Evelyn looked at Norman Nixon in shock and exclaimed, "Norman?”

Her crisp voice had turned hoarse because of the chanting.

Yet, the way she called out his name melted Norman's heart.

Even if his mother found out the truth and beat him to death, he would still think that it was worth it.

"I have gone to the town yesterday and bought two packets of drugs as per your instructions. Both William and Ezra have been drugged by me. It's time for you to go! They have been drugged so heavily that I think they will only wake up tomorrow at noon. By then, you will have reached the town!"

Looking at his silly and honest face, Evelyn was confused.

"Your mother said that I'm a bad and vicious woman. Aren't you worried that I will return to hurt your mother for revenge?"

Norman looked at her in the eyes and shook his head. "You are so beautiful-looking. Even after being abused, you still have such clear, bright eyes. I believe you are a good person."

Evelyn was stumped by his words.

What clear, bright eyes? It's only part of my acting. Fool!

I have been making use of him. Yet, he still thinks so highly of me. Such a stupid guy.

She sighed and gave Norman a hug.

"Thank you. In times of desperation, you are the only person who treats me well. I will always remember you!"

Norman was very happy to hear that from her. "Quick! It's time to go. Once the rain stops, your track will have been washed away."

"All right, then. See you!"

Without further ado, Evelyn turned and ran away.

Norman stared at her retreating figure while she was leaving.

In the hut, both William and Ezra had fallen into deep sleep.

Only Margaret's paralyzed husband was protesting.

His babbling sounded extremely odd against the sound of the falling rain.

Meanwhile, Evelyn put up with the pain in her knee and was running in the woods.

Norman told her not to take the route that she had come from. It would take a lot of time and effort to use that route.

He specifically told her to follow the river and go downward until the next village.

That road was so much more smooth and bright. Once she reached the village, it would be hard to locate her.

She ran along the countryside road.

The further she got away from Margaret's house, the more excited she became.

The days of abuse was worse than life in the prison. It was hellish.

Now, she could finally escape from the clutches of Gwendolyn!

When she saw the river that Norman was telling her, she burst out laughing. The falling rain sounded like music to her ears. It was as if the rain was celebrating her freedom! "Gwendolyn, just wait and see. Very soon, I will come back and look for you!" she looked up and yelled at the sky.

Just then, two men appeared behind her. "Stop right there!"

Evelyn turned around in bewilderment.

The two men were holding guns and looking at her in an unfriendly manner. Quite obviously, they knew who she was.

There were not many people who were allowed to own firearms in Chanaea unless they were from the military. Are these men sent by Cedrick to keep an eye on me? Evelyn started running like crazy.

Cedrick's men chased after her and said, "Evelyn, you can't get away! Stop running, or we will shoot!"

Still, Evelyn did not stop. She did not turn around either.

Once again, she had fallen into endless despair.

Initially, she thought that she could get away after dealing with Gwendolyn's bodyguards.

Little did she realize that Cedrick had eyes on her. Even God won't give me a chance?

"Gwendolyn, Cedrick! Even if I die, I will never go back!"

As she ran toward the river, she yelled out. At that moment, she hated them so much.

Nothing was more disheartening than to be given hope and then pulled back into the abyss once more.

If Cedrick's men caught her, her abuse would only get worse.

Norman would not be able to help her again. Her life would be filled with endless hellish days.

She ran with all her might to the river. Once in a while, she would turn back to check on her pursuers.

The river was surging because of the rain.

Once she got to the river bank, she jumped into the river without any hesitation.

"Evelyn!"

Bang!

A loud gunshot rang out immediately.

The bullet hit Evelyn in her left shoulder. Blood gushed out, and she fell into the water.

Very soon, there was no sign of her.

The two men ran alongside the river.

One of them called and reported to Cedrick while he ran.

In the meantime, Cedrick was seated in the living room of the Harris residence and listening to a discussion about Marcus. His phone had been turned to silent mode. As such, he did not answer his phone. Marcus' condition had worsened, and it was only a matter of time.

He would most likely succumb in two days.

Gwendolyn did not participate in any of the subsequent matters, nor did she stay up late because she was pregnant.

After listening to the suggestions from Kieran, Sienna, and Treyton in her fuzzy state, she was too weak to walk. Cedrick carried her into the car, and they drove off to Harrick Villa.

When they arrived home, Gwendolyn lay on the recliner, looked at the rain, and said nothing.

Cedrick knew she was withholding her sadness, so he kept watch by her side.

After a long time, Gwendolyn said, "Ceddy, let's cancel our wedding."

Cedrick's back stiffened when he heard her words.

However, he knew something like that would happen. When one's parent passed away, the person had to mourn for a period of time. During that period, they should not hold any celebratory events. Furthermore, there was no way Gwendolyn could enjoy the wedding under such circumstances.

He got down in front of Gwendolyn, held her hands, and said softly, "Sure. It will be fine with me as long as I can be by your side." Gwendolyn caressed his face and felt very guilty indeed.

"I'm sorry. You have forsaken sleep and food because of the wedding preparation. Yet, it has been canceled now. It's my fault." "What are you talking about? This isn't your fault."

Cedrick smiled and did not mind at all. Instead, he held her hand that was touching his face and massaged her palm. Unknowingly, he had used his left hand. It was then Gwendolyn saw the plaster. She moved his left hand closer to her. "What happened to your hand? When did you get hurt? Why didn't you tell me?"
