Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 37
Chapter 37:.
“Why are we still sitting out here in the open, where the cold wind can torture us, instead of sleeping in our cozy tent? Don’t you think we’re being idiots?” Derek suddenly laughed at himself.
It was amazing how she could sit out here and chat with him quietly after what had happened earlier
“Why are you out here? You could have just slept on and pretended nothing happened,” I said sounding annoyed.
Derek gave me a look and took my hand after a while.
“Because I was afraid you were taking things too personally. When I woke up. I didn’t see you. And when I came out of the store, I couldn’t replace my bike anywhere. I thought about how bad you were at riding a bike, so I was scared to have to pick up your corpse at the foot of the mountain.” This time, his hoarse voice sounded very agitated and worried.
It was then that tears rolled down my cheeks.
I remembered how he rushed down the slope at high speed earlier. Maybe he didn’t even use the brake. He was probably too anxious at the time.
Then, he threw away his cigarette, took off his jacket and put it on me.
He hugged me, gently kissing my tear-soaked cheeks with his warm lips.
Every act he performed was so gentle.
“Eveline, I slept with you because I wanted to marry you, not the other way around.”
As touching as her words were, I was still stymied by what she said after we went to bed. When he mumbled ‘happy birthday,’ I knew at that moment that he already had someone in his heart.
But I couldn’t resist how kind and warm he was to me.
“Come on, I’m taking you to the hospital,” he said gruffly.
I declined his offer, but he still called Timmy to pick us up.
Once Timmy had driven the car here, Derek stowed the two bikes in the trunk and then took me to the back seat. There he sat with me and held me in his arms the whole ride, making me feel like I was being well taken care of.
Soon we arrived at the hospital. Once my wounds were healed, he personally drove me home and took me up to the room.
After placing me on the bed, he placed his hands on either side of my body, staring at me with unblinking eyes.
“What’s wrong?” his intense stare scared me somehow.
“Let’s go to the town hall after you’ve woken up.” From the way he spoke it didn’t sound like he was joking.
I looked at him, pursing my lips silently:
“Well? Say something, will you?” Derek shook my arm.
I remained silent, however, feeling conflicted by this turn of events. I wasn’t going to lose anything by marrying him, but I knew I loved someone else.
I was well aware that I should not expect to win his heart, but I was but a woman. We women can sometimes be too greedy in love.
Hearing what he said, I suddenly fell silent.
My reaction seemed to amuse him.
“Why did you choose me? You must have a lot of choices,” I asked him.
Then I plucked up my courage and looked him in the eye, because I wanted to hear the whole truth. His playful expression disappeared and he looked me straight in the eyes earnestly. “Do you want to hear the truth?”, I replied with a shake of my head.
“Because you’re simple,” he said.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
As Derek sat on the edge of the bed, he raised his head slightly.
“Unlike other women who are too complicated, you are simple. Being with you is comfortable and easy. That’s why I want to marry you. It has nothing to do with anything else,” he said in a calm voice, letting himself be seen.
However, his words only served to disappoint me.
Few people could analyze a relationship with such clarity.
Someone who was too rational in a relationship would make a terrible partner.
I had no idea that, the day after crawling out of the grave of my shitty marriage with so many scars, I would remarry on an impulse.
I finally accepted his marriage proposal not because he had slept with me, but because of his grandfather’s desire, his honest view of love, and my growing feelings for him. This time, I thought I could slowly fall in love with him.
