Bella:
"You've got to be kidding me," I said to my mother and then attempted to walk away, but she grabbed my hand roughly.
"You will leave with Ryder right now because the clothes for the occasion have been provided and packed. I stayed up all night doing that," Mother said, and my brows wrinkled as I glared at Alpha Fred, who tried not to look at me.
"You won't say anything? What have I done to deserve this forced trip?" I asked, yanking my hands away from my mother and shifting to Alpha Fred's view, who was avoiding meeting my eyes.
He sighed.
"Ryder has something important to attend, and I need you there because you are the only one that he listens to at this moment," he said, and I rolled my eyes with a scoff. "He is my stepbrother and a mate he barely desires, plus he has a girlfriend who..."
"Who has only been nothing but chaotic in his life. This is the best Ryder has been since..." He paused to take in the lump in his throat. "I split up with his mum," he finished, and I kept mute.
His words gave me no insight into what was happening, but I knew there was an occasion, which I couldn't tell. Funeral? Wedding? I couldn't.
"So, please," he said, reaching for my hand, which caused me to force a smile onto my lips.
I was going to do it for him because he had been one of the few reasonable people in my life since I left the Rune pack.
"Your wish is my command, Alpha." I gave a curt bow, and then I turned around, walking towards the fleet of cars lined up for the trip.
I got into the car Ryder was in, and then I threw my head back, shutting my eyes. Ryder's POV:
Once more, I found myself cursing silently for what I had done. I couldn't tell what it was inside of me, but the thoughts of her were the only thing that could get me to sleep on a cold, rocky mountain ground. She had so much power over me, which I kind of hated because how could her thoughts alone give me peace?
I could swear I didn't love her, but why did I want her close? My mind was conflicted, and that was why I selfishly requested that she come with me on this trip. So selfish that I made her leave her other mates because I wanted her to myself. She was my confidant, which made no sense, given that I had done a lot of things to her since we were kids.
As she sat close to me with her eyes shut and head thrown back, I could tell she hated what was happening, and I wanted to console her for what I had just put her through, but I was scared.
'Do it,' the voice in my head kept echoing, and when I couldn't take it anymore, I reached for her hand.
Her soft, warm, and tiny hands always made me feel safe each time I had it in mine. This was something I had never gotten from being with Fae.
"Bella," I called out, and she turned her head towards me, opening her eyes. As those beautiful eyes stared at me, all I could think of was how her lips would taste; Finn was one lucky bastard, and even if I was angry, I still couldn't help but applaud him because we all thought it would be Kai that would claim those juicy lips.
"Is there a problem?" she asked, slipping her hand away from mine with an eyebrow raised. This was all it took to withdraw me from my daydream.
"I'm sorry that you had to come on this trip with me," I started, and she sighed, sitting up straight.
"It is fine. My mother is a handful, but I like your father, and I would do whatever he asks if that will make him happy," she said, and then she leaned back again.
There was a moment of silence between us, which kept pricking my soul. My heart carried a heavy burden that I wanted to let out. I needed her to know what I felt because of the peace it would bring me. Last night, that hug was all I needed.
"My father banished my mother from the pack when I was about three years old, and she sought refuge in the Dusk pack. I never understood why, and mother hid it from me. I thought father had hurt her so much, but yesterday..." I paused, taking steady breaths to hold down the heaviness in my throat.
She had seen me cry, and I didn't want that to happen again.
"Yesterday, my mother called to tell me she was getting married, and worse, I have a brother who is about fourteen years old. Now I know why father banished her. She was pregnant, and not just because your mother 'stole' my father from her, like she always..."
"Ryder," Bella grabbed my hand, cutting me short.
I looked up to see her beautiful eyes staring right at me, which caused my heart to loosen up, as I felt like a huge stone had been cast away from it. I grabbed her and pulled her into a hug, holding her tight, and just like that, the feeling of peace draped
over me.
**
Shortly we arrived at the Dusk pack, and at the house of the Beta, my mother's lover whom she had betrayed my father with.
As the car came to a halt in front of the castle-like structure, I took a deep breath, pressing hard on Bella's hand, causing her to hold mine.
"You will be fine," she said, and I nodded.
The moment the chauffeur opened the door for me, the front door swung open, and my mother rushed out the door. She was like me, tall with beautiful black eyes.
"Baby," she said in a soft tone, pulling me into a hug, which was rather cold than warm. I struggled to pull away from her as I peered behind her to see a boy standing by the door, leaning against it with his head by the post and his arms crossed.
The bastard!
Bella stepped out of the car at once, and I saw my mother's face contort. "You didn't tell me you had company," Mother said, and I shrugged.
"I am pretty sure my stepfather has enough and extra tables for his guest. It took him fourteen years to decide to put a ring on it, so he must have planned properly." When I said this, she chuckled, giving me a gentle nudge on my shoulder, but my face was void of a smile.
"I meant space. We only prepared one room for you, and then for the escorts, so if your friend doesn't mind, she can share with you," she said, and then she sized Bella up. "She looks familiar. Is she your girlfriend?"
I was angry, but that question managed to draw out a red spot on my cheeks.
"Not at all. She is my mate and my stepsister, and daughter of Evelyn Ashcroft."
I watched the expression on her face go sour, and I grabbed Bella, walking towards the house.
"Hi, I'm..."
"Save it," I said to the boy, not caring about his existence.
When we got into the large house, I was taken aback by the familiar flowery scent. The nostalgia from being three rushed in, but I ignored it, hurriedly following the maid to the room which was laid out for me. When we got into it, I saw that there was only a bed.
"It's okay, we will share," Bella said, walking into the room.
She sat down on the bed while I threw myself on it. Suddenly, my phone beeped, and I took it out to see a message from Kai.
"We know what you are up to, Ryder. Finn's might have been a mistake, but yours isn't, and you better enjoy it while it lasts."
I groaned and tossed the phone away, shutting my eyes against the world.
