Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 102
Chapter 102:.
When I left work that day, I saw Shane leaning against the wall downstairs.
He seemed to have been waiting for me.
As soon as he saw me, he came over and said, “I’ll take you home.”
As we were leaving the hospital, I said, “Why did you leave work early today – aren’t you supposed to be a workaholic?”
Shane shook his head, smiling helplessly. “I’ve come to my senses. I won’t neglect my family for work again. Because of you, I can get there even sooner,” he said.
For me?” I scoffed inwardly.
I wanted to stop him from walking beside me, but as I left the hospital, I saw Derek smoking as he leaned against his car. One of his hands was wrapped in gauze and hung at his side as smoke enveloped him. His whole appearance gave him a scary look.
Suddenly, I felt nervous. When he looked at me, I averted my gaze and turned my attention to Shane. “Where’s your car?” I asked him.
He looked like he hadn’t noticed Derek. When he heard my question, his eyes lit up and he immediately grabbed my hand.
“I’ll take you there.”
I just followed Shane stiffly to his car, resisting the urge to give Derek a glance. All I wanted was to leave and get away from this place as soon as possible.
I felt like I was by the sea, and if I acted. even a little slower, the rising tide would devour me.
Fortunately, Shane’s car was parked nearby. As soon as I opened the door, a hand wrapped in gauze slammed it shut.
My heart sank at the sight of it. Shane was already sitting in the driver’s seat, and he didn’t get out despite the situation.
Meanwhile, Derek was leaning against the car with one hand in his pocket. I didn’t dare look him in the eye. I could only direct my attention to his injured hand.
“Eveline, I’m not undecided. Are you going to get in his car or mine? Choose. Whatever you choose, I will respect your decision.”
The way she spoke made it seem like the matter was insignificant. But to me it was so serious that I could hardly breathe.

I was about to betray my will and walk over to Derek.
But when I remembered the reason he married me, how he was still in love with Sybil, and how his father looked down on me, I lost the courage to take another step toward him.
And since being with him was impossible, I had to be decisive. I had to give up before I sank too deep into the mire. I reached out to open Shane’s car door again, but I couldn’t, because Derek was still leaning against it.
He didn’t move, even though he saw me trying to open it. He seemed unresponsive, but I noticed his gauze-wrapped hand clench into a fist. Soon, blood seeped through the gauze.
“Have you made up your mind?” his voice became so cold that he lost his cool.
I took a deep breath and steeled myself to look him in the eye.
“Yes.”
I thought he would lose his temper, but to my surprise, he didn’t. “It’s okay,” he said.
I nearly lost my composure, but I did my best to calm down and make sure I didn’t show any emotional fluctuations.
Derek slowly pulled a cigarette out of his pocket and lit it. “Anyway, pick a time when we’ll go through the divorce proceedings.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat and said, “Okay.”
His hand holding the cigarette froze for a moment. After a while, he used his injured hand to hold the cigarette. He reached into his other hand into his pocket and pulled out a pearl necklace.
I recognized that necklace. It was the same one he had sent to the jewelry store for repair after Shane and Vivien’s wedding.
“This doesn’t seem to be good for anything anymore.”
The next second, the pearl necklace flew out of her hand and fell into the nearby trash can.
When I saw it, my heart ached.
In fact, the very moment she pulled it out and raised her hand, I already knew what she was going to do. I felt the desire to take it from him, but I didn’t do it.
After throwing the necklace away, Derek turned and walked away without hesitation, leaving me with the image of his cold exterior walking away from me.
But all I could focus on was the gauze wrapped around his hand, and I could see the blood spreading. I wasn’t one to faint at the mere sight of blood, but the sight of it made me feel hurt and almost dizzy.
“Eveline, come on.”
The car window rolled down and Shane’s voice brought me back to reality.
I needed to stop this play, so I finally got into his car. In the rearview mirror, I saw Derek’s car quickly turn around and drive away.
