Chapter 87

Natalie hurriedly finished speaking, not lingering a minute longer, as she turned on her heel and vanished into the night.

Madelyn had meant to convey that Brian was fuming, which meant Natalie couldn’t come in, but given the situation…

She watched Natalie’s retreating figure for a long while before it hit her. Natalie didn’t know Nathan was her son!

How could that be? How could Natalie not recognize her own child? It was utterly bizarre!

Madelyn didn’t know the circumstances under which Brian had taken newborn Nate back to the country from abroad. Brian never shared the details with anyone.

But for whatever reason, the fact that Natalie didn’t recognize her child was undeniable!

Judging by Natalie’s expression, could she have thought Nate was Madelyn’s child?

Rooted to the spot, she was jolted back to reality by Brian’s voice behind her. “Madelyn, who was that?

“It was no one, just someone who rang the wrong doorbell,” she replied with feigned calm, swiftly picking up the ornate box from the ground and tossing it into the nearby rose bushes.

When she returned indoors, Brian was standing halfway down the spiral staircase, watching her expressionlessly.

Madelyn offered him a smile. “You’re still hurting, and you’ve got a fever. Why are you out of bed?”

Brian’s gaze drifted past her shoulder and through the window to the dimly lit garden outside. He was sure he had heard a woman’s voice at the door.

“Good timing. You’re awake. Time for your medicine.” Madelyn turned away from his probing eyes, poured him a glass of water, prepared his pills, and handed them to him.

Brian’s eyes sharpened as he studied her. “Wrong doorbell, huh? Why talk outside for so long?”

“The place is big. The woman didn’t know where number ten was, so I was giving her directions,” Madelyn replied, her composure unshaken.

Brian held her gaze for a few seconds before taking the pills and swallowing them down.

“Let me help you back to your room.” Madelyn set the glass aside and gently took Brian’s arm, her voice soft.

As they passed Nate’s room, Reid stood at the doorway, giving Madelyn a strange look.

Judging by the time of the phone call, the visitor must have been Natalie. But Nate had thrown

up just then, and Reid hadn’t managed to go down to open the door in time.

Chapter 87

Natalie hadn’t come in, and there must have been a reason. But as a bodyguard, it wasn’t his place to pry.

Halfway home, Natalie’s phone buzzed with a video call from Nina.

Natalie mustered her spirits to assure her she was okay and asked, “Weren’t you supposed to go to the hospital to visit King today? Why are you back home?”

Nina pouted. “King got transferred to another hospital, a place far from us. It’s a half–day drive, so Uriah didn’t let me go.”

Natalie frowned slightly, asking, “Why was he transferred?”

“I don’t know.” Nina shrugged. “I tried to video call King, but someone else picked up. He was sleeping, and I couldn’t talk to him.”

After a brief pause, Natalie softly said, “Okay, I see. Be good while you’re home alone.”

King’s condition was not like most. He didn’t need more than four or five hours of sleep a day, so he couldn’t possibly be sleeping during the day, which meant King’s condition must have worsened.

She immediately called Uriah, and as expected, Uriah said the medicine King needed for digesting blood clots had suddenly run out. He had contacted all the local hospitals, and none had it in stock.

*Could it be available somewhere farther away?” she asked anxiously.
