Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 216
Chapter 216:.
“No, Derek, listen to me. I met Alvaro yesterday.”
As soon as those words crossed my lips, the smile on Derek’s face froze. His gaze suddenly turned ice cold and his hand around my waist tightened.
“Did he hurt you?” asked Derek in a voice that barely hid his anger.
I decided not to beat around the bush and told him everything.
I told him about my recent discovery that Alvaro was actually Denzel’s student. I also told him how Alvaro destroyed my stalker’s camera. However, I didn’t mention what Alvaro had said at the lookout.
As I spoke, Derek relaxed a bit. He sat down next to me at the conference table and crossed his legs. Then he pulled a cigarette out of his breast pocket and lit it without saying anything.
His face was expressionless and he just listened to me. I had no idea what was going through his mind right now.
Swallowing hard, I continued, “You know, when you picked me up yesterday, I had just escaped from my stalker. I didn’t tell you yesterday because I didn’t want you to worry about me.”
Derek took a puff on his cigarette before turning his face to look at me. I could see extreme tenderness in his eyes.
“Why are you telling me now?” he asked.
At that moment, the image of the black car in the parking lot from earlier flashed through my mind. I got so scared that I grabbed Derek’s arm in a hurry.
“A few minutes ago, I saw the car that was following me yesterday. It was in the subway parking lot of Dere International. I’m afraid that person isn’t just after me. I’m afraid he wants to hurt you and the company.”
Derek frowned and took my hand gently.
“Don’t you trust your husband anymore? Do you really think I’m that easy to track down?”
I was surprised at his calmness after what I had just told him. However, I did not share her serenity or her optimism.
Why was that person chasing me? Why was that car at Dere International? Also, who was Alvaro’s source in the company? Was he infiltrating the people around Derek? Several questions popped into my mind the more I thought about this whole thing.

Derek must have noticed that I was quite pensive, because I felt a light pinch on my hand, which snapped me out of my thoughts.
“Don’t think too much,” he told me gently.
He then led me out of the meeting room and into his office.
I was about to enter the office, when I had a start.
My eyes widened as I stared at the person sitting at the desk and reading some documents. It was Derek’s father, Gifford.
The man must have heard our footsteps, because he suddenly looked up. When his eyes landed on me, I could read the surprise in them. He definitely didn’t expect to see me and Derek at the same time. Of course, I didn’t expect to see him there either.
Derek probably sensed my uneasiness, as he gripped my hand tighter and calmly walked in. “Why are you here?” asked Derek coldly to Gifford.
From his tone and attitude, you wouldn’t think the man he was talking to was his father.
Gifford was probably used to it because he didn’t seem surprised or upset at all. He merely replied nonchalantly, “What’s wrong with you coming to visit my son’s business?” Derek said nothing.
Gifford leaned quietly against the back of the chair. The man acted as if only he and Derek were in the room. He completely ignored my presence.
“I need to talk to you alone,” Gifford finally said.
Hearing that, I immediately said, “I’ll leave you alone.”
Derek, however, did not loosen his grip. Rather, he held my hand tighter. He looked at me gently and said, “You don’t have to leave.” Then he glanced at his father again. “If you have something to say, go ahead. Eveline is my wife. I don’t need to keep anything from her.”
When he said the word ‘wife,’ I felt my heart leap in my chest. For the first time, I had the impression that the word came from the bottom of his heart. I didn’t protest and sat down on a nearby sofa.
When I raised my head again, I met Gifford’s sharp eyes. I quickly averted my gaze. However, as I saw Derek’s imposing figure, I felt my fear diminish dramatically.
Gifford leaned back on the couch with a smile on his face. Of course, Gifford being Gifford, there was nothing friendly about his smile. He looked a little haughty, as usual, and seemed a little angry at his son’s stubbornness.
Gifford stared at me. His gaze was ice cold and sent chills all over my body. After a while, he finally made up his mind to speak.
“I won’t beat around the bush. You, Derek, have always protected her, but do you know her well? I always thought she just wanted your money. But now it seems her intentions are even more complex.”
I was confused. What did she mean? Judging by her smugness and solemn tone, you’d think she had a scoop that she would soon expose to me. Right now I was furious. However, I did my best to keep my composure and looked Gifford straight in the eye.
“What do you mean?” I asked dryly.
Gifford scoffed. “What do I mean? You tell me.”
And with that, he slowly stood up and held up a picture in his hand.
