Chapter 267

However, Madeline and Leigh weren't comfortable with the idea of Belle going anywhere alone, for theelderly woman was too feeble. She had come in search of her second son and his wife withindignation, which meant that she wouldn't be in high spirits. If she got upset or worked up, hercondition would worsen. As such, Madeline and Leigh were worried about letting the young and the oldsearch for Brian and Rachael.

After some deliberation, Madeline asked tentatively, "Mrs. Carter, can Leigh and I tag along? We don'tfeel comfortable letting you go on your own when you're weak like this."

"Yeah." Leigh nodded in agreement.

At that, Alex held his grandmother's hand and looked up at her. "Grandma, please let Miss Madelineand Miss Leigh help us."

Belle's condition had the little boy worried. If he could, he wished to stay in Sanguine Mountain with hisgrandmother, but she didn't want to.

Belle said she hadn't seen her son for a long time, and she missed him very much. Since Brianwouldn't come to her, she would just go to him.

In the past, Belle couldn't come to Dusktown on her own, but she was fortunate to receive the Harts'help now. As such, she had to use this opportunity to come and replace Brian, or she wouldn't even beable to see him one last time before she closed her eyes forever.

Alex had a nagging feeling that his grandmother wasn't telling the truth. She hadn't come because shemissed his father. However, his grandmother was obstinate, and no matter how he cried and begged,

she insisted on seeing Brian, or she wouldn't be able to rest in peace. Left with no choice, he couldonly come to Dusktown with her.

She wanted to see Brian now, but for some reason, Alex felt apprehensive with a strong sense offoreboding. He was in trepidation, and the feeling pressed him to do something. Hence, he wasimmediately tempted when Madeline and Leigh suggested going with them.

Belle's condition made him feel hopeless and helpless, and at this moment, his only hope wasMadeline and Leigh. He then begged his grandmother to let Madeline and Leigh follow along.

In actuality, Belle wanted Madeline and Leigh to tag along and be witnesses. If it were just her andAlex, an elderly woman and a child, they could only suffer in silence when they were bullied sinceDusktown wasn't her turf.

If no one was willing to help her, she could only depend on Brian and Rachael's conscience. However, did the couple have such a thing in them?! If they did, they wouldn't even think about ruining herbeloved grandson.

They were even lesser than beasts, existences without an ounce of conscience in them.

However, this was a family affair, and only their family could resolve it. Any wise man wouldn't want todrag themselves into another person's family affairs, after all.

Madeline and Leigh were sweet young women. She didn't want to trouble the two or let them get stuckin a difficult position. Belle didn't say anything even if she wanted their help, but since Madeline andLeigh offered, coupled with the fact that Alex was looking pleadingly at her, she changed her mind.

With that, she turned to Madeline. "Maddie, Alex told me you have a law firm and that you acceptcommissions. How about this? I'll hire you to look after Alex and me. I'll pay you once I get the moneyfrom my son."

Madeline and Leigh had to have a justifiable identity if they were to follow her, an old hag, or peoplewould only reprimand them for being busybodies.

"It's the least we should do, Mrs. Carter," Madeline said. "Alex is Aldo and Buddy's friend, and he evenhelped the twins in the past. It's only right that we help you as well."

"Well, either you accept my commission or Alex and I will just go ourselves," said Belle, leaving noroom for negotiation.

Belle was an obstinate elderly lady, and no one could change her mind easily. Madeline resigned atthat and nodded. "Alright, I'll accept your commission."

Either way, her law firm would only earn a profit if they took up cases from the rich. As for the commonfolks, especially those with financial difficulties, she would usually give them a good discount. Once thisissue was settled, she would just accept a token charge from Belle, then repay it using other means viaAlex later.

To be honest, as much as she didn't want to accept Belle's money, she was pleased with the elderlywoman's attitude; ever since taking over Oasis Law Office, she had developed a hatred for ungratefulpeople.

Some people would gradually take her help for granted. Madeline took pity on many of her clients since

they were financially troubled and would deliberately exempt some of the fees for them. They mighthave been appreciative in the beginning, but with time, they would push their luck and make even moreoutrageous demands.

Madeline had met people like this one too many times, and every time she did, she would shoo themaway without hesitation and never accept their cases again. Even if they regretted their actions laterand begged her on bended knees in front of her law firm, she would turn a blind eye to it.

There were a lot of people who needed help in this world, and she would rather help those who weregrateful instead of heartless fiends.

Because of Alex, she had always respected Belle and would take extra care of the elderly woman.Despite so, Belle never took Madeline's respect and care for granted. Instead, she was grateful andalways acted courteously toward them, seeing them as her savior.

Only people like Belle were worthy of her help.

Madeline never thought of herself as Mother Mary. Despite not asking for anything in return for herhelp, she only hoped that they could remember her kindness and pay it forward when the time came.Only then would the world be a better place.

Before heading to the Carter Residence, Leigh gave Belle a full body checkup and had her swallowsome preventive pills. She also exhorted the elderly woman to keep calm and not get upset.

Though Belle promised with a smile, she knew she wouldn't be able to do so.

With how shameless Rachael was, she wouldn't be able to get anything peacefully. It was only by being

even more shameless than that woman could she get enough money for Alex to use until he reachedadulthood.

Belle knew her condition all too well, and she hadn't planned to return to Sanguine Mountain alive aftercoming to Dusktown.

Since she already had one foot in the grave, her only wish now was to ensure her dear grandson'sfuture. As long as Alex could have a decent life after her passing, she would gladly follow the GrimReaper after that.

When they arrived at Carter Residence, Alex rang the doorbell, and a servant answered it. "You'reback…" The servant was stumped upon seeing Alex.

"Why did you bring a guest with you?" The servant frowned with displeasure after taking a look at theperson standing behind Alex. "You've become more and more imprudent. You know well Mrs. Carterdoesn't like noises. How can you simply bring anyone home?"

At that, Belle tightened her grip on Alex and asked indifferently, "Alex, who is this?"

"This is the nanny, Grandma," answered the boy.

"Nanny?" Belle sneered as she sized up the woman at the doorway. "Well, I have a good sense of thisbig city's propriety now. Who'd have thought a nanny could be bold enough to reproach the person sheserves for bringing a guest home? The nannies in Dusktown sure have high authority."
