned her head to see Grum, Bethany and Lance laughing. She could even feel the vibrations under her fingertips from Trey’s chest.

“I think you know better than that.” Reggie said with a smile. He then turned and looked at the girl with auburn hair and hazel eyes. “You said we are not leaving until tomorrow?”

“Yes, that’s right.” Trey said and watched Reggie take commanding steps over to the girl and grabbing onto her wrist.

“Excuse us.” Reggie said tersely and walked away holding onto her hand.

“What does he want with Sorsha?” Kailee asked and noticed the smile on Trey’s lips.

“I think she is his mate.” Trey said watching Kailee’s eyes widen.

“Your mom’s shadow dragon has been Reggie’s mate all along? Well, I guess she technically isn’t your mom’s anymore because she told her she is with me from now on. Apparently shadow dragons magic came from my kind. That is how she knew who I was.” Kailee looked in the distance where Reggie and Sorsha disappeared. “I hope things work out between the two of them.”

“The mate pull is something that is hard to ignore.” Grum wrapped his arm around Bethany and smiled. “Trust me… I tried to ignore it but failed.”

Sparks sat there quietly staring off in the distance where Sorsha and Reggie had disappeared. Kailee noticed his peculiar reaction and looked at him.

“Sparks what is it?” Kailee asked.

Sparks turned and looked at Kailee. He inwardly was debating something. Kailee no matter what you are going to have to destroy Bane. But there is something I have been keeping from you. I am not your Keeper.

Reggie pulled Sorsha to a secluded area down near the lake where he dropped her hand and took a few steps away to turn and face her.

“Who are you? Why have I never met you before?” Reggie asked gently pinning his green eyes on hers.

“My name is Sorsha, I am a shadow dragon. I had to stay hidden and in secret. I worked for the queen as her informant. We always met in secret. Who are you?” Sorsha asked as she bit her bottom l*p.

“My name is Reggie, I am the prince’s cousin…” He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “I want to be honest with you. My past isn’t pretty. I’ve done a lot of things I regret but I’ve still done them. I also have used less then appropriate measures in order to get information. I think it is only fair for you to know this.”

Sorsha smiled and nodded her head. “The same goes for me. I have lived my life in the shadows keeping myself secret. In order to get information… well I had to rely on being a female or lurking in the shadows. I was alone a lot so I turned to others for a false sense of comfort. I agree it is only fair for you to know that I have not saved myself for you.”

Reggie sighed and smiled. “I don’t mind any of that. As long as from here on out I am the only one you seek comfort from.”

Reggie sighed and smiled. “I don’t mind any of that. As long as from here on out I am the only one you seek comfort from.”

Sorsha nodded her head and grinned. “The same goes for you. From now on you will need another means of gathering information.”

Reggie shrugged. “I have a mate who can meld into shadows. I think I have found my new method.” He took a step closer to her and brushed his fingers over her face. “I never thought I would replace someone who could make my heart start beating again.” He could feel his heart racing as his fingers trailed over her cheek and down to touch her lips.

“I actually need to tell you one more thing about myself.” Sorsha said with a frown. “You know about Kailee right? Everything about her?” She watched as his eyes looked at her curiously and he slowly nodded his head.

“Yes I do but how do you know everything about her?” Reggie asked.

“The truth is… my mother was her grandmother’s Keeper. When Kailee’s grandmother died my mother also died. As a Keeper our lives are connected to who we serve. It is how it works.”

__

Kailee looked at Sparks in shock. “I thought only the Stewards were connected to my life?”

Both your Stewards and your real Keeper are connected to your life. I am not your real Keeper. Shadow dragons are always the ones who are the keeper of the unicorns. But in order to keep you and your mother safe, we kept your Keepers away. Your mother’s Keeper died without ever meeting your mother. Though she knew they were connected. I had met her once. She lived an isolated life always on the run. The reason the shadow dragons were hunted is because they were searching for you. They were searching in case a unicorn existed. Sorsha is your Keeper, and her mother was your grandmother’s Keeper. Sparks could see the confusion in Kailee’s eyes.

“Who are you to her then?” Trey asked eyeing Sparks suspiciously. It was something he had already wondered but now he felt his suspicions more confirmed.

You already know… don’t you? Sparks lifted his head to Trey as little embers wafted in the air.

“Then who is Bane?” Trey said.

“Wait a minute… what am I missing?” Kailee asked looking between Kailee and Sparks.

My name is not Sparks. My name is August. And I am your grandfather… the forest spirit.

Kailee felt herself slink back and Trey caught her in his arms.

Let me explain. I am only the soul of myself. Your grandmother, Corra, saved my soul from darkness and sealed me inside of Sparks. He is harboring my soul and allowing me to still exist. I guess I am like a barnacle using his life to continue to exist. When my body became corrupt Corra dug deep inside and put my soul here. Then she passed me off as Meera’s Keeper so that I could watch over our daughter. When your mother was older I told her who I was. We had formulated a plan together to…

“Wait a minute… what happened to my grandmother?” Kailee asked as she bit on her lower l*p.

Your grandmother is the only soul that could ever remain untainted by darkness. She sacrificed herself by throwing herself inside of Bane. She was able to seal him within trying to preserve my life. She thought she could cast my body out and purify it. But it was too corrupt by darkness and too strong. She still exists… but within Bane.

Kailee. I love Corra, but you can not save us. I am telling you this because when you destroy Bane you will also be destroying my existence as well as Corra’s. But that’s okay Kailee. It is what has to be done. You can not purify Bane. You must seize this moment while he is weak to destroy him. Destroy him and live.

Reggie sighed and smiled. “I don’t mind any of that. As long as from here on out I am the only one you seek comfort from.”

“But… but what about the forest it needs you? What about Corra? She is trapped in darkness…” Kailee wondered if she could call out to her grandmother. She would still be alive inside of Bane, right? She still existed. And her grandfather, August, his body still existed inside of the corruption of Bane.

She couldn’t believe it. All this time she had her grandfather around. All this time he was there looking over her. Why didn’t he ever tell her?

I’m sorry Kailee. Your mother was pained when I told her the truth and I hoped to spare you from it as well. But I wanted to be able to tell you goodbye. I wanted you to know why I would no longer be with you.

“Well I guess we both have something in common. We both are going to protect Kailee with our lives. I wouldn’t let her die before… but now I definitely won’t let anything happen to her. I won’t lose you after just replaceing you. Our futures are all intertwined together.” Reggie wrapped one arm around Sorsha and pressed her body into his. “We don’t know what tomorrow will bring so let’s not waste the time that we have.”

Sorsha smiled and nodded up to him. “Whatever future I have I am happy that I have this time with you.”

As the sun began to set with its orange hue the blossoming couple’s lips met for the first time. Igniting a fire deep within the two of them. They didn’t know if they would have many days together, but they had this moment right now. Reggie didn’t know what he would do if he lost her already. He couldn’t go through that pain again. And this feeling was even stronger than what he had before for Lizzy. He couldn’t believe it, but the mate pull was intense. There was no way he could fight it, not that he wanted to.

Tomorrow they would replace out their fate. But tonight… they would discover each other.

“So, you are telling me I have to destroy my family. That I have no choice but to kill my grandparents?!” Kailee shook her head as her voice raised angrily. Trey’s hand rubbed over her arm soothingly as he tried to calm her down.

Don’t think of it that way Kailee. You are destroying Bane. It has to be done. We are but two lives in this whole world. This is your duty. As hard as it is to accept this is your responsibility. And I expect you to follow through with what must be done. August’s voice turned sterner as his gaze held with Kailee’s. This was not the voice of a friend. This was the voice of the patriarch of her family. And he was telling her to perform her duty no matter what.

Kailee squeezed her hand into a fist. A single tear trickled down her face and she set a fiery gaze back to Sparks. “No.” She shook her head angrily. “You don’t get to tell me what to do. I will figure it out myself. I am going to trust in myself and what I feel I am supposed to do. I am not my grandmother. I am not my mother. I am me, Kailee. And I am going to save my grandmother from darkness.”

The wind blew hard and tossed Kailee’s hair to the side. Trey’s grip tightened slightly on her arms as he continued to hold her. “I know this worries you…” Her voice then went soft as she glanced up to Trey. “I know this worries you all… But I refuse to believe this darkness is stronger than me. That this darkness is stronger than my kind. I’m going to beat it. I am going to give the forest back their forest spirit and I am going to save my grandmother. I will bring her out from darkness.”
