Edgar opened the door and came out an hour later. His countenance wore a cold, pale expression while his brow was painfully furrowed. He was wiping his hands with a handkerchief, which, as much as he tried to hide it in the dressing gown he was wearing, a few drops of b***d were visible to those present.

Bastian, Falco, Dmitri and finally Lukyan approached him.

-How is he?” Bastian let go of his husband’s arm and Edgar looked at him.

-How are they?” Lukyan repeated the question.

He was serious and his voice came out so straight that the others thought he felt nothing, but inside he was just trying to hold himself together. If he crumbled, being the only one at the top of the pack, they would be very vulnerable.

-Edgar bowed formally, “I don’t have good news,” he closed his eyes, then opened them calmly, his hands beginning to ache from clenching them, “The alpha’s condition is very delicate. The poison in his body is extremely strong and is destroying his organs very fast. Not even his alpha genetics can restore his cells so quickly. We did everything we could to stabilise him, but all the drugs we gave him are being nullified so fast that there’s no time for them to take effect.

Dmitri scraped his teeth and hit the wall near him, chipping it.

-As for Matias,” he continued, “being so young it has also affected his body, but he has consumed a minimum of the poison so his condition, though in danger, is not as serious, still, we must not neglect him.

Lukyan trembled and lowered his head. He felt his heart pounding. The thought of losing both his son and his husband was beginning to torment him. Without realising it, his breathing began to become agitated.

-Falco spoke before everyone else.

-We are testing his b***d to see if we can replace an antidote, but we don’t have as much time as we wanted. What can be done for now is – he looked at Lukyan and bowed – excuse me for saying this, but if you give the alpha some of your b***d we’ll have at least a few more hours. He has only recently marked him and as a mate his essence is stronger than any transfusion you can give him,” the doctor then turned his head, “Queen, queen, what is it?

Lukyan had heard him, he understood what he had to do but the word death throbbed only in his head leaving him in mild shock. The hurried footsteps of one of the soldiers guarding Laira’s room could be heard down the corridor and he knelt down beside the omega.

-Queen, bad news, your daughter, your daughter,” he began hesitantly, “Your daughter is missing.

Everyone but him looked at him.

-It was her,” Bastian sobbed, and Falco covered his mouth against his chest.

The news hit Lukyan so hard that he staggered slightly. Had it been Laira? He couldn’t believe it. Another footstep sounded from the other side and this time it was one of the dungeon guards.

-Commander, Commander,” the wolf almost fell to the ground as he stopped abruptly, “Please come back,” he implored, “We don’t know how, but Sylas, Sylas has escaped,” he said.

-What did you say?” Mitya growled so loudly that the window panes shook and then looked at Lukyan who still had his head down. His eyes were angry and he blamed him.

-Queen, what are you going to do? Edgar asked.

-Give the orders, you are the queen,” Mitya pressed.

-Lukyan.” Bastian called out to her.

The omega was breathing heavily. Her husband and son, poisoned, the rejection of her other three children, Catherine had disappeared and was not free of guilt, Sylas had escaped…

-Lukyan-

-Queen

-Queen-

-AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!! -a scream of frustration made the walls shudder.

Lukyan turned to the window and dropped forward, clutching the frame as his hair fell forward, covering his sweat soaked face. His breathing was visibly shaky and his fingernails almost splintered the wood.

All around him, all voices ceased. Those present stared at him, stunned to see him lose control like that.

-Queen.” Edgar slowly approached and touched her shoulder, looking through her hair at her wide, wide-open eyes.

-Lukyan,” Bastian called timidly from behind him.

Mitya turned his head to the side, clicking his tongue guiltily. He was young, with a great responsibility, with several unfavourable events around him and they were putting a lot more pressure on him. It was a miracle he hadn’t exploded earlier.

-Mitya,” he heard him call faintly, “Go replace out what happened and take the strongest soldiers you have and hunt Sylas down, wherever he is,” he took a breath as if he needed it, “He must not leave the pack boundaries, if he does go in Lucian’s direction send someone to report that I need his help, he owes me too much to refuse. Catch him dead or alive.

Even Dmitri was surprised by his words and the accusing look faded slightly. He didn’t know what a great alpha like Lucian could owe him but this was no time to ask for explanations.

-Yes Queen,” and without another word he ran off with the soldier.

-Falco, take care of replaceing out where Laira is and I give you permission to bring her back by any method necessary if she puts up resistance,” he sounded incredibly weak, “Bastian I need you to keep an eye on my children, they don’t want to be near me now, and I’m afraid Sylas will come after them.

-Bastian was about to speak, but Lukyan’s voice interrupted him.

-Edgar, how much b***d do you need,” the omega looked at the doctor, pushing his damp hair away from his face.

-Not enough,” he said with concern, not knowing how much he would need to stabilise at least one of them.

-Take as much as you need.

-Falco took a step towards him and said seriously, “Queen, you must not be rash.

-After all, it would be more convenient if I were in that bed and not Dante,” Falco said, not giving them time to reply, “I didn’t want to answer that way, but now he wasn’t exactly emotionally stable enough to be tactful with his words.

She didn’t give them time to reply, she turned around and crept into the room where she was awaited by two young wolves.

-Falco,” Bastian touched her arm, “I think we were too rude.

The wolf didn’t respond, but he had to admit that the way they had all behaved, directly or indirectly accusing him of poisoning the alpha, hadn’t been very correct. They would have to apologise later. Lukyan hadn’t been bad so far. Maybe they had misjudged him. He was the beta of the pack and at the moment he didn’t know what to think.

Lukyan walked over to his son’s bed and stroked his forehead. A silent tear ran down his expressionless face and he leaned in for a k**s. The blue lips contrasted visibly with the other white skin.

-Don’t worry son, I’ll do everything I can to make you well,” she grabbed his hand and squeezed his fingers. He wouldn’t cry, not now.

Then she turned to Dante who was lying on a bed on the other side. His forehead was soaked with beads of sweat and he wiped it with a clean cloth on the table. He looked just like his son although his condition was far more dangerous. Lukyan ran his fingers down his cheek. Another tear rolled down his cheek.

-I’m sorry Dante, I’ve only brought you trouble since you found me,” she sobbed lightly, trying to regain control of her emotions, but it was difficult for her to always be neutral about everything. He was not made of iron, “I’m sorry,” she leaned down and left a k**s on the corner of her cold lips.

She heard Edgar enter.

-Queen,” he called calmly.

Lukyan arranged the sheets on both of them and approached the wolf who directed him to a table where a glass bowl and a razor awaited him. He sat down and took the knife and with the blade made three very deep wounds in his arm without showing the pain it caused him. The b***d began to gush out and he only left his hopes in every drop of the crimson liquid.
