Wooing My ex-wife (Gwendolyn and Maverick) -
Chapter 753 Rage
Chapter 753 Rage
It was time for all of them to return home.
Gwendolyn took Zendaya from Charles, and the family of four got into their car and left the oceanarium.
As soon as the car disappeared from sight, Charles turned to Whitney and asked, "I saw you talking to Gwen. What were you two chatting about?"
"Oh, we were talking about you and me," she replied candidly, observing his reaction.
Charles' expression remained unchanged, his sapphire eyes revealing nothing.
"What did you say?"
Seeing how much he cared about Gwendolyn's opinion, Whitney felt rather uneasy. She ignored his question, slid into the passenger seat of his car, and waited quietly for him to start driving.
Charles ignited the engine and maneuvered his way out of the oceanarium. "Why aren't you answering me?" he continued pressing for an answer.
"Is it so important for you to know?" Whitney had a serious look on her face.
"Of course it's important," he replied instantly, making Whitney's heart sink even further. "If you don't tell me, how will I know how you will play the role of my wife in front of the Newtons in the future? How will I know whether this agreement between us can work?"
"Well, I told her about how we first met in Tayhaven and were reunited in Chanaea. We also talked about our last date. She seems to know you very well. She had a lot of nice things to say about you. She hoped that our relationship would grow. That's all. Are you happy now?"
Charles arched his eyebrows. He seemed to be in a good mood.
The thought of Gwendolyn praising him pleased him.
However, Whitney's attitude upset him. "What's with your tone? You were just fine before we got to the oceanarium. Now you sound as if someone's insulted your entire family!" "Maybe it's because I'm having my period soon."
A woman's mood swings during her period was an easy excuse for Whitney to explain her attitude.
Embarrassed by her explanation, Charles dropped the topic and focused on driving instead.
The sky was pitch-black and devoid of any stars. Even the moon was hidden behind the clouds.
However, the roads were brightly illuminated by the street lights.
Both of them remained silent for the rest of the drive, lost in their own thoughts.
After a while, Whitney finally broke the silence and asked, "Gwendolyn is your childhood friend who you had a special relationship with before, right?"
Charles' face immediately turned cold as if she had overstepped his boundaries.
"Stop prying into my personal life. All you need to do this year is play the role of Mrs. Newton in front of my family."
Screech!
The tires squealed in protest as Charles stopped the car abruptly.
Whitney's body was flung forward. Only her seatbelt stopped her from crashing into the windscreen.
Shaken and scared, she turned to look at Charles, confused by the sudden stop.
Why did he suddenly stop?
Still wearing an icy look, Charles unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned over to Whitney.
"Mr. Newton!"
Charles gripped her chin roughly and forced her to meet his eyes.
"We are just a couple with a secret marriage contract. Don't forget your place," he warned her, no longer concealing his cruel thoughts. "You'd better behave yourself and stop asking about my past. If I replace out that you're digging into my past and talking nonsense to Gwen, I'll show you who I truly am."
The manic look in Charles' eyes terrified Whitney.
Her entire body was shaking in fear.
She had never seen this side of Charles before.
So, it was all an act for his beloved...
Whitney smiled bitterly and said with some difficulty, "Do you really think I'm the kind of woman who would stir up trouble? Do you really love her that much? Would you really continue to bury that feeling deep in your heart and sacrifice yourself for her even if she's someone else's wife now?"
The rage in Charles' eyes intensified.
"Did you not understand what I've just said, Whitney? Do not mention Gwendolyn's name ever again. Whatever goes on between me and her is none of your concern."
Charles squeezed her jaw painfully as if punishing her for her disobedience.
Whitney's face was flushed red from the pain.
He's reacting so terribly just because I asked him some sensitive questions. Next time, will he really strangle me?
This violent side of Charles frightened Whitney.
"I-I'm sorry!"
Charles pulled his hand away once he had heard her apology. He sat back in his seat with a smug, satisfied look on his face.
Whitney rubbed her bruised jaw and tried to calm her hammering heartbeat.
The silence in the car was palpable.
Whitney shifted her body away from Charles and leaned closer to the car door.
Charles stepped on the gas pedal and continued their drive with a blank expression. The car engine roared angrily as Charles pushed it to its limit.
Whitney held on to the handle in fear and bit her lip to stop herself from crying out.
He really loves Gwendolyn so much that the mere mention of her name can make him angry.
Whitney struggled to hold back her tears. She wanted to run far away from Charles. There was nothing left in him for her.
Whitney leaped out of the car the moment it stopped in front of the Newton residence.
Her legs were still shaking from his reckless driving, and she could not stand properly. She tripped and fell to the ground, her entire body still trembling.
Charles walked over to her and offered her his hand. He seemed to be back to his usual gentlemanly self. Whitney pushed his hand away. She did not even dare to look him in the eyes. "It's fine. I can walk by myself." Charles withdrew his hand and said nothing. His eyes narrowed slightly at the sight of the bruise on her jawline.
Whitney had pale and delicate skin, and although he did not use much force, noticeable purple marks had bloomed on her skin. "Go back to the bedroom and get a scarf to cover up those bruises."
Whitney covered her neck with her hands and nodded. She dragged her still-trembling legs upstairs and headed to their room.
Charles' gaze did not linger on her for long. He entered the villa and headed straight for the dining room.
Lucas had important business to attend to at this company that night and had come back late, so the siblings were eating together again.
When she saw Charles alone, Jasmine asked, "Charles, why is it just you? Where's Whitney?"
"She went upstairs to get changed. She'll be down soon," he replied naturally. Gone was the violent, ill-tempered man that was in the car earlier. "I didn't know you were so close to Whitney." "She may be your wife, but she's my friend!" Jasmine said playfully.
