5 Puppies For The Alpha -
Chapter 13
Dante put the document down on the table and ran his hand over his head, uselessly brushing back the wavy strands of hair that fell over his face. He scrunched up the bridge of his nose and Dimitri, sitting in front of him, looked at him worriedly.
-Why don’t you go rest, you look exhausted.
The alpha shook his head and resumed reading.
-There are too many things I have to do to sleep right now,” he replied, taking a deep breath to try to dispel his tiredness.
-Two or three hours won’t make a difference,” his twin insisted, sensing the exhaustion of his peer.
-I’ll do it later, when I go to see him, after I give him b***d I can sleep for a couple of hours,” he organised his schedule for the day.
-Being a workaholic will kill you one day,” Dimitri said unconvinced.
-If it hasn’t so far, I doubt it will in the future,” the alpha felt work was a vital necessity in his existence.
-Whatever you say, in the end it’s a hopeless case to argue with you,” Dimitri took a sip of his drink, “Well, do you like it?
-Who?” He looked at him in confusion.
-Who’s it going to be? Your new acquisition-it sounded logical, who else would he be talking about.
Dante lowered the document in front of his face, he hated it when his twin came up with abstract comments.
-And Dmitri hated how slow his counterpart could be with some things.
-The wolf you have in a bed right now, in one of our chambers, remember? Do you like it?” he used the humour that so unnerved his serious twin.
-Don’t you think it’s too soon to have that question, I don’t even know his name,” he replied annoyed.
-At least you can have an idea, in the end you wanted him to be the change because of your intervention,” he continued using the finest logic to the alpha’s exasperation.
-I don’t know Dimitri,” he sighed, “Why do you think we don’t have someone in the position of queen by now? I said I will never be with someone who is not useful for the position. I don’t need someone who spends all day in front of the mirror, wasting time just thinking about how to look pretty or desirable for me, instead of helping me with all the pack’s concerns.
-You’re too radical.
-This is not a puppy story,” she remembered when their mother read them one of their favourite fantasy books when they were young. Where there was the Moon Goddess, a mystic who gave each wolf a half that completed his soul. Life would be wonderful if fantasy were real, but they were wilder and reality was much crueler. It had its positive side though, if you looked at it with an open mind, you were able to be with whoever you wanted without anyone controlling your future and Dante hated anyone pulling the strings of his life, that’s what he was for.
-So what are you going to do with him and his puppies,” he questioned stubbornly.
-I’ll look into that when I’ve sorted out everything I have pending and his health is better. My image and that of the pack would be tarnished if I simply kicked him out of the manor after I made a trade,” he hoped to end the tiresome talk.
Dimitri was about to answer him when the door opened to reveal a light-haired, hazel-eyed wolf with several documents in his hands.
-Good time, Falco, for more papers,” his alpha said wryly.
-Excuse me, these are some we found in the other pack’s mansion, and I think you’ll replace them interesting,” he said, not understanding the leader’s ironic tone.
Interest was piqued in the twin wolves and they picked them up and read them avidly.
Dante was fascinated when he came to one of the sheets with a huge family tree, accompanied by a dossier that apparently had the life of each of the members.
The name of the family was Sans and it started from the first generation, with the word omega standing out in most of the members. Of the approximate 80 people, more than three quarters were omegas who stood out in the central lineage; those who did not, only showed their name, but not their relationship with other members of the family.
He followed with his gaze, too interested for his taste, when he reached the end where a part of the paper was torn leaving only one name on the right. A name he recognised. It had not been a coincidence. That was the family tree of the Pack’s alpha, uncle of the wolf in his custody. But the rest of the generational family was missing, it had been uprooted. That seemed strange to him, neither were his documents.
-Alpha, I also come to inform you that the new members have already been placed in the residence that was uninhabited, we have prepared the minimum conditions, but we will need a few days to prepare the different houses with the necessary things,” informed the beta.
-Do you have food and water,” he said. He didn’t want any unpleasant situations in the herd that was now his.
-Yes, although there are some of our wolves who are not happy with the situation, it has all been very quick,” he was worried.
-Don’t worry beta, I took care of it,” he clarified, after all the decision to take the other pack under his coat was his; now he had to deal with the consequences.
We had to lock up some non-conforming males. Let’s just say they are out of control and won’t come to their senses, they seem wilder than usual and three of them are not able to come back from their animal aspect. The pack is in very bad shape, there are she-wolves waiting for cubs without care, little ones without family and much more,” he said dismayed by the situation of the weaker ones. What the hell was the alpha of the pack, and his beta doing all damn day?
-Ask for the necessary help, say it’s my order, and report to me anyone who won’t cooperate, it’s not their fault that their alpha has been irresponsible,” he was adamant, he was not going to admit insubordination.
Falco bowed before leaving.
-This is worse than I imagined, I’ll go see our mother to see if she has any of the dead-raising concoctions he makes,” Dimitri stood up and left as well.
The typical excuse he used to visit his parents, a pair of male wolves who had gone to live on the edge of the pack, oblivious to any problems especially since the one they called their mother was not your average wolf, but one with a peculiar anomaly that had allowed her to bring them into the world. He wished he had time off to visit them too, he missed the talks with his father and his mother’s seasoning.
Dante opened the door to the room where the omega was resting, letting out a young wolf who bowed his head.
-Alpha,” he looked at him with respect.
-Did you take care of him, Bastian,” he said, lowering his voice, not wanting to disturb the patient.
-Yes, I changed the bandages and cleaned his body; I also put a new cloth over his eyes as the doctor indicated,” informed the wolf cub, who couldn’t get over his astonishment at so much deterioration and mistreatment.
-Thank you, you may go,” he dismissed his beta’s current husband and took off his shirt before sitting down on the bed.
The sleeping wolf looked better after two days of consuming his b***d. The colour of his skin was returning and some wounds were closing more easily, but the scars would remain there as a reminder of what had happened. He g*****d inwardly. No one should have to go through that.
Carefully he slipped an arm under the nape of his neck and drew him in, biting his wrist and bringing it to his lips letting the carmine liquid enter him. It was becoming a habit now; one he didn’t dislike.
After what seemed like a long time he opened his eyes again. His body was not fighting against itself this time, it hurt, but it was bearable. He removed what felt like a piece of cloth over his eyes and tried to sit up slowly to feel the other side of the warm bed but his vision was so blurred he could barely make out the colour of the sheet.
He heard a rustling in the distance accompanied by a faint scent he could now define that made his hair stand on end. ALPHA. There was an alpha, he didn’t know if it was near or far, with his senses so impaired, despite feeling stronger, it was impossible to tell. But one thing he was sure of, an alpha was there and it would surely hurt him, and he couldn’t allow that again.
Everything turned red around him and he let his conscience burn away, giving way to the wildest inside him and did what his father taught him to do best.
Dante was just finishing talking to Falco at the door about final preparations when his alarms went off.
He only had time for one thing.
To turn before he felt the dark wolf’s fangs dig into the skin of his neck until they tore.
