Wooing My ex-wife (Gwendolyn and Maverick) -
Chapter 765 Rushing Down The Slope
Chapter 765 Rushing Down The Slope
Zendaya was still in Charles' car, and there was no confirmation of Gwendolyn's situation yet. Cedrick was not going to say a word about it, nor was he going to let Zendaya head to the dangerous Orchidbay Tunnel.
In a calm voice, he said, "She's fine. I'm going to pick her up. I don't want her to get anxious from waiting, so I drove a little faster than usual. You should take Zendy to the lab to rendezvous with Nico and Benny first. Otherwise, the four squadrons of military vehicles behind you will be too eye-catching and will affect the other vehicles around us."
Wisely, Charles did not press on the matter. "Understood."
After the call ended, Cedrick soon noticed that no cars were after his from the rearview mirror. It was likely that Charles had gotten off at the nearest expressway to change his destination to the lab. Stepping onto the accelerator, Cedrick sped his way to Orchidbay Tunnel.
Please be fine. Please...
His eyes were bloodshot as he repeated that again and again in an attempt to calm himself down.
Raindrops silently pattered on his car window, seemingly reflecting the angry roars he wished he could voice out loud.
The drizzle from the gloomy sky grew heavier and heavier.
In just eight minutes, Cedrick's vehicle arrived at the scene in Orchidbay Tunnel.
Two trucks had turned over, so the traffic was congested. Traffic police had already set up a cordon so that the other vehicles could bypass the current lane to avoid worsening the accident site. When Cedrick arrived, the entire tunnel was covered in dust.
The fire truck, the ambulance, and the traffic police were all there.
A moment later, Swain arrived with the police.
"Boss, I've already asked around for the details. There is a total of eleven victims in this accident. The two truck drivers passed away on the spot, and there were two other drivers who the medical staff were unable to save. Four have sustained severe injuries, and two have sustained light injuries. There's a child too, but they've only sustained a little scratch because they had been protected well during the accident. There aren't any signs of Mrs. Jenson."
Cedrick dug his fingers deep into his palms and glared at Swain with bright red eyes. "Gwendolyn's signal disappeared in this tunnel. This entire place has been sealed off, and yet, I neither see her nor the Jenson family's car. Tell me, where can she possibly be?"
Swain's heart lurched, and he was frightened in stillness by his anger.
"Calm down, Boss. This might be good news. Seeing no signs of Mrs. Jenson or her car means that she might not have gotten hurt. At the very least, she's currently in no mortal danger. I've brought a troop of Federal Bureau of Investigation's soldiers over, and they're currently scouring everywhere near Orchidbay Tunnel."
Cedrick took in a deep breath and was silent for a long time.
Indeed, no news was good news.
At the very least, Gwendolyn had nothing to do with the major traffic accident.
But I can't reach her on the phone or track her GPS signal. What's interfering with her devices?
Cedrick's heart had sunken deep in his stomach at his wife's disappearance. He could not calm down at all.
After leaving Swain to handle the accident site, Cedrick turned and went back into his car, planning to make a trip around Orchidbay Tunnel to replace suspicious spots.
Swain tried to convince him otherwise. "Boss, it's raining heavily outside, and it's only getting heavier. Don't go. I'm sure someone will return with Mrs. Jenson's news soon." Cedrick whipped his head around and uttered, "I hope you'll be equally calm when I make you lose contact with your loved one."
Hearing that, Swain paled drastically, a wave of shame washing over him.
"Sorry, Boss. I'll come with you to look for Mrs. Jenson instead," Swain muttered weakly before moving toward the front passenger seat.
Cedrick rolled his eyes at him. "Handle the situation here. Contact me if anything happens."
"There's no need for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to handle the situation here. It's just a massive traffic accident resulting from tailgating."
Cedrick shot him a cold look. "Two truck drivers have died on the spot, and yet the tailgated driver didn't die as quickly. You're telling me that this is just a traffic accident?"
A truck was large in size, and its driver would be at lesser risk of fatal injuries in a tailgating accident. Yet, the truck drivers died earlier than the smaller vehicle drivers. It was indeed strange.
Swain stiffened and soon realized what Cedrick was talking about.
"Got it, Boss."
With that said, Swain returned to the cordoned-off area.
Meanwhile, Cedrick sped off from Orchidbay Tunnel.
Unable to know whether or not Gwendolyn was safe was making terror hold tightly onto him.
Outside the tunnel, it was still raining.
The sound of the raindrops on the windows only served to irritate Cedrick further.
He was still trying to call Gwendolyn again and again, but only the gentle voice of a customer service officer answered him, reminding him that Gwendolyn's signal was too weak and not within the service area -that he should call her later.
It's raining so heavily. Where can Gwenny possibly go?
Cedrick drove around the areas near Orchidbay Tunnel, but even half an hour later, his search remained fruitless.
The sky was still gloomy, and it seemed like the sun was going to set. At night, it would be far tougher to look for a person.
Staring out of the blurry window, Cedrick found himself getting more and more frustrated.
Right then, a call came. He snatched his phone.
But it was Swain, not Gwendolyn.
The second the call connected, Swain yelled, "Boss, we found Mrs. Jenson's car! It's in a small canyon a hundred meters ahead of Bluebay Tunnel! Team Ten's soldiers just found signs of a run off the road accident and the signs of a car tumbling down the slope. They followed the signs and found Mrs. Jenson's car, but—”
Before Swain could finish, Cedrick had already ended the call and slammed his foot against the accelerator, the screeching sounds of his tires echoing in the area.
Signs of an accident and a car tumbling down the slope into the canyon... Gwendolyn's car must have gone down the slope.
It was close to impossible for Cedrick to take in any air into his lungs at the moment.
As tears welled up in his eyes, he told himself repeatedly that Gwendolyn was going to be fine-that her car was bought for its high safety index and that she was not going to die.
Cedrick narrowed his eyes when his tears threatened to fall. Gripping the steering wheel, he slammed his car into the guard rails of the road in the direction of where Swain had told him. The armored vehicle rushed down the slope.
"Boss!" Swain screamed, running after Cedrick and stumbling down the slope. The soil was slippery in the rain, but that was not Swain's concern at all. All he knew was that he had to run after Cedrick's vehicle "What is he doing? I shouldn't have told him about this! What am I going to do if anything happens to him?" Swain screamed as he continued sliding down the slope, on the verge of tears.
Cedrick's vehicle continued bolting down the slope at a terrifying speed, almost as if Cedrick had lost control of the vehicle.
Yet, Cedrick was still stepping onto the accelerator. With a quick spin of his steering wheel, he stopped the vehicle from flipping and slammed into a tree in the canyon.
The old and sturdy tree stopped his vehicle, but the front part of the car was completely crushed. The windows had shattered, and the airbags deployed.
Cedrick turned away, but the glass still scraped his face. He was safe despite the extreme method he had used to get to the bottom of the canyon. The rain was still pouring, and the broken windshield could not stop the water from entering the car.
Cedrick was still gripping the steering wheel, his knuckles white. The rain dripped on the back of his hand, making his skin look even paler.
In the meantime, Swain managed to get to the bottom of the canyon alive, stopping himself with a tree as well.
Then, he scrambled over, only to replace Cedrick sitting in his seat in a daze.
"Boss, are you okay? Please don't scare me like this..."
Cedrick shakily let out an exhale and mumbled under his breath, "Gwenny's vehicle is as good as mine. If I'm fine, I'm sure she is too." For a long while, Swain was speechless.
He did this to replace out the mortality rate of going off-road in the vehicle?
"Boss, you hung up on me before I could finish my sentence. Our men have found Mrs. Jenson's car, but... we couldn't replace her."
