After I’m done explaining the well and the ship and all the information I can remember on the spot…. Hades adds in his piece, we bounce off our combined ideas and thoughts about the mystery, and then we both await the reaction of Vastian and Skye.

They sit opposite us at Hades’ table, and they’ve listened to every word.

Now?

They’re both quiet as they nod very slightly.

And that’s the only reaction.

They’re too stunned to speak.

“Now you know why the Dominions are a construct,” Hades gets excited, after the hour relaying the information, he even leans over the table to speak to Vastian with the same understanding of loving science and the mystery behind new discoveries, “We’re all in a game – or a science experiment. We have to stop playing by the rules.”

“That’s your only answer so far,” I murmur to Hades, chuckling a bit.

“…an experiment…” Vastian breathes his first worded response, as he looks at the ceiling, thinking deeply, “…needs an aim… results… a control… a conclusion… and you redo the experiment to get better results, with improvements,” Vastian finally speaks, and he actually sounds rather calm.

“The control is something neutral,” Hades bites it, and points his finger and his nail into my temple, digging in as he points aggressively at me, to show both his affection and playful abuse, “‘Human’, the control, then the factors… Wolf, Cat, Reptile, Bear. Scenario – Genesis. The Dominions also factor in.”

“The result, war,” Skye also adds in, very deathly, “Genocide.”

“Wait, I’m trying to remember something,” I speak up, because this discussion has triggered it, I had focused so much on the murdered bodies and clones I forgot about the small things I read while walking through, “In some kind of assembly area, or a community room in the Acklen, I replace a large plaque on a wall… something like… Our Mission, to originate, rediscover… evolve…”

I can’t remember the rest.

But Hades does, “Return… for humanity,” he murmurs, “I forgot about that too – I’ve only been in their once, I never returned, fearing I’d never leave twice.”

“So, you let me in on a secret place you thought I might never escape from?” I punch his arm, “Some lover you are,” I make the joke, because we aren’t lovers, more like almost-kind-of-lovers, but I forget momentarily… Skye.

It had been so long, and as soon as I say it, I feel the heat of Skye’s glare ramp up, focusing onto me. I glance over to his neon blue Alpha eyes and he’s carefully assessing Hades, looking him over, then me next.

Thankfully, Vastian has started writing this shit down.

And now he takes over, “You have it, there, with those words,” Vastian whispers, “Key words – Mission, originate, rediscover, evolve, return, for humanity.”

“I actually know we’re all originally humans,” I add.

“The planet we came from –” Vastian keeps going.

“Earth, I think,” I interrupt, pretty certain.

“Earth, then, could not sustain humans or humans could not sustain Earth. Either option, we came here to improve function. To dominate better. To rule better… to rediscover power, to be better apex predators,” Vastian says it all, “Humans, what you were, and all who weren’t Zyre and ‘naturally evolved’, are the weak degenerative forms, that needed to level up…”

“Or needed protection,” I add, “For humanity.”

“You’re right, Ryder, yes,” Vastian is excited, so is Hades, they’re both practically squirming in their seats with these answers. Skye and I are different, we sit like brooding warriors, not too worried about the outcome, more interested in what it meant for us, selfishly – and what we wanted. For me, I just didn’t want to be alone. For Skye… I’m sure he missed being top Alpha with a Dominion around him.

“Hades thought aliens brought us here,” I quickly add, just to burst the twins’ cute bubble moment.

“Hades has always loved stupid fantasies,” Vastian immediately insults him, “No. Not aliens, brother,” Hades loses his smile.

“It wasn’t impossible,” Hades growls under his breath, through his teeth, at Ryder and Vastian, “It was entirely probable aliens brought us here to fuck with us.”

“Humans came here to evolve,” I cut him off, “Okay. Now what. How do we tell everyone? What happens if we do?”

“I don’t want to play someone’s experiment, I’m out from the game,” Hades adds, aggressively.

“Even that reaction is a part of it,” Vastian smiles, “You can’t escape it.”

“So what,” Hades snaps.

“We keep playing it, it’s reality, it’s meant to happen, and we should want Wolves to win,” Vastian smirks.

I lose my brief smile.

“So, we’re back to square one? War again?” I ask, asking neutrally.

“Not me, baby,” Hades takes out a smoke from his pocket and puts a hand on my thigh.

Skye finally cracks it.

“Show me this fucking well,” Skye interrupts Hades from lighting his recreational lung destroyer.

“My pleasure, brother,” Hades drawls, lights the smoke and breathes in death.

Aside from the fact it was clear Skye already missed possessing my fucking soul, I knew he would also want to see this ship underground with his own eyes.

“I’m coming with you,” I add, neutrally.

They all go quiet, but they don’t deny me.

Besides, I wanted to see the Acklen again, and two pairs of eyes were better than one.
