Chapter 231

After a brief acknowledgement, Ruben hurried away.

Ethan remained standing by the window as he repeatedly looked through his contact list. Whom shouldhe call?

If not for Sebastian, there would be many people he could contact. Perhaps he could have saved hismother by overlooking his morals and integrity just once.

However, Sebastian was involved in the case. As long as the evidence was true, no one would dareinterfere with the case when Sebastian and the Hart Family were keeping an eye on it.

For the first time in his life, he felt powerless.

How he wished he could save his mother, but he was useless.

He did not know how long he stood there in the darkness with his phone in his hand, but soon he heardthe sirens of a police car before one pulled up into the yard.

Through the window, he watched as his mother was escorted out of the car with handcuffs around herwrists.

Before he could think about his actions, he was charging straight out of the station.

Holly spotted him before he got close to her. She struggled hard against the policeman escorting her asshe cried out, "Ethan, save me! You have to save me!"

From the moment she saw the police appear, she had been crying. Her eyes were swollen by now.

She had never felt so afraid before.

Going to prison was even more terrifying than the idea of divorcing George.

She never thought she would be connected to prison in any way.

Ethan stopped before her, at a loss for words, and did not know what to do next.

The policeman escorting Holly pushed him to the side, and he could do nothing but watch as she wasforced past him toward the station by the police.

"Ethan, please! Save me!" She desperately shouted, turning back to look at him. "I don't want to go toprison. I am innocent! You have to save me!"

He followed the group to the door of the interrogation room, where the police pushed her in.

"Mr. Taylor, this is really bad," reported Ruben as he came running over in a hurry. "The police askedScott if your mother knew what he was going to do with the money, and he said yes."

"Is he mad?" Ethan shouted in a whisper. "How would it help him to drag my mother into this? Has shenot been good to him? Why is he doing this to her?"

"He..." Ruben let out a bitter chuckle. "I hear that he's drunk..."

"Drunk?" Ethan was trembling with fury. "Are they thinking he's spilling the beans because he's drunk?"After a brief acknowledgement, Ruben hurried away.

Ethan remained standing by the window as he repeatedly looked through his contact list. Whom shouldhe call?

Ruben nodded. "Yes."

"Can a drunken confession be used as testimony?" Ethan's vision was going hazy with shock. "Can hechange his testimony after he sobers up?"

"There's no use." Ruben shook his head. "Even the driver confessed to being paid by Scott to kill theold man, and that Scott had also arranged for him and his wife to migrate overseas to be with theirdaughter. However, he did not have a good time there. His daughter soon passed away, while his wifedivorced him and returned here. He was there all alone, wasting his life away. When the Harts broughthim back, he told the police everything. He sobbed and wailed as he cried about how guilty he was andhow he should not have gotten greedy. He told them every detail about how Scott bribed him. Itmatched Scott's testimony. Hence, there is no way Scott can change his testimony after sobering up."

"Useless! They are all trash! Failures!" Ethan slammed his fist against a wall. "What about my mother?Has she ever met the driver?"

"Well, no." Ruben let out a sad sigh. "However, she was careless enough to transfer the money to Scottinstead of giving him cash. When the bank opens tomorrow, the police will know everything."

He looked at Ethan and feebly said, "You have to be prepared..."

Ethan's eyes slid shut in despair.

He knew what Ruben wanted him to be prepared for.

Holly could not escape unscathed this time.

She was doted on her entire life and raised in luxury. She had never suffered once in her life, yet shewas going to jail.

His heart ached when he recalled just how caring and gentle she was when raising him.

No.

He could not give up just yet.

As her son, he could not just stand idly as she was sent to prison. Even if it was a one-in-a-millionchance, he had to do his best to rescue his mother.

He took a deep breath and called Madeline.

The number was unavailable.

When he later looked at the time, he realized it was well past midnight.

Logically speaking, he should contact Madeline in the morning. However, his emotions overwhelmedhim so much that he could not wait another second longer.

His car sped away from the police station toward Sebastian and Madeline's home.

In fact, he was driving so fast that he arrived at his destination in less than twenty minutes.

He had thought he would be able to see Madeline as long as he was at her home, but the guardsrefused to let him in since Sebastian and Madeline were both asleep.

No matter what he said or offered, the guards resolutely kept him out.

He was panicking hard, but there was nothing he could do. Time slowly ticked past, and the sun beganto rise.

Madeline woke up at seven, as she usually would. She would then lead her children downstairs andhave breakfast with them before sending them off to school.

That morning, when she descended the stairs, Zacharias was waiting for her with a message. "Mrs.Hart, Ethan Taylor of Taylor Corporation is here. The guards said he arrived around one o'clock lastnight and has been waiting outside the gates since then. He wishes to see you."

She was stunned. "Let him in."

"Do it after twenty minutes," Sebastian called out from the dining room doorway.

Zacharias acknowledged the order and left without asking any questions.

"Why would you make him wait twenty more minutes?" she asked Sebastian as she walked over tohim.

"It's because breakfast is ready," Quincy said.

"Yes, Mom! Let us have breakfast first. We can talk to Uncle Ethan afterward!" Joel grabbed her handand stared up at her with his cute eyes and chubby cheeks. "If we let him in now, you won't havebreakfast. Dad is only making Uncle Ethan wait so that you can enjoy your breakfast. He is so sweet!Dad must surely be the best man in the world!"

Madeline was rendered speechless.

It was early in the morning, yet her sons were already heaping flattery on Sebastian.

Sebastian shook his head with a smile and stroked his sons' heads. "It looks like my genes are stillstronger," Sebastian said in a teasing manner. "My sons are just like me!"

She stared at him, confused.

"He's saying that we're smart," explained Quincy.

"You're smart too, Mom! It's just that Dad is smarter." Joel giggled. "It's not like girls need to be supersmart anyway. I think girls are just fine if they're pretty and have a good heart, just like you. After all, you're not just beautiful and kind, but you are also a good fighter and a great cook. You get full pointsand bonuses in my heart. You are the best woman in the whole world, Mom!"

She didn't even know how to respond to that statement.
