Back to Love: A New Beginning -
Chapter 38
Chapter 38:.
I wasn’t expecting to see my horrible ex-husband, Shane, who I had just divorced yesterday, at city hall. what a coincidence! The moment Derek’s car pulled up to the entrance of city hall, my eyes were drawn to someone before I got out of the car.
There was a woman getting out of the car in front of us. It was Vivien. She was wearing a short sleeveless dress and strutted around as her snow white breasts almost spilled out of her dress.
She seemed to be in good spirits as she clung to Shane’s arm during the ride. He seemed to have succeeded in appeasing her. “Eveline, I’m the one by your side now. Keep your head up and straighten your chest,” Derek commented in a calm voice.
I glanced back at him and met his silent gaze.
He must have showered this morning, as his hair was still a bit damp. He was wearing a formal suit today. His white shirt was unwrinkled and the cuffs were slightly turned up. From the looks of it, his wristwatch was certainly valuable. No matter what angle he looked at it from, he looked devilishly handsome.
He must have also noticed Shane and Vivien, considering he hinted that he still looked hurt every time he saw them together.
Derek was right. Someone as excellent as him was about to be my husband.
The others would certainly be jealous, and I should be proud!
Now that I had run into those two idiots, I just had to face them.
Once we got out of the car, we bumped into each other at the entrance to the town hall.
Since I had seen them before, I was much calmer, while they were not doing well. I could tell they were surprised to see me here.
“Eveline, what are you doing here?”
As Vivien spoke, she pressed her bald head into Shane’s arm, apparently fearful that he would take her damn man away from her.
A faint smile graced my lips as I held the arm of the better man at my side.
“I’m here to do what you two are going to do.”

Shane looked at me and Derek, as if refusing to believe that Derek would actually marry me.
Meanwhile, the look of envy and reluctance on Vivien’s face turned to disdain.
“I didn’t expect anyone out there to want a pair of old, worn-out shoes.”
I was already used to Vivien’s verbal abuse, so it didn’t bother me in the least. Because she compared me to a pair of worn-out shoes, Derek was also insulted. I was concerned that such insults would come up from time to time.
I looked at Derek with apologetic eyes and checked how sullen he looked. He seemed on the verge of losing his temper.
Personally. I’d rather he didn’t lose his temper with these bastards. Instinctively. I tightened my arm and looked at Vivien. “You know, I may be a worn out pair of shoes, and you may be new, but you’re going to be worn by the same smelly feet that wore me out.”
Vivien was so angry at my comment that she could barely breathe.
However, she couldn’t think of a rebuttal.
This time, when Derek returned my gaze, it softened.
“Come on. Don’t waste your time on someone petty,” he commented.
Indeed, those people had nothing to do with me anymore. They were indeed insignificant.
So, I averted my eyes from those bastards and walked into City Hall, arm in arm with Derek. Soon, Vivien and Shane followed us in.
Today seemed to be a good day. There were lots of people coming in to register for marriages, and there were others waiting in line with varied objectives.
As soon as we set foot in the lobby, a young man in a business suit approached Derek, showing his respect.
“Hello, Mr. Sullivan! This way, please. We realize how valuable your time is, so we’ve arranged for someone to handle the marriage registration paperwork for you,” the young man said.
Under envious stares from the crowd, Derek and I walked through the queue.
I felt so proud. And at the same time, this man next to me became even more mysterious to me.
Once we were seated, I glanced at him from time to time. Despite the special treatment he was receiving, he seemed rather indifferent.
Once the staff had gone through the formalities for us, I saw how frustrated Vivien was through the glass window. She must have been angry that we were getting special treatment and they were not. At this point, she was at odds with Shane. He was trying to calm her down, but it didn’t seem to be working.
Seeing Shane so whipped by this woman made me feel sorry for him.
Once he had lost his puny self-esteem in front of Vivien, would he still think the choice he had made today was the right one?
