Chapter 29:

As I twirled the glass in my hand, I directed a friendly smile at the bartender behind the counter. “Hey handsome, my phone’s out of battery, mind if I borrow yours?”

The people who worked in a place like this were very slick. They would never turn down a moderate request from a female customer. So, the waiter quickly unlocked his phone and handed it to me.

Afterwards, I used his phone to send a quick message, and then handed the phone back to him and thanked him for letting me use it.

Moments later, a man sat down next to me.

“Hi, Miss, are you alone?”

His initial comment didn’t interest me. Out of politeness, I turned my head and smiled.

He had colorful hair and wore a row of large earrings, making him look like a hooligan. It was obvious that this man was not a decent person.

He was not the ideal candidate for my one-night stand.

To tell the truth, I wasn’t expecting much. At the very least, the man should seem nice and decent.

Soon, my smile disappeared and I didn’t answer his question. I made it look like I didn’t want to talk to him.

But that man was quite insistent. He kept flirting with me, saying I was beautiful and had a good character. I took his words as a joke. From time to time, I took a sip of my liquor. Soon, the glass in my hand was almost empty, and he was moving closer and closer to me.

“Miss, I think an Angel’s Kiss suits you better.”

His poor accent almost made me want to vomit.

Seeing that I didn’t refuse his offer, he told the bartender to bring me a glass of said cocktail.

The cocktail was quite strong. Thanks to the lesson I had learned from getting drunk last time, I didn’t dare get drunk again. Although I was up for a one-night stand, I needed to stay sober. And this time, without Derek and Louise, I needed to take care of myself.

This scruffy looking man was not suitable. I swirled the glass in my hand again, scanning the crowd for a target.

At that moment, a man in a jacket approached and said something to the bartender.

He was visibly surprised when he saw me. I also seemed to recognize him somehow, but I couldn’t remember where I had seen him.

As soon as he left the bar counter, he picked up the phone and made a call. It was a bit far away, and the surroundings were noisy, so I couldn’t hear what he was saying on the phone at all.

But I did replace him staring at me as he spoke to the other person.

Naturally, I didn’t assume his call had anything to do with me.

After a few more drinks of alcohol, I felt tipsy, but I was still sober. This was the optimum level of intoxication I was looking for.

The man with the colorful hair soon grew restless. Slowly, he placed his hand on the back of mine. Just as I was about to shake it off, I noticed Shane coming through the door.

“Good. He came,” I commented inwardly.

I knew he would come after he got the message, because he cared about his dignity as a man.

So, I restrained the urge to slap the man with the colorful hair, and even smiled at him. It seemed that my smile motivated him to keep moving forward.

Once Shane approached, he seemed extremely sullen.

I pretended not to notice his presence. The man with the colorful hair had his back to the door, so he didn’t see someone approaching from behind with a devilish expression. He just concentrated on holding my hand.

That’s when Shane picked up the man with the colored hair and shoved him away.

Obviously, this punk was not someone easy to tangle with. He immediately spat on the ground, pointing at Shane’s nose. “Who the hell do you think you are, you want to die, asshole?”

Shane straightened up, pointing confidently at me. “She’s my wife, asshole!”

Hearing this, the disheveled man with the colorful hair was perplexed. He looked at me and asked, “Is that true?”

With a smile, I picked up my glass and took a sip. “No.”

The scruffy guy gained confidence. He pushed Shane’s hands away and shouted, “So she’s not your wife, huh? Get the hell out of here. Don’t say she’s your wife if she ain’t.”

Shane’s face turned red. I could tell he wanted to show the other man our marriage certificate right then and there.

He glared at me, grabbed my wrist and lifted me up.

“Eveline, as long as we don’t divorce, you are still my wife.”

Because of the force he exerted, my wrist hurt, but I did not submit to his will. I threw off her hand and scoffed, “Shane, are you crazy? Don’t get hysterical here.”

Shane was speechless. He stared at me, gritting his teeth as if he wanted to skin me alive.

Then, suddenly, he dragged me to an inconspicuous corner of the bar. The man with the colorful hair and everyone else must have deduced from our conversation that we were having a lovers’ quarrel, so they no longer interfered.

Soon, Shane dragged me into a private room private room, threw me on the couch and slammed the door shut. He then bent his neck to loosen his tie, while looking quite enraged.

“Eveline, I never thought you were this kind of person. You just can’t wait to replace a man, can you, even Derek doesn’t satisfy you?”

I had never seen him so irritable and vulgar. After all, he used to be so good at faking it.

I got up from the couch, feeling dizzy. Then, I gave him a particularly contemptuous look.

“I’m just like any other woman. Isn’t it normal that I can’t wait to replace another man? Besides, you know better than I do how we’ve been getting along these past two years – how is my life any different from that of a widow?”

I could never have said such words in the past, but due to drunkenness and my determination to annoy him, I uttered those words without thinking of the consequences of provoking him in a private room while we were alone.

“Do you doubt my capabilities? Prove it and you’ll know.”

His somber eyes rested on me, and I sensed that something sinister was about to happen

The next moment, he walked toward me and pressed me down on the couch.
