Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 217
Chapter 217:.
I was in complete shock. I never would have thought it was Gifford who was stalking me yesterday.
I finally understood why I felt like I knew this car. In fact, I had been to Gifford’s house several times and this black car was parked in the yard.
Although there was nothing striking about this car for me to particularly remember it, its image was still etched in my subconscious. That’s why I seemed to know this car so well, even if I couldn’t tell where I had seen it before.
Holding up the photo as if it were a trophy, Gifford continued gravely, “Did you really think that by destroying my camera I would have no more proof of what you did? You may have destroyed most of the photos, but I don’t need all of them. Just one is enough.
In the photo, you could see me and Alvaro walking side by side down the alley. It was just after getting out of the car at the abandoned airport. Judging by the blurriness of the photo, Gifford must have taken it in a hurry.
If I hadn’t been able to meet Derek a few minutes earlier and explain the situation, I would have panicked in the face of such overwhelming evidence.
I was very lucky in this case.
I didn’t say anything to defend myself. I merely gave Derek a silent glance. No doubt Gifford took my resigned attitude as if I were admitting my guilt, as his smile became more confident.
“Don’t you have anything to say? Derek, I’ve told you this woman is not what she seems. It’s clear now that she’s with Alvaro…”
“Enough!” Derek’s cold, firm voice suddenly interrupted Gifford’s jubilation.
The smile on the older man’s face froze instantly.
“Dad, Eveline is your daughter-in-law! How can you follow her around and take pictures of her without her knowing?” When he was serious, Derek was a man of few words. However, his words seemed to be carefully chosen, so that each one conveyed exactly what he meant.
Hearing what his son had just said, Gifford became so angry that his face turned red in an instant. He slammed the picture down on the table.
“Goddamn it! Derek, what the hell has this woman done to you to make you so blind? The evidence is right there in front of your eyes, but you’ve chosen not to see it! Why are you so insistent on defending her?”
“I know what this is about,” Derek said dryly. At all times, his face was completely expressionless.

His topic was about me, so he might as well say something. I stood up and glanced at Gifford. I asked in a neutral voice, “Why do you have to be so paranoid? It’s clear that, whatever I do, you’ll never accept me as your daughter-in-law! You’ve already made up your mind about me, haven’t you?”
Seeing our reactions, Gifford realized he was a little late. His centerpiece was no longer useful. He looked at me for a moment with a vicious grin. He looked like he was giving a glare to an opponent who had just won a battle. I knew from the look on his face that he wasn’t going to give up any time soon.
Gifford eventually admitted defeat and tore up the photo in a huff. Then, without a word, he turned and walked away,
When he left, I let out a breath of relief. I had won. However, this victory tasted bitter. It was not the result I wanted. I definitely didn’t want to cause any more problems between Derek and his father.
After Gifford left, Derek sat behind his desk and began to go about his business casually. He acted as if nothing had happened.
A few hours later, Derek was done for the day. We left together.
We drove to the parking lot holding hands. Once in the car, my phone vibrated. When I pulled it out to check, I saw that I had received a message from an unknown number.
The message read: [Don’t worry, you’ll be leaving soon].
I immediately knew who the message was from.
Who else but Gifford would send me such a warning?
At that moment I wondered what this man could have against me to hate me so much.
Why was he trying so hard to keep me from being with Derek?
At the time I didn’t know the reason. Someday in the future, when I knew the reason, I would finally realize that no matter how rich I was or even how hard I tried, I would never be good enough in his eyes.
I put the phone away as if nothing had happened. I decided not to attach any importance to this message. It wasn’t the first time Gifford had said those words to me, so I was no longer surprised.
I couldn’t understand why he was so desperate to get me to leave. He even went so far as to stalk me and sneak pictures of me. That was really inappropriate for a man his age. That’s when I started to think more seriously about this issue.
Earlier, in Derek’s office, I was so surprised to discover that it was Gifford who had followed me yesterday that I forgot important issues.
For example, Gifford knew Alvaro. Also, at the lookout, Alvaro had talked about being owed over a million dollars by the Sullivan Family. What kind of dispute did he have with the Sullivan Family?
Little did I know at the time that he had anything to do with any of this.
