Chapter 294:

I didn’t want to upset Hunter, but he was a hospitable man. He told me that he had been living here all along, and that he would be very happy for us to accompany him.

Alvaro tried to give him a hundred dollars and asked him to cook some more dishes. However, Hunter refused the money and smiled at him. He said he had no fancy ingredients here and would just cook whatever he had at the time.

So, Alvaro bought several bottles of wine, some sunflower seeds, peanuts and other snacks from Hunter’s store. He also bought everyone present a pack of cigarettes.

After the others received a pack of cigarettes, they began to treat us better. The man who had earlier harshly criticized Alvaro even let out a few jokes.

“Hey, you’re a man, aren’t you? Every time you and your girlfriend have a fight, you have to appease her. From what I see, she’s not an unreasonable woman. Look how far you’ve run. It doesn’t look very good to be stuck here, does it?”. After criticizing Alvaro, she turned to me and said, “Don’t be angry anymore, my dear. I have seen how this young man treats you and he is very kind to you. I saw him go up the mountain in the middle of the hailstorm to look for you, ignoring his own safety, and I could see that he was really concerned about you. I was once a young man myself, so I understand how you feel.”

I said nothing. Meanwhile, Alvaro gave them a smile and poured them a drink of liquor.

While Hunter cooked several dishes, Alvaro, myself and a few strangers huddled together due to the hail and snow storm.

My first impression of Alvaro was that he was a cold-blooded man. But as I watched him interact with these strangers, I realized that he was a good conversationalist and quite talkative. Suddenly, the power went out. One of the men cursed, “Damn it! I knew the circuit would be destroyed sooner or later because of the hail.”

Hunter fetched a flashlight and turned it on so he could see the food. After the meal, he set up rooms so we could all rest.

I didn’t expect him to set up a single room for me and Alvaro.

At that point, I decided it would be best to make my relationship with Alvaro clear to the others.

I approached Hunter and said, “Mr. Diaz, you’ve got it all wrong. Actually, we don’t have a relationship. We…”

“Miss, I’m going to be honest, the boy seems like a good man. Please forgive him. There is no such thing as a perfect man. Even if he did something wrong, I should at least give him a chance to move on, shouldn’t I?”

Before I could finish the sentence, everyone interrupted me with all sorts of comments, and concluded that Aivaro and I were having a lovers’ quarrel. In the end, they urged us into the room.

In fact, I had already realized by the time we arrived that there were only two rooms. If Hunter had reserved this one for us, it meant he had to stay in a room with all the other men.

Alvaro turned on the flashlight on his phone and the beam of light illuminated the small room.

Inside, there was a wooden bed, a chair and a desk with an old television.

It was a snowy night in the mountains. There was no air conditioning, no stove, and even if we kept the doors and windows closed, the room still felt like an ice cellar. Even with a down jacket, I was freezing.

The hail had already stopped, but the wind was still strong and the snowfall was still heavy. I could clearly hear the wind whistling from inside the room.

The window pane was not broken, but it was not tightly closed. The curtains were being moved by the wind that crept into the room from time to time.

As I looked at the one bed, I stood on guard, ready for anything.

Alvaro placed his phone on the stand next to the TV, and propped it up in a position that provided the room with the best lighting.

Suddenly, he focused on me.

Although the light was dim, I could see the playful smile on his face that let me know he saw my unease and embarrassment.

Suddenly, he grabbed my hand. Before I could free myself from him, he pulled me into his arms, making me stumble forward. My forehead accidentally collided with his chin.

I wanted to step back and away from him, but he grabbed me around the waist with one hand, instantly shortening the distance between us. At the same time, he planted a kiss on my forehead.

Surprised by what he did, I looked up.

In the half-light, I saw Alvaro smile, licking his lips with the tip of his tongue. The joy on his face made him look like a sweet-toothed child who had tasted honey for the first time.
