Sarah's pov.

The sun was up when I woke up. I sat on the edge of my bed, phone in hand, rereading Richard's message over and over.

"Wesley's been using you, Sarah. He's my rival. That's the only reason he got close to you."

It didn't make sense. Wesley? My Wesley? The man who had been there for me when I needed support the most?

The same man who helped me launch my business, who believed in me? My stomach twisted as the doubt began creeping in.

I replayed everything Wesley had said, all those times he praised my work. Was it all just a ploy?

I got up and started pacing, trying to make sense of it. Richard and Wesley had never crossed paths in front of me.

I hadn't known they were rivals, though Richard was always private about his business dealings.

But now that I thought about it, I remembered asking Wesley months ago why he was so interested in helping me.

He'd just smiled and said, "I see potential in you, Sarah. You've got something special."

I never questioned it at the time. I was so grateful for his help that I didn't see any reason to doubt him. But now...was Richard right?

I shoved the phone in my bag and stood up, pacing the length of my apartment.

My brain couldn't stop spinning. Richard was being petty, right? He couldn't handle that I was doing well without him.

That had to be it. But the seed of doubt was planted, and it was growing faster than I could push it away.

I need to focus. Work will take my mind off things.

The office buzzed with its usual chaos when I arrived. Phones ringing, keyboards clacking, the low hum of conversation.

I tried to immerse myself in the noise, hoping it would drown out my thoughts.

Zoe; my assistant was at her desk, talking animatedly on the phone, and I gave her a small wave as I passed by.

Inside my office, I threw myself into a pile of emails that had been waiting for me since yesterday.

My mind, though, wasn't cooperating. Each sentence blurred into the next, making it impossible to focus. I sighed, rubbing my temples.

I heard a knock on the door, and Zoe poked her head in. "You okay in here, boss?"

I looked up, forcing a smile. "Yeah, just one of those mornings."

Zoe walked in, balancing two mugs of coffee. "I figured. I saw the look on your face when you came in. Thought you could use this."

I took the mug from her, grateful for the distraction. "Thanks."

She plopped down in the chair across from me. "Want to talk about it? Or is this one of those 'Zoe, leave me alone and let me wallow' situations?"

I chuckled. Zoe had a way of lightening the mood, even when everything felt heavy. "It's just... stuff."

"Oh boy, Relationship kinda stuff?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

I hesitated. "Kind of. You ever have that feeling where you think you know someone, but then something comes out of nowhere and makes you question everything?"

Zoe leaned back in her chair, nodding. "Yeah, it's called replaceing out your ex has been DM-ing your cousin for three months."

I almost choked on my coffee. "Wait, what?"

She shrugged, unbothered. "Yep. Happened last year. Family reunions have been super weird since."

I couldn't help but laugh. Zoe had a knack for taking the most awkward situations and turning them into comic relief.

"Look," she said, her voice softening, "if you're feeling weird about something, maybe it's worth talking to him about it. You're a smart woman, Sarah. If something feels off, it probably is." I nodded, though I wasn't ready to admit that out loud yet. "Thanks, Zoe. I'll... figure it out."

Zoe stood up, dusting off her hands. "I'll let you get back to work. But if you need me to dig up some dirt on him, I know a guy."

I laughed again, feeling a little lighter. "I'll keep that in mind."

"See? Laughter is the best medicine," Zoe said with a satisfied grin.

"Yeah, yeah," I chuckled, handing her a report I wanted her to work on. "You're lucky you have a good sense of humor, or I'd fire you for wasting my time."

She gave a mock gasp. "You'd never fire me. I'm the glue that holds this place together."

"You keep telling yourself that," I teased, feeling lighter for the first time that morning.

Midway through the day, I had an important meeting with one of our clients, and I forced myself to push everything else aside.

The presentation had to go well; this deal was a big one. My team gathered in the conference room, ready to go, when I realized something wasn't right. "Wait, where's the report?" I asked, scanning the materials in front of me.

One of my team members, Mark, looked up sheepishly. "Uh, it's not ready yet. We're missing some numbers from the finance department."

I felt a rush of frustration rise in my chest. "Mark, I needed that report for this meeting. What happened?"

He scratched the back of his head. "I... kind of forgot to follow up."

My jaw tightened. "You forgot? We've been preparing for this meeting all week."

Zoe, who had just walked in, overheard the exchange and immediately chimed in, trying to defuse the situation.

"Hey, hey, deep breaths, everyone. We've got this. Sarah, I can run and grab the numbers from finance right now. Give me ten minutes."

I glanced at the clock. The client was due in five minutes. "We don't have ten minutes, Zoe."

She gave me a sympathetic smile. "Trust me. Stall them for a bit. Tell them the mixing machine is broken, or there's been a small earthquake, I don't know. I'll be back in a flash." I sighed. "Fine. Go."

Zoe darted out of the room, and I looked at my team. "Alright, we're going to improvise until we have the numbers. Keep the focus on the bigger picture."

Mark nodded, looking relieved, but I could see he felt bad. I gave him a reassuring smile. "It's okay. We'll fix this."

By the time the meeting was over, my energy was drained.

We'd managed to get through it without any major disasters, thanks to Zoe's quick thinking.

I checked my phone-Wesley had texted, confirming our meeting for later.

My heart started racing again.

I tried to prepare myself mentally for what I was about to ask him. I wasn't going to accuse him outright-at least, not yet.

I needed to hear his side of things. But if what Richard said was true... I didn't even know what I'd do.
