Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 28
Chapter 28:
I had no idea what Derek was thinking about me at that moment. Since he had already said what he had said, even if there was something wrong with it, he could never take it back.
“I mean just take a look outside. It’s pouring with rain. Compared to letting a man spend the night, staying in a bachelor’s house is even more dangerous, isn’t it?”
My explanation was clumsy, to say the least. I was really just trying to express how much I trusted him. That day, when he drove me home, nothing happened between us, which made me believe that he was a man of good morals
He looked at me with a smile on his face, seemingly about to crack a joke.
But suddenly his phone rang.
When he saw the caller ID, he frowned,
He hesitated for a few moments. Finally, he decided to answer.
A woman’s voice came from the receiver. She called him “Derek. It was then that he turned his face to the side, lowering the volume on his phone. After that, he could no longer hear what the woman on the other end of the line was saying.
Obviously, she didn’t want me to hear the conversation.
So he lit a cigarette, listening quietly to the woman on the phone.
After a good while, he took a deep drag on his cigarette and said, “Okay, I’ll be right there.”
He hung up and turned his attention to me. I was standing by the door, stunned.
“Listen, I’ve got something.”
From the sound of his gentle voice and the look in his soft eyes, I could tell he wanted to comfort me and didn’t want me to overthink it.
As I thought about random things, my face turned red.
I wondered why he was making it seem like he didn’t want me to leave.
Feeling uncomfortable, I turned away, saying I was going to get an umbrella.

But then, he grabbed my wrist and looked down at his wet clothes.
“I’m already soaked. Getting even wetter won’t bother me.”
Having said that, he let go of my wrist, turned around and walked down the stairs.
I felt my wrist burn. As I stood in the doorway, I heard his footsteps slowly walking away down the stairs.
Moments later, I closed the door. I walked over to the window and saw him appear in the alley, walking with hurried steps. The ash from the cigarette between his fingers flickered along the path, until he was swallowed by the endless darkness of the night.
A song of poor sound quality was still blaring from the tape recorder. Right now,
“Hold on to My Dream” was playing.
“Today, I watched the snowfall under the cold night, with a frigid mind drifting, far away…”
Tonight there was no snow, but it was raining. The light from the desk lamp reflected off the window, revealing the steady downpour in the halo.
I hadn’t expected Shane to call me tonight. I already knew what his purpose in calling was, so I ignored the continuous ringing of the phone on the nightstand. I stood silently in front of the window, watching the rain and listening to the music.
After a while, Shane was still insisting on calling me. So, I grimaced and picked up the phone.
“Eveline,” he shouted hurriedly, apparently afraid I would hang up.
I held the phone and didn’t speak, waiting for him to say what he had to say.
“Eveline, we can’t delay the divorce. I…
“Well, if you want a divorce, let’s get a divorce.” I didn’t want him to keep stalling, so I interrupted him mid-sentence.
“Wait, really?” Shane sounded like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“What else do you want to talk about? Wait for me at 9 a.m., two days from now,” I said reluctantly
“Okay.” I could tell by the sound of his voice that he was relieved.
It was easy to tell that he had had a hard time with Vivien because he still couldn’t get a divorce.
Back then, I used to be very obedient to him, but Vivien was different. We had worked together for so long that I knew her well enough to know her personality. She had never been a good person.
Once I said what I had to say, I hung up, threw the phone on the bed and scoffed.
Since Shane wanted a divorce, I would grant his wish. But since he had cheated on me, I needed a way to vent my anger and let him suffer as I had suffered.
On the evening of the next day.
I put on especially the shortest dress I had, put on my makeup and went out with my purse. I went to a remote bar, which was relatively far from the center of town. I had planned to replace a man attractive enough, and have a one-night stand with him.
To be honest, I had never done anything so scandalous. It was quite exciting to think about.
If I were totally honest, Derek was a very attractive man. But I had to hide my feelings for him and bury that secret deep in my heart forever,
He had told me that I had to be responsible for him if I ever slept with him.
And I must admit that I couldn’t commit to something like that right now.
Besides, I still had no idea who the woman was who had called him last night. But since he left after receiving her call despite the heavy downpour, I deduced that she must be very important to him.
My own marriage was destroyed by another woman, so I should never allow myself to be the catalyst for the destruction of other people’s relationships. If I didn’t meet the right man at the right time, it just meant I hadn’t been very lucky.
I ordered a glass of liquor, watching the dancing figures and lusty souls in the neon light. Soon, I began to hit a target.
