Wooing My ex-wife (Gwendolyn and Maverick) -
Chapter 489
Chapter 489 Late Night Interrogation
"You want to kill Gwendolyn?"
Although Craig did not believe that completely, he released his grip on Charles' neck slightly.
Charles' cheeks had already turned pale. Even though it was starting to get difficult to breathe, he continued without skipping a beat, "Craig, you've never experienced true despair. I don't care what price I have to pay as long as Cedrick dies. Although I love Gwendolyn so much, she eloped with Cedrick so decisively during the wedding. I ended up being the joke of the town. I can't forgive her for that either. Since they're so in love with her, they can just accompany each other to the grave."
A despairing yet vicious smirk played on his lips, making him look a bit scary.
With a raised eyebrow, Craig scrutinized Charles' expression before withdrawing his hands. "You're a madman, indeed. Your psyche is completely screwed up. However, this is good."
Enduring the pain in his throat, Charles coughed slightly, his expression still remaining the same.
Craig gently stroked Charles' neck, which had red imprints left from his fingers. His voice became softer as he said. "Since you've finished toasting the guests, there's nothing else for you to do in the garden. Go back to your room and rest."
"Got it. Craig."
"Okay." Craig averted his gaze and left the shadowy corner.
It was until Craig's figure had completely been absorbed into the lively scene in the garden that Charles. finally let out a careful sigh of relief.
He took out an unopened packet of powder from his pocket and gripped it in his fist.
After Craig left, Gwendolyn deliberately kept a low profile. She evaded everyone's vision and appeared in front of Charles.
Both of them shared a gaze and smiled.
Craig, who had just returned to the welcome party lobby, was finally stopped by Karl.
"Bad news, Mr. Craig!" Karl's face was filled with panic as he whispered beside Craig's ears. "My key to the top floor has disappeared. Only Mr. Charles was by my side before the welcome party started." The expression on Craig's face changed drastically. Fury raged in his eyes as he roared through gritted teeth, "Charles Newton!"
Just when he turned around to enter the villa, Karl stopped him. "Don't be angry yet, Mr. Craig. I'm just feeling suspicious. Since there are so many guests around, it's not appropriate to spread the news about the top floor. Since Mr. Jenson is present, it might easily lead to a major commotion."
After a brief moment of rage, Craig quickly suppressed the look of fury in his eyes.
He passed his key to the top floor to Karl and instructed calmly, "Don't make a huge fuss about it yet. Find a chance to head to the top floor and see how's the situation. Check if anything's missing."
"Understood."
Karl turned around and followed the instructions.
Craig summoned another two bodyguards over. "Head upstairs and keep a close eye on Mr. Charles. Don't let him leave the room."
Charles, who had just returned to his room, was pacing back and forth uneasily.
I've already passed everything to Gwen. I'll have to return the key to the top floor to Karl when the right chance arises.
He kept observing the situation in the garden. Just when he was about to leave his room, he realized that there were two bodyguards standing outside. "What are you doing?"
The two bodyguards bowed respectfully. "Mr. Craig said that since you're feeling unwell, you should rest in your room."
"I'm already rested, so I'm fine now. It's my welcome party tonight. Can't I accompany Craig downstairs to greet the guests?"
The bodyguards remained adamant. "No. Mr. Craig instructed that you're not allowed to leave the room. After the welcome party, he'll visit you personally."
No matter what Charles said, the two bodyguards did not budge even an inch. All they repeated was Craig's instructions. Charles suppressed his anger and slammed the door forcefully, separating himself from the two annoying bodyguards. He's keeping such a close eye on me. Have I been exposed?
He touched his pocket. The key that he had stolen from Karl was still with him.
After the welcome party, Craig would definitely run a search on him and in his room.
Hence, Charles turned off the lights. Shrouded in utter darkness, he secretly tossed the key diagonally from the window.
The key landed amongst the grass in the garden.
Someone passed by and accidentally stepped on the key, pushing it further into the soil. Only half of its golden rim was exposed while the rest was covered securely by the grass. The welcome party ended at half past ten at night.
Soon, the guests left one by one.
Gwendolyn and Cedrick also left the Newton residence with the guests.
"Look, Hubby."
When their car was far away from the Newton residence, Gwendolyn took out two items from her bag.
One contained a transparent serum, while the other was a packet of powder.
Cedrick took the serum and inspected it carefully with a solemn look. "We can't drag this any longer. Let's. send the serum to Joshua at War Laboratory and let him check it.” Gwendolyn nodded while passing him the other packet of powder. "Look at this now."
"What's this?"
"The poison that Craig gave him. Craig wants to kill you tonight."
"Do you know what drug-this is?"
Gwendolyn shook her head. "Since there's no time, he didn't manage to tell me. After we replace out what the unknown serum is and confirm that it's lethal, we can bring out this packet of powder and pin the crime. on Craig. There's no way he can deny it."
With a solemn look, Cedrick said. "He gave you the packet of powder too. If Craig replaces out that Charles didn't manage to fulfill his task, he won't let Charles off the hook easily."
"Don't worry. Charles did add something to the red wine in front of Craig."
Cedrick was curious. "What did he add?"
Gwendolyn chuckled and flicked his forehead. "What's up with you? Your sense of taste is horrible. He added some salt. Didn't you taste anything?"
Cedrick was speechless. No, I didn't. It's my
mistake.
Gwendolyn rubbed the packet of powder carefully. "Everything must be ending soon."
Cedrick pulled her into his arms and kissed her forehead.
Half an hour later, Joshua, who had just fallen asleep, was woken up in the middle of the night. He hurried to the laboratory to work overtime.
"Cedrick, since we don't know what the drug's called, we can only check the ingredients one by one and see which record in the database yields the highest similarity. It's a very time-consuming task, so I'm afraid that it'll take till tomorrow noon. Why don't you go back first? You don't have to stay here."
Since that was what Joshua said, Cedrick did not think about it. He just left the laboratory with Gwendolyn and returned home to sleep.
At midnight, all the lights at the Newton residence were still on.
The housekeepers and bodyguards were extremely scared.
The terrifying sounds of whips resounded from the ancestral hall repeatedly, piercing the silence of the night.
Lucas and Jasmine were so scared that they stood beside the pillars in the ancestral hall obediently. They were so terrified that their bodies shivered uncontrollably.
Late Night Interrogation
Two yellow canes, which had already been snapped into two, lay in the corner.
Charles was kneeling on the icy floor, his body swaying slightly. Sweat dotted his head as his face turned pale..
He was wearing a thin white shirt, on which appeared numerous bloody streaks.
Despite the waves of excruciating pain that attacked him, he clenched his fists tightly and endured them silently.
Craig was standing behind him, holding a shiny and strong cane. He whipped it on Charles' injured body without any signs of pity. The abuse continued.
