Lukyan had decided many things in the moments he was able to take to himself to think. First, he could not yet tell his husband about the child in her womb. She knew he would be overjoyed, but that would only make her worries more. As queen and her half, her job was to take the weight off his shoulders, not put more on them.

Dante had suffered the loss of several puppy attempts, if she told him, firstly she would not let him participate in the coming war and that was a luxury they could not afford, or else they would not have given him the trust of their bloods. Secondly, he would be thinking all the time that his cub might die and he didn’t want to see him distressed. Now was a decisive moment. All energies and minds needed to be focused. The alpha had many wolves to lead and he couldn’t be a burden.

He rubbed his stomach fondly and smiled. At least he was glad that he would be the one who could give him what the alpha craved most. Even though he had adopted his pups and cared for them and loved them, he couldn’t complain about that. Nothing compared to his own offspring. Besides, he was aware that with the b***d inside him he would be able to give birth to her without any problems and would be able to survive more effectively.

The other thing he had decided was that he would end it all that night. The moon would soon be high and full in the black sky. The wolves were stronger with it and it would witness, perhaps, the greatest massacre after the Great War where the packs were finally created. Ryan had been a part of her life since she was a mere pup. She never imagined that he would be the one to stab her in the back and destroy the most important people in her life like her family. That night he had sworn to himself that he would put an end to his past and start over from scratch, with his new pack, his new life, his new family.

He walked around looking for Dante. He heard that he was outside and all around him there were various murmurs. As he left the mansion, he noticed that he was in front of the other male wolves of the pack. There were all those who were going to fight that night. Behind them were others he had not seen. They must have been part of the army of Lucian, Asule and the twin alphas. He understood that even though they were there they had not left the herd alone, but the number they had brought was considerable and necessary.

With that number Lukyan knew the situation would be extremely dangerous. Dante spoke, giving indications of how the organisation would be organised, and everyone listened attentively.

-We are not aware of how many wolves will attack our lands,” he heard him say.

He approached and when Dante stopped for a moment to watch him approach, Lukyan replied.

-That is the number that will attack, they will be here in just under an hour. They are moving fast even though the condition of many is not the best.

She heard him growl. Dante’s pack was one of the largest and had grown after the merger, but that didn’t mean the defence force was immense. There were many pups and wolves and they wouldn’t be in the battle so he could only count on a fraction of them, though they were strong.

With all the wolves they had gathered they were almost evenly matched. So victory would go to whoever killed the fastest.

Lukyan felt several eyes on him and he knew it was because of the change in his appearance. He had slicked back his hair but to have it grow overnight was not normal, plus he knew his presence was more imposing than before.

A howl was heard from far away. They were getting closer and the alphas began to move the wolves strategically towards the clearing in the forest in front of the pack entrances. It was a flat area where you could only attack head on. It was the best terrain to fight an enemy as treacherous as Ryan.

Lucian approached Lukyan and smelled Dante’s strong scent coming from him and knew he had reaffirmed his hold on the omega, as well as the faint scent of his past rut. He said nothing, it must be part of his whole process. But there was also a small, very faint essence that he couldn’t define but that made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end and stare at him.

Lukyan took his hand.

-Take care of yourself.

He replied with a smile.

-Don’t worry, someone like him is no match for me or Dante.

That was something that needed to be checked. The wolf cracked his knuckles with his old friend Kaiser and walked behind Aralia towards the first line of defence.

Dante made sure his mate was in a suitable position for him to escape, in any case. His father would guard him along with Dmitri, Lucian’s recently arrived beta, and at least twenty other wolves from all the packs. She walked over to her husband and hugged him.

-Don’t do anything crazy,” she said against his ear, “If things get tense, my father will get you out of here. Don’t resist, that’s all I ask. If anything happens to me, you have to look after the herd.

-Nothing will happen to you,” he hugged him back.

When he let go, Lukyan put a hand on his chest and closed his eyes.

-This is the only thing I can give you before you go,” he said.

Dante felt a hugging warmth in his chest that went into his mind and it was as if everything around him expanded.

-Can you hear it?” Lukyan’s voice echoed in his head, as he lowered his face he realized that he was looking at him with his golden eyes.

-This is…” he replied in kind.

-A way for you to communicate with everyone through me. I will be the bridge. You can control everyone easier.

Dante’s eyes widened in surprise at how far his wolf’s power had extended. He looked at his father.

-Pa?

-That sounds strange,” Kaiser tapped his temple not being used to the voices in his mind in the current guise, “Don’t talk to your mother like that too much, you know she doesn’t like it when they’re walking around in her mind.

The alpha turned his attention back to his husband and kissed his forehead.

-Thank you, this will help me a lot.

-Be careful, don’t let Ryan bite you,” he said but in his gut he knew he would be the one burying his fangs in her neck.

Dante left her side and anguish consumed her, but she tried to stay calm. She steeled herself and closed her eyes.

-What are you doing?” Kaiser stood alert at her side as the scent of enemies grew more potent.

-Dispelling my mind throughout the pack and setting up a control barrier. It’s the reverse effect of mind dominance. I could do it with just one wolf, but now my ability has increased considerably,” he took a deep breath, “This way, Ryan won’t be able to bring any wolves on our side under his control.

Kaiser nodded his head.

-What if something were to happen to you and that barrier were to be broken?

He took a few seconds to respond, concentrating and beginning to weave the threads between each of the individuals.

-With Ryan’s power he could destroy anyone’s consciousness quickly. Even Lucian and Dante are no strangers to that. Nothing can happen to me, otherwise we’d be losing without him struggling.

-Lucian, you truly are a wolf to be feared.

He smiled at her.

-I’m just a wolf protecting my own.
