Wooing My ex-wife (Gwendolyn and Maverick) -
Chapter 642
Chapter 642 Nico Protecting Summer
The man emanated an imposing aura, and his gaze was filled with rage.
Although he had slightly darker skin, his facial features were exquisite. At the same time, he had a righteous look that only impressive men had.
The pain from his wrist caused Caleb to grit his teeth. While staring at the man in bewilderment, he thundered. "Who are you? Do you have a problem with me disciplining my daughter?" Lucinda was nearby, and she jumped to her husband's defense. "Let go of my husband! This is my house. How dare you come into my house and assault someone? I'll call the police!"
In response, Nico sneered disdainfully, "That's not necessary because I'm a law enforcement officer!"
Caleb and Lucinda looked at each other in shock. Did Summer really bring a policeman with her? What is she up to?
Faced with inquisitive gazes from her father and stepmother, Summer held Nico's arm and uttered in a sweet voice, "Nico, let go of his filthy hand. He does nothing but gamble. If you touch him, you'll only dirty your hands."
Hearing that, Nico narrowed his eyes in warning and loosened his grip on Caleb's wrist at once.
Caleb was caught off guard, and he stumbled backward. Fortunately for him, Lucinda was there to hold him and prevent him from crashing into the door behind him.
Summer then took a wet wipe from her branded bag to wipe Nico's hand with it. It was as though Caleb was nothing but disgusting filth in her eyes.
With a gentle look in his eyes, Nico caressed Summer's face with his rough fingers and asked, "Did they hurt you?"
Summer shook her head. "Now that you're here, Nico, there's nothing they can do to me."
The emergence of her strong backer had definitely bolstered her confidence.
Meanwhile, Lucinda sized up the two well-dressed individuals before her and uttered disdainfully, "Summer, I see that you've brought someone home with you. Are you not introducing him to your dad and me? Where are your manners?"
Caleb was ruminating over the way Summer addressed Nico when he suddenly recalled something.
Is he that man from the Federal Bureau of Investigation? Caleb stared at Nico in fear and disbelief and stammered, "Nico? W-Which Nico are you? Could it be that you're..."
As soon as those words fell, Nico turned around sternly and straightened his back. Due to how much taller he was compared to Caleb, he easily dominated the latter with aura alone.
While holding Summer's hand, Nico stood side by side with her in front of Caleb and Lucinda. "Let me introduce myself. I'm Summer's fiancé, Nico Jenson. Not only am I the newly appointed deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but I'm also the vice president of Jenson Group."
Upon hearing that, Caleb and Lucinda were dumbfounded.
It was their first time meeting someone of that importance, so they were so intimidated that they forgot
how to breathe.
Overwhelmed by jealousy and shock, Lucinda chuckled sheepishly and shot Summer a grumpy look. "Oh, Summer. When did you befriend a man as influential as Mr. Jenson? Why didn't you tell us about him so that we could also bask in the glory of his success?"
"What?" Summer glared at Lucinda and sneered, "If your father and stepmother had given you up for money, would you let them bask in the glory of another's success? You guys aren't worthy." Lucinda's face fell. "How dare you?"
Right then, Caleb held Lucinda back and shot her a meaningful look. Now that a man as impressive as Nico is here, we shouldn't lay a finger on Summer. Since we have such a rich and powerful future son-in- law, I doubt we'll ever have to worry about our debts again. Who knows? We might even get to enjoy our lives as a wealthy family from
now on.
In just a matter of minutes, Caleb had thought about how he could take advantage of Nico.
Counting on the fact he was Summer's father, Caleb straightened his back and put his status as an elder to full use.
While gesturing for Nico to enter the house, Caleb said, "If you don't mind, Mr. Jenson, please come into our humble rented house for a cup of tea and a conversation. Our neighbors are watching, so perhaps it's inappropriate for us to converse out in the open."
The four had caused quite a commotion for several minutes in the corridor, so the neighbors found it hard to turn down a spectacle. In fact, the number of onlookers increased after Nico made his self- introduction.
Nico's gaze darkened as he glanced at the messy and tiny rented unit the married couple was staying in. The next moment, he unhesitatingly rejected the offer by saying, "No thanks. Summer prefers clean and tidy surroundings. Your house is unacceptable, Mr. Rongsler. I don't want Summer to dirty her new skirt. Besides, I'm not a fan of formalities. We should just have a straightforward conversation here and now. By the way, people usually address me as Mr. Nico. I'm having a hard time getting used to the way you address me, Mr. Rongsler."
Caleb had no choice but to smile awkwardly and say, "I see. In that case, we'll do whatever you're comfortable with, Mr. Nico." With that, he turned toward Lucinda and ordered, "Darling, serve our guest a cup of water."
"No need." Summer stopped Lucinda and stated, "Even I think the cups you used before are filthy. How dare you use those filthy cups to serve Nico drinks?"
It's been a year since we last saw each other, yet she showed up suddenly with that sarcastic attitude of hers instead of her obedient behavior back then. Caleb was displeased when he heard that, so he glared at her and reprimanded softly, "Summer! Don't you know you aren't supposed to shun the ones who raised you?"
"Well, my parents were never around to teach me such values. How was I supposed to know any of that?" Summer replied expressionlessly.
Caleb was livid. "Am I dead to you? I was the one who provided for you for almost two decades! How dare you disrespect me just because you found yourself a wealthy man to rely on?"
Wrapping his arm around Summer's waist, Nico uttered. "A child would only be filial if the parents were loving. When I first met Summer, she was abused and as thin as a rake. She was all alone, with no one to rely on. Thus, I think her words make perfect sense."
Caleb's expression turned grim, and he was rendered speechless when he saw how protective Nico was of Summer. At the same time, he was deliberately ignoring the fact that all his neighbors were staring at him with weird looks on their faces.
Right then, Summer got straight to the point and revealed the purpose of her visit again. "I came here today to keep you guys informed. Besides, I'm bringing you two to remove my name from your household registry because I want to sever my relationship with you guys. From now on, neither of you will have anything to do with my life."
In other words, she was preventing the married couple from leeching off her in the future.
Caleb saw red instantly. "You can't do that! If you do that, you'll be an orphan! Everyone's going to make fun of you once you marry into the Jenson family!"
Summer was amused. "I would rather endure that than be known as the child of an indebted alcoholic father with a gambling addiction."
"L..." Caleb had nothing to defend himself with. Frustrated, he glanced at Summer's and Nico's empty hands. I hadn't seen Summer in a year, and she suddenly came back to tell us she was getting engaged. Yet, they didn't even bother to come with expensive gifts. Since she doesn't even care about formalities, it's obvious that she's determined to cut all ties with us after her engagement.
Lucinda, who had been keeping mum, had the same thing in mind. She then inched toward Caleb and whispered, "Hubby, do you see how your daughter is disregarding and shunning us? I bet they're not ever going to give us an engagement gift."
Caleb's expression became even more solemn after that. How dare they refuse to give us an engagement gift when she has found herself such a rich fiance?
