Dante was not an alpha for the sake of it. His instincts were refined, and now that his husband was bonded to him, he’d already realised something was wrong. Very wrong. So when his queen opened the bathroom door, he was waiting for him sitting on the edge of the bed, his face serious and his arms crossed.

He wanted to know what it was that was bothering Lukyan and it would be that night.

-I don’t like the way you look at me,” Lukyan closed the door behind his back.

He had hidden that outfit in a safe place because he knew the scene in front of him would come. Dante could be very stubborn and insistent when he wanted to be.

-I can’t look at you,” the alpha bowed his head and his features relaxed, “Come,” he held out his hand.

Lukyan walked over to him and grabbed his hand. Her husband pulled him down and sat him on his lap, hugging his narrow waist. He left a soft k**s on her collarbone, which was visible through the neckline of her thin sleeping ensemble.

-You smell good,” she sniffed his neck and pulled him closer.

Lukyan returned her embrace and let himself melt into her warmth. For a moment his worries melted away until….

-What’s wrong with you? -The alpha’s voice against his ear made him tense again.

-Nothing,” he looked away. He could be married to Dante and sleeping together and all, but he was still self-conscious about s*x. Besides, he liked the way their relationship was now, stable and harmonious. If only they hadn’t told him about the part about him being unhappy….

Dante pulled away without letting go of her waist, he was small compared to him so it wasn’t much work.

-You’re lying to me Lukyan. I can sense something is haunting you and I want to know what it is. I smell it’s related to me,” his voice had become low. Lukyan had never hidden anything from him before.

Well… if she could remember, she had hidden the issue of him being pregnant and attending the war. She knew his reasons, if she had told him of course she wouldn’t have let him go, even though Lukyan had been an essential and vital point in that battle.

Nor was it possible for him to be in a state again. He might be an omega, but neither of them had fallen back into heat, and besides, his body needed a few years to fully recover.

So what was it…

-I’m not hiding anything from you Dante. I have things to think about too,” he squeezed his shoulders, “So please don’t ask any more questions,” he slurred without noticing. He was exhausted and his head hurt.

But Dante wasn’t going to give in so easily. He wouldn’t let him move from his lap.

-I’m not letting go until you tell me,” his voice wasn’t stern, but his silver eyes were. His instinct told him that this was an important and delicate matter that he could not overlook.

This was a difficult situation for Lukyan. It wasn’t as if she could tell her husband right off the bat that she knew she wasn’t satisfying him. He was aware that he had to be honest and matters like that had to be spoken about without embarrassment, but he was still young and had become accustomed to keeping a lot of things to himself. To see himself vulnerable as he was now was simply unheard of.

-All right,” Dante suddenly stood up and set him down on the bed. His face was serious, “So that’s the way it is,” she looked at him sternly as he straightened up, “Well, until you tell me what’s wrong with you, don’t come to me.

And he turned back towards the door.

-Dante? -Lukyan was shocked.

-I’ll sleep somewhere else,” and he slammed the door shut, signalling his annoyance.

Lukyan, still on the bed gasped, but why was he reacting in such an uncompromising manner? He was not like that. He was acting like a wayward puppy. Knowing what he was like, she shouldn’t force him like that.

She put her hand to her face. Now he had another problem. This was their first big argument after they had formally bonded. It exhausted him to death.

Siran looked at his alpha who had his face buried in his hands.

-I imagine he did something he’s regretting,” the beta put the papers down on the desk.

-Siran, I think I made a mistake,” Dante sounded hoarse and tired.

-You are an alpha, not a god, it is wise to make mistakes.

The superior wolf lifted his face, revealing silver eyes that looked more intense over dark circles under his eyes.

-I made a mistake with Lukyan.

Siran’s hand paused in midair and looked up at him with a raised eyebrow.

-Well alpha, I wish you luck.

-Siran,” Dante dropped back sighing, “I need advice now, not something like that from you.

The beta sat down in front of him.

-My alpha, only you would think to provoke the queen. You are known for your stern character despite being very calm. What did you do to upset him and end up in such a state?

Dante opened his eyes.

-Last night I saw him a bit stressed and anxious, and I wanted him to tell me the reason, but apparently he was influenced by his anxiety and I pushed him. I pretended to be upset and told him not to talk to me until he told me the reason why he was like that. I left the room and waited in the hallway for him to come to me, but….

-He never did, did he? – Siran sighed knowing the obvious.

Dante put his hands to his head.

-The last thing I wanted to do was argue when my birthday is tomorrow. I wanted to spend the whole day with him and my pack.

-But he screwed up every last one of them,” the other wolf stressed.

-Siraaaaan, don’t fan the flames any more, and don’t rub my nose in what I did wrong,” Dante protested.

-What if you apologise to him? The queen will understand. She’ll tell him in time what’s got him so nervous. I’m sure it has something to do with his birthday,” of course the beta knew what it was. Sara had given him extra details, but he was no one to meddle in the relationship.

Dante thought for a moment. He, better than anyone, knew that pressure methods didn’t work with Lukyan, and he had to admit that he had acted childish. Even he, at times, had things he didn’t want to share. So why had he forced himself on him like that.

He sighed and ran his hand through his hair, slicking it back.

-Always so wise. Besides, I’m putting the noose around my own neck,” he smiled sideways. He loved sleeping with the wolf beside him, touching him, kissing him, not limiting himself to him. That he had told him not to talk to him was like condemning himself – I’ll go talk to him.

But he only had to get up for the door to be opened by two agitated wolves. Dante was alarmed.

-What’s wrong?

-Alpha, we need your help on the edge of the pack. There are hyenas nearby and they’re prowling around. They look like they’re just passing through, but you can tell they’re hungry.

-How many are there? -Siran also stood up. Every year, hyenas used to move from one enclosure to another in search of better conditions. But that they were passing so close to the boundaries of the wolf packs was not a good thing. Their territories had nothing to do with each other, nor were they passing through- Alpha,” he turned to Dante.

-Siran, it looks like the conversation with my husband and my birthday celebration is going to be delayed. I can’t put my pack at risk. Send a message to Layan to keep an eye on the situation. I will personally take care of this.

If there was an attack on the road he would intercept it in the front line. No one could dare cross his lands as they pleased, and certainly not without asking permission.

-So ma… you and the alpha fought,” Fallen clutched the very small Aidan as Lukyan spooned him a spoonful of ground beef mush.

He was still a puppy, but his fangs were so large and developed that Lukyan had had to wean him early because his nipples were destroyed. Luckily the little one had quickly become accustomed to solid food.

-We didn’t argue. We just…

-You and Pa argued,” Axel sat down next to Lukyan and hugged him around the waist, “The alpha was in a bad mood at breakfast and you barely looked at each other, when normally he’s kissing or touching you every chance he gets. Doesn’t he realise there are minors here?

Lukyan stood still with the spoon in front of Aidan’s mouth, where the boy, seeing that the food wasn’t reaching him, grabbed the spoon himself and brought it to his mouth.

-Oh, my brother is very clever,” Sacha knelt down next to Fallen and Aidan, and kissed his tender little foot. Then she looked at her mother.

Lukyan lowered his arms and the plate was picked up by Fallen to finish feeding his brother.

-Ma, are you okay? -Fallen stroked his hand.

Lukyan sighed and leaned against Axel.

-Well, I’ve got a lot on my mind right now, and it all happened so fast. Dante wants to know, but I can’t tell him yet.

His sons looked at each other.

-And that’s why Pa was so upset? -Axel protested.

-He wasn’t upset,” Sacha interrupted him, “More like depressed. That I caught him looking at ma.

-He was the one who told me not to go near him if I didn’t tell him what I was hiding,” Lukyan squeezed his septum. His head was threatening to ache after not having slept all night.

-Ma, why don’t you come clean with him? -Faillen smiled at him, “Tell him to give you time. You two understand each other very well and I’m sure you’ll make up. Besides, knowing Pa, we know he won’t last long before he’s after you, looking to touch or k**s you.

A group guffaw rang out from the three brothers, and they were joined later by little Aidan, though he didn’t understand what they were talking about. Lukyan closed his eyes and sighed.

-I think they’re right. I’ll go talk to him. Maybe I can’t tell him what’s wrong with me, but he’s the only one who can help me right now,” he smiled at them and left a k**s for each of them.

Just then one of the pack guards came running in. Lukyan’s countenance became deadly serious.

-What is it?

-Queen…
