5 Puppies For The Alpha -
Chapter 29
One of the guards rushed into the cell with an exasperated expression on his face.
-Alpha, Commander, the wolves, the wolves, the wolves,” he struggled to articulate, “all of a sudden they froze, their eyes changed colour and they became unconscious,” he looked from one to the other without explanation.
Dante looked at his brother who couldn’t come out of the same impression. In his arms Lukyan could barely move, he had exhausted the last bit of energy he had left and would soon be accompanying his companions to a well-deserved sleep, but he didn’t want to. He shook his head in an attempt to wake himself up.
The alpha sensed the movement and turned his attention to him.
-Later, I want you to explain in detail what you did, now rest,” she brushed back the strands of hair that fell over his face.
He denied.
-I won’t do it,” his eyes closed and then opened again with force.
Dante understood. The way his little body was beginning to tremble was the sign that the panic of being left adrift, at the mercy of strangers and inside a cell, was beginning to take hold of him. I had to get him out of there. He had endured going into that dungeon and healing his own, after all he had been through, and yet he hadn’t broken, until now.
-Dimitri, you take care of the rest, I have to get back,” he didn’t look at his brother, but he didn’t need any more words, so many years at his twin’s side was more than enough to read him beyond what was necessary.
Dante slipped a hand under his thighs and carried him, leaving the place as quickly as possible. The lighter air made its way into Lukyan’s lungs and he took a big breath.
-I’ll take you to your children,” the wolf walked towards the manor, pressing him to his chest and trying to diminish his scent, so as not to make him uncomfortable.
-You won’t do anything to them,” he specified when he received no answer from him, “to my pack?
Dante sighed.
-Can you worry about yourself a little more? They will be fine, my brother will know what to do with the males so that they integrate properly with the other members, but haven’t you seen yourself,” his tone was a little more brusque, “you have children and responsibilities, if you don’t take care of yourself, you will leave them without a mother,” he concluded.
-I know my limits,” his words trailed off into thin air, “I won’t leave them alone this time, I just can’t bear to stand idly by when there’s so much to do,” he spoke softly, keeping his words firm. Showing glimpses of the old leader still in him.
-I’m the alpha now and everyone is my responsibility, so you don’t have to carry all that burden,” he replied annoyed. He couldn’t understand such strength in a small being.
Lukyan was slow to respond and he thought he had fallen asleep.
-Still, even if I am no longer queen, I will tie my arms and legs; I will give up my life and everything I have for the sake of my family, only then will I be at peace…” giving a yawn, he finally fell asleep, without finishing his statement.
Dante looked at his pale and still thin face. That wolf put everything that was important to him first, even his health. He knew that if he continued like this he could lose him, he would have to take drastic measures if he used more force than necessary.
He walked through the door of the mansion and headed for the alcove designated for him. Sasha was waiting for him, spinning in circles. As he entered, the puppy ran in his direction, but when he realised who it was, he backed away. His face grimaced with concern as he saw his mother in the alpha’s arms.
-Don’t be alarmed, he fell asleep when he walked too far,” she would not worry the youngest with details beyond his comprehension.
She watched him nod and sit on the edge of the bed beside Lukyan. Once she had placed him on the mattress and covered his body with the blanket, she turned to the boy.
-Take care of him,” she shook out the tangle of tousled hair, an action that impressed Sasha, and left with her mind still analysing the new developments.
She had to keep that information as safe as possible, if someone with the wrong scruples found out about it, the lives of the few omegas that existed could be in danger or end up for other purposes. He was grateful that those who had witnessed this were trusted wolves of his brother.
He heard his beta walk over to where he was and turned, waiting for him leaning against the wall.
-What’s wrong?” he asked, ready for a new problem.
His beta’s posture seemed uncomfortable, like something didn’t feel right.
-Alpha,” he pursed his lips into a thin line, “The Council is aware of the situation, they’ll be here in about eight days,” he seemed disgruntled, with good reason.
Dante clicked his teeth. He had hoped to have more time to place all the members of the new pack in better conditions and finish getting certain matters on track, but there was no more he could do. Going against the flow would be worse.
-Prepare the conditions for their reception, nothing can go wrong,” he ordered.
By the time the day of the Council meeting arrived, Lukyan had gained back some of the lost pounds and his senses had mostly recovered, except for his eyesight which refused to improve. No matter the doses of b***d that Dante offered him and the drugs from the doctor, nothing brought back the clarity and focus to do things for himself, there was a constant haze present. He had had to learn to be guided by his hearing and his sense of smell, which had helped him a lot for the moment.
-This Lucian, always such a stickler for etiquette,” Bastian protested, stepping through the door in a pair of black shoes that matched the trousers and shirt ensemble Lukyan was wearing. The high collar and long sleeves were perhaps a little overdone, but he didn’t want to show any skin in front of what was considered the law among wolves. Bastian had done his bit by choosing a thick fabric decorated with the same texture as the yarn. Simple, but elegant at the same time.
The wolf had pulled her hair into a low ponytail at the back of her head, leaving only her locks framing her face, because she wasn’t going to a party. On the contrary, his future and that of his pack would be defined that day.
-You must be calm and not get exasperated with any of them, no matter what they say,” Bastian kept telling him, “Some may be intransigent, but remember that Dante will be with you,” he said, convinced of the alpha’s protection.
Lukyan’s mind was blank. In her ten years as queen, she had never attended either of the two meetings the Council had forced her to attend. If he did, he was sure he would only be punished and they would not hear anything he had to say.
The reason: it was forbidden for an omega to lead the pack.
