Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 103
Chapter 103:
Along the way, Shane grabbed my hand. “Eveline, thank you for giving me this opportunity. I promise to be good to you. Believe in me.”
I remembered that, during the day of our divorce, I once told Shane, “If you ever feel like the rest of the world doesn’t love you anymore, please think of me. Know that I don’t love you either.”
He had probably forgotten that. Only someone as shameless as him could be so confident after hearing something like that. He must be thinking that as long as he wants to start over with me after hopelessly destroying me, all the pain I’ve suffered will be erased.
Even though I detested this man to the bone, I had to keep up the pretense to make him look convincing. I let him hold my hand and said, “Sure.”
Then, I pointed to the supermarket in front of
“Let me over there. I’m going to buy something.” Shane stopped in front of the supermarket and said, “I’ll wait for you.”
However, I said, “No, thank you. You can leave now. I’ll call a cab later.”
With that, he nodded and replied, “Okay. But be careful.”
So, off I went to the supermarket. Once I was sure Shane had left, I immediately caught a cab back to Wonder Hospital.
As soon as I got out of the cab, I ran to the garbage can without hesitation. As dirty and filthy as it was, I rummaged through the trash can.
When the sanitation worker in charge of the area knew I had lost something, he helped me by emptying the trash can. Somehow, it made me look like a beggar, rummaging through the trash on the floor.
Soon it was time to leave work. More and more people were watching and making fun of me. I had no time or energy to worry about the comments, because I couldn’t replace the pearl necklace anywhere.
That necklace was not small. I would have been able to see it at a glance. But after a long time of searching, I couldn’t replace it in the trash.
With my own eyes, I watched as Derek threw it in the trash can. I wondered if someone else had taken it.
If I couldn’t retrieve that pearl necklace, it only meant that Derek and I would never get back together.
As I had been squatting on the floor for what seemed like hours, I lost the strength to get up.
Soon, a pair of clean black shoes appeared beside me. Someone held out a hand to help me up.
When I noticed the person’s dark gray suit, I instantly knew it was Aaron.
He didn’t care how dirty my hands were or how many people were watching us. He just took me by the hand and led me to the hospital sink. There, he turned on the faucet and helped me clean my hands.
“What were you looking for?” he asked me as he washed my hands. I shook my head in response.
“Once you lose something, you can’t replace it again.” When my hands were nice and clean, Aaron drove me home.
Aaron was a much wiser driver than Derek. His style was very gentle, like his temperament. On the way, he said to me, “Eveline, if you can’t let something go, then don’t let it go like that. Follow your heart.”
Although she had no idea what I was looking for, she probably knew why I was acting so strangely. I leaned out the window and replied, “Now that I’ve made a mistake, I shouldn’t make any more.”
Aaron tapped his fingers rhythmically on the steering wheel with a bitter smile on his lips.
“In love, there is no right or wrong. Sometimes, people know that what they want is impossible, but they can’t control their heart.”
At first glance, he seemed a simple and pure character. But, at times, I had the impression that he had been through a lot. However, the vicissitudes of his life were deeply overshadowed by his cheerful demeanor.
Once he took me home, he pulled out a cigarette.
“You can go inside your house. I’ll leave when I’m done with this cigarette,” he said.
As I walked into the depths of the alley, I looked back, only to see that his car was still there.
The next morning, I came out of the alley and saw Shane’s car waiting outside.
He looked at me through the half-open window and said, “I’ve come to pick you up for work.”
I was surprised at how considerate he was being to me.
I decided not to think too much about it and sat in the passenger seat.
Since I was being offered free transportation, I had no reason to refuse.
A lot of people had witnessed what Aaron did yesterday at the hospital gate. Therefore, as soon as I arrived at the hospital, I heard all kinds of judgments. To suffer less, I had to use Shane as a shield for now.
At noon, he came up to me and said he wanted to have lunch with me, but I refused.
I was just acting, but I could tell he was pretty serious about getting back together with me. Of course, I still had no idea what was going on in his head.
As I was about to leave work, Aaron called me and invited me to dinner. I thought about all the rumors about me and wanted to say no, but it wouldn’t be appropriate to turn him down outright. He had become someone I couldn’t turn down.
“Sorry, Aaron, I have a date later,” I replied. This was the only excuse I could think of to avoid him for the moment.
In a disappointed, but strangely cheerful voice, he said, “I see. I guess I’ll have to invite you over sooner next time.”
After hanging up, I dialed Shane’s number. “Didn’t you want to buy me lunch?”
After work, Shane was waiting for me downstairs. He soon took me to a moderate restaurant.
Judging by how poor his financial situation was at present, he seemed to be sincere enough to take me to a restaurant like this.
If I hadn’t divorced him, I would have taken him home and cooked dinner myself just to save money. But now things were different. Not only did I accept his invitation, but I ordered several expensive dishes when he handed me the menu. I didn’t order any drinks other than a glass of water.
Once all the dishes were served, I picked up my fork. But soon, someone picked up the glass of water on the table and spilled it all over my face.
