Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 14
Chapter 14:.
“He said on the phone that he had an urgent matter to deal with. I didn’t see him when I arrived, but they say he has already paid the fee before he left. By the way, who is that man? He has a great moral character and his voice is so pleasant to hear.” Louise winked at me, curious to know what I was thinking.
Even though I was a mere stranger to Derek, he had done so much for me. It was only natural for him to mind his own business.
“I ask you.” Louise nudged me.
When I came to my senses, I told her about Derek taking me home.
She didn’t ask me any more questions about him.
The moment I reached out to take Louise’s apple, I saw that my hand was wrapped in layers of gauze.
Curving her lips, Louise continued to cut the apple into small pieces and handed them to me one by one. “Do you remember? When you dated Shane, I had him investigated for your sake. There were a lot of negative rumors about him during your time in medical school. Once, a girl jumped off a cliff because of him and died. Later, the girl’s real boyfriend beat him badly and he was bedridden for more than two weeks. To get a recommendation for admission, he pulled all kinds of tricks! Didn’t I tell you he’s nothing but a weasel? But you were too stubborn to listen to me!” said Louise angrily.
Indeed, at the time she feared I was marrying the wrong person, so she did her best to investigate Shane’s background. But at the time, her tenderness blinded me to the truth.
I kept my head down, silently listening to Louise’s rebuke.
“Why didn’t you tell me about this, it’s barbaric to keep this from me! Why didn’t you even consider staying at my house for the time being?”.
It was true that her house was quite large. Her father had a successful business. Not once in his life had he ever been short of money. The only thing he lacked was friendship and love.
When she was in high school, her father divorced her mother and married a woman who was only a few years older than her. Since then, she became a rebellious daughter and her grades in school dropped drastically.
“I’m worried that it will only bring you misfortune,” I replied.
Louise shot me a look. “Say more things like that and I’ll get mad at you!

Misfortune, you say? You’re my friend, Eve. You could never bring me bad luck.
Remember how you talked me into coming to your house back then?”
One cold winter day, in our third year of school, Louise argued with her father and ran away from home in a fit of anger. When I saw her, she was sitting on the side of the road, shivering with cold.
Although we were classmates, we weren’t that close. After all, she was rich and I was just a poor student. Louise usually acted arrogant and was easy to anger. That’s why I didn’t have many real friends. But that day, I felt sorry for her when I saw her alone on the road. I couldn’t bear to stay away from her, so I finally convinced her to come home with me. At first, I was afraid that a rich girl like her wouldn’t get used to my house. But it was fortunate that she didn’t mind anything about my house.
Since then, Louise and I had become best friends; maybe even closer.
I told her I wanted to get out of the hospital, so Louise asked the doctor to confirm if there was nothing serious about my condition. The doctor told her that I just needed to recover because I had lost too much blood. So Louise helped me make the discharge arrangements.
She drove a new car, and it was quite luxurious Hoan.
When I got into the car, she said, “This was a gift from my father. He gave it to me and I took it. Anyway, he owes me.”
I had always thought that there would never be true hatred between a father and daughter, but the hatred between Louise and her father still existed after so many years.
The truth was that he wanted to convince her to make peace with her father. After all, she still had a chance to continue arguing with her father, but I was not that lucky, as I had lost mine.
I didn’t know much about cars, so when Louise saw that I was looking at the car, completely clueless, she gave me to understand that it was a Lamborghini. “A Lamborghini?” I repeated under my breath. “All I saw was a bikini.” Louise burst out laughing and gave me a nod of approval.
That’s when I thought of Derek’s car. “There’s an M superimposed on another M. Inside a triangle.
inside a triangle. What make of car is that?”. Louise looked at me with disdain. “Wait a minute. I think you’re talking about a Maybach.”
“Is a Maybach expensive?” I asked.
“A Maybach is much better than my car, of course. The worst of that make costs at least a million dollars.”
“What, how much?” I was surprised to hear.
Louise poked my forehead with her finger. “A million dollars, Eve! Look at your prissy face. It almost makes me loathe you. It’s a good thing you’ve seen the true colors of that bastard Shane so soon. You’re sexy and you have a beautiful face. You can replace a good man; a better one. Let Shane wallow in regret.” As she spoke, I was thinking about something else.
I remembered Derek mentioning that he was a businessman. A businessman who drives a luxury car worth at least a million dollars must be doing great business.
Louise took me to my old house and told me not to leave until I was fully recovered. She had also asked a maid who worked for her family to take care of me for two weeks, until the wounds on my hands had healed.
During those days, Derek never contacted me again.
Every time I saw his number in my contact list, I had the urge to dial him and thank him. In the end, I decided not to.
Perhaps at the time he helped me because of his sense of fairness. He was a man who ran a big business. Perhaps he had already forgotten this trivial episode in his busy life.
I imagined that I would never interact with him again, but I was wrong.
It was all meant to be.
